It’s never that these kids (especially offensive talent) get a better offer late in the process and decide they don’t want to play in his high school offense. I think the kid from Augusta we flipped has a chance to be a solid fullback, inside linebacker or special teams player. Long live the Genius of Techwood!

Speaking of roads, true story; I played on a club tennis team down in Virginia Beach. If you’ve ever been, you’ll know the roads are AWFUL in that part of the country. Anyway, one of the guys on my team told me he worked at the Virginia DOT, overseeing engineering projects.

As with the proverbial broken clock wisdom, CPJ is finally right on something: the early signing period should be adopted ASAP. This is so logical it should have been done years ago. I don’t know what percentage should be the cutoff (I think 60-75%) but putting some of this hay in the barn before the bowls would not only be beneficial financially, it would allow fine tuning of class needs to insure the best fit for the recruit and the program. Richt was on board with this long before Coach Dick even knew what D1 recruiting was about.

Ugh. Again with this “Tech is hard/Georgia isn’t” foolishness.
Forgive the slight bragging, but:
Years ago, you could easily carve out a niche at Georgia as an entirely mediocre student. You know, the 7-year plan. During my time there (2001-2005), that was becoming increasingly difficult, and nowadays with enrollment crunches and such, it’s pretty much impossible. Additionally, you can get an aggressively top-notch education in Athens if you pursue it; a former girlfriend of mine was one of the Rhodes Scholars from 2008. I doubled in magazine journalism and history (8th-century Chinese history focus). This isn’t basket-weaving.
Could I, a big dumb thUGA student, rock the calculus on the Flats? Probably not; I suck at math. But a lot of these Tech message board jockeys probably couldn’t handle my course load at Georgia, either. It’s a different-focused education, no better, no worse. (Though, in terms of national prestige, obviously you have to give the nod to Georgia.)
Also? Hardly any of these players are there for rocket science. Don’t kid yourself, Tech. I’ll maintain my comeback of “Reggie Ball” until you find away to get around that little problem.

Sir, if we worried about that on a football blog there would be no blog. People come on here tentatively sometimes because they don’t want to be criticized as being imperfect just by expressing their opinion. If everyone on this blog didn’t excuse and overlook errors of typing and ignorance every day, none of us would be here.

The cognitive dissonance it takes to be a Tech fan is one that is profound. Just because you decided to beat yourself over the head by going to a school that makes no bones about the fact that 2 out of 3 will either drop out/end up on the M-train when you take Calc 1 doesn’t mean that my education wasn’t difficult and I’m an uneducated idiot that skated by on basket-weaving courses.
You’ll occasionally see a few on the Tech message boards call themselves out when using that argument pointing out that UGA pumps out lawyers and business professionals that are very successful in life – but by and large they still abide by this myth that Tech is inherently hard and there’s no way UGA isn’t easy. They have this belief that engineering majors are somehow more important in the grand scheme of society than anything else. I fart in their general direction. Your comment about different-focused education is they key there.
I’d like to see a few of those Techies carry my courseload when I was simultaneously going through the undergrad/graduate Accounting programs of what is consistently rated as a top 10-15 Accounting program in the country. I imagine they might struggle with that just like I probably wasn’t too good at the advanced mathematics.

what the nerds generally fail to realize or acknowledge: math isnt the only college subject that is difficult, and there are a lot of other areas in which one can be really, really smart besides math and/or science.
If Joe Hamilton, Kerry Watkins, or Tyrone Sorrells (transferred from developmental studies at UGA and graduated, I believe from GTU) can graduate from GTU, it cant be THAT impossible, though I am sure all three of the above had to put forth effort. Just like everyone else who graduates from UGA or GTU. How many of the Cremins era bball stars at Tech had to take the SAT mulitiple times to break 700 on the SAT? James Forrest, Dennis Scott, Kenny Anderson (all as reported by the AJC for sure). And yet, those guys are scholars, but our guys are thugs?
Tech people are frequently pious hypocrites. Most of the ones on Stingtalk or the Hive PBM can barely compose a simple declarative sentence, but they’re all geniuses.

My youngest is a finance major and is in Terry. His senior year he scored the highest SAT score at his HS and is in the honors program at Georgia. Exempted Calc. He said his accounting class was a beast and he won’t be taking another one. I always wondered when he would run into that class that humbled him some. My hats off to you sir.

Oh my….. I really haven’t thought of his pursuit as simple. He has always been pretty focused as a young man. I didn’t spend much time on that side of campus. We will see where he winds up. Thanks for the post.

I did my Accounting coursework from 2005-2007 and he most certainly was still there. Last I heard, he’d retired after another cancer scare. Definitely one tough cookie.

CPJ doesn’t seem to have an ethical problem signing kids who had previously committed somewhere else. If he truly believes what he says, and its not just sour grapes, then CPJ should refuse to accept these morally defective kids who want to flip to GT from another program.

Before we all get caught up in some Atl kid’s ego trip, you must consider the breadth of each school’s education program. Most of you know the science professions(Pharm,Vet, various other Biologist degrees) as well as Law, Journalism and other degrees available at UGA. They don’t even come close at Tech. Now UGA has a fledgling Engineering School.
My nephew got his degree at Tech- in Accounting. He couldn’t do university-level Calculus if his life depended upon it. When I was at UGA we were at the forefront of the Biological Sciences in the U.S., along with Cornell and Stanford. Tech was considered as a desert in that area. They were even behind us in Electron Microscopy, a field you would think would proliferate in an Engineering school. Biotechnology was at the forefront then and Tech was always lacking. They still do.
Everyone should get over those idiots whose coaches can’t even teach their QBs how to count past three. Their recruiting slogan should be “You won’t believe our big Johnson.” .
