So, Brandon Turnage isn’t coming to Athens after all. He’s going to take his talent to Knoxville. No doubt the playing time opportunity is better there, so I can’t blame him for wanting that.
But then he had to spoil it all by saying something stupid like,
At Tennessee, the newcomer will have an opportunity to compete in what is a thin cornerback room for veteran coach Willie Martinez.
“He’s a real coach,” Turnage said about Martinez. “He’s been in the SEC for a long time and knows what he is doing. He has relationships with my old coaches, so that’s good. I know that I can trust him.”
Um… who wants to tell him?

There’s a lot to that.
Seems the kid wants to go somewhere and be handed a starting job.
I guess Willie promised him one.

He doesn’t want to be in Athens? I already forgot about him. Have a healthy season and prepare for an ass whuppin’ when UGA rolls into Knoxville!

I got a much needed chuckle from the soft Willie comment. But the real kicker is the Nancy and Frank Jr reference. Where the hell else are you gonna find that on a football blog?

Glad he is escaping Alabama since it doesn’t have real coaches.

Who else thinks we just didn’t have room?
Plenty of room in Knoxville tho.

Come November 13th there will plenty of room between Turnage and the Georgia receivers.
Light ’em the fuck up.

Thinks he just evaluated the talent a little further and realized he wasn’t increasing his chances for playing time any more than at Bama.

IIRC, Willie wasn’t that bad a position coach. Peter Principle as a coordinator and leader/organizer, but not too bad at teaching defensive backs.

Agreed. He developed a lot of DBs except Bryan Evans.

Willie was a past master of what the Pro’s call Face Guarding. He was a good position coach but not an DC

No hate for Willie Martinez – he was a very good secondary coach for us. The DC position did not work out as we all would have liked. So…move on.
Nothing wrong with this player looking to see which program needs more help which gives him the opportunity to play more.
And let’s face it ….there is A LOT of opportunity at Tennessee (if you know what I mean).

Willie will certainly teach you how to “watch the receiver’s eyes” – as they make that perfect catch in stride headed to the end zone while you burst into flames. Welcome to the Vol Burn Ward.

He’s from Mississippi, so he must have had an offer from Ole Miss and passed. On Oct. 16 Matt Corral visits Knoxville.
He walked away from ‘Bama. Now he gets to go back and visit them on Oct. 23.
He walked away from Georgia. JT and the Dawgs will be in Knoxville on Nov.13.
I don’t think he was smacking Bama or Georgia when he made the glowing remarks about WM. I suspect the was told exactly what he wanted to hear and his joy just bubbled over with praise for the man. He is obviously convinced he will be starting.
Or maybe he already has some NIL offers in Knoxville.

In all honesty, Martinez was an awful DC…..a decent to good DB coach.
With that said, it probably turned out best for all parties (Turnage/UGA)…..

Maybe he prefers giving receivers a 15 yard cushion. 🤷🏼♂️

Well, at least he won’t have to worry about possibly catching Covid from opposing wide receivers. The social distance coaching will be top notch.
