Not too shabby

CFN ranks Georgia’s receiving corps fourth best in the country.

It’s not an exaggeration to suggest that Georgia might have one of the most promising tight end rooms in the history of college football. Brock Bowers led the team with 56 catches, Arik Gilbert is one of the most talented players in the country who just needs to put it all together, and Darnell Washington is a big pass catcher who can hit. All three are terrific NFL prospects – now the receiving corp has to catch up. Ladd McConkey and Adonai Mitchell are experienced, but losing Jermaine Burton – the team’s best receiver – to Alabama hurts.

Graham suggests Georgia’s inside receivers may not have that much catching up to do.

One of the more underrated talking points around Georgia this offseason is how well Todd Monken ran his offense despite a rash of injuries to key pass catchers last year. Those guys are healthy again, and youngsters who were forced to step into starring roles in 2021 return as well.

The result is a deep and talented group of slot guys who have all shown the ability to be extremely productive in the past. Expect the Bulldogs to use Jackson, Blaylock and McConkey early and often while featuring them in the screen game to even out touches and provide plenty of chances to produce explosive plays.

One thing in particular I think he’s got right is how most are sleeping on Kearis for this season.  He was hurt for much of last year and it showed at times.  But he looked like he was back to his old self at G-Day (“He looked healthy on G-Day and that translated to a lot of crisp routes, good catches away from the body, and consistent yards after the catch.”).  I’m not saying he’s going to make us forget about Burton, but I do think he’s going to have a fine season if he remains healthy.

Man I forgot about Jackson. Wasn’t he injured the last two years??

I’m hoping Blaylock is the guy who returns and had a big year. He was so important for us his freshman season, and then to go out like he did, in the SEC Title Game with a busted knee that’s kept him out the last two years (thanks to follow-on injuries) has to have been rough on him.

  3. There is a ton of talent in both pass catching rooms. As much as everyone wants to see a lot of 13 and 14 personnel (as do I), I want to see if we’ll do some 3-tight empty sets.

    • 4 verticals with Mitchell, McConkey, Bowers and Gilbert with 0 as a safety valve.

Regardless of how Georgia’s WR room stacks up nationally, I am comfortable saying that Georgia has the best overall group of pass catchers in the nation and it probably isn’t close. There isn’t a defensive coordinator that can successfully play chess with Monken with this group of pass catchers. Imagine a second and three after a nice 7 yard run inside the opponent’s 30 yard line…and all of the sudden Bowers, Gilbert, Washington, and Mitchell trot on the field with Milton in the backfield. Probably isn’t a trackable stat, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Georgia’s offense causes opposing defenses to call more timeouts due to matchup issues than anyone in the nation this season.

      • 13 personnel with either of the M&M boys is lethal. You put a healthy Arian Smith in instead of Mitchell (who is awesome) to take the top off the defense … that’s downright scary for a DC.

There’s also the pretty big x factor of Arian Smith. If he could stay healthy, which is a big if, he’s scary for any defense.

    “Burton -the team’s best receiver…”

Burton? Our best receiver? That’s b.s.

Freshmen Bowers, Mitchell, McConkey, and senior Cook had more catches. I’d argue the biggest reason Burton got playing time was due to injuries of Perkins, Jackson, Blaylock and Rosemy. DRob transferred out.

Burton’s not a bad receiver, but certainly not our best.

And I’m not sure who’s more desperate. Burton for transferring or bama for accepting him. Both parties have overly high opinions of the guy’s true ability and value.

Don’t know if he would have been our best this year, but no need to Dawg-grade Burton. He is a very good to great receiver with tons of natural ability. DBs respected him so he got a lot of attention and PIs. And he did well for us in the NC game. In fact, I still wonder if Burton would have transferred had he scored the go ahead TD in the 4th quarter – he had his guy completely beat with no safety help, and Bama DB tackled him from behind with the ball in the air. Could see his frustration even thought the PI call helped UGA, and then AD goes on to catch the TD…

We just need to accept the fact that UGA plays complimentary football and individuals putting up video game stats will not be a regular occurrence.

Not Dawg-grading Burton. He might be #1 or #2 at bama. But in Athens he’d be in a season-long fight to stay in the top 6.

He’s was pretty good, but Mitchell has a better knack for getting open and McConkey is one of the most underrated athletes on this team. I read Bennett talking about how fast he was in an article. Kearis Jackson being healthy is just icing on the cake. Everyone assumes Burton left for more yards…and that’s probably true, but I personally believe it’s because of the stiff competition he had at UGA keeping him from those yards than from BY throwing to him more. JMHO

I can understand Burton leaving if he wants to pad his stats for draft day. Assuming he stays healthy, Bama has shown that they will lock onto 1-2 receivers only and if he’s one of two, he’ll get 1000 yards receiving. That’s certainly one way to stand out for the draft, but not the only way.

Just to add a little on Burton: I do wish he had stayed, but don’t wish him ill for leaving. However, it seems to me that he had injuries also when he was here, and they were not so serious as to require surgery, but nagging little things that kept cropping up. I am not sure he can stay healthy long enough to be a locked on receiver in Bama’s offense.

Left out Rosemy-Jacksaint. He wasn’t 100% last year after the 20’ injury vs Florida. He may be the sleeper this year. Could be Pickens-ish in his play. Jackson Meeks showed some flashes last year and now he has a full season & spring.

Yep. And Arian Smith has a lot of up-side also.

Burton had the same problem as DRob the season before. Younger, productive talent supplanting his potential playing time – even during a season when our WR corps had a LOT of injuries and/or players recovering from injuries.

I think our receiving corps is much better than most of the national pundits give them credit for. That said, with all the attention that the TE group will draw, they could (as a group) have a record breaking (for UGA) year. The way we spread the ball around, I don’t see any of them individually having video game numbers, but the group as a whole could put up come eye popping numbers.

  8. Like the swans flocking to San Cappuccino, the Fall practice discussion will focus on whether or OL can protect Bennett enough to take advantage of our receiving riches.
