Put me on the list of those hoping it happens. Feel like Pruitt was just getting the defense where he would like it to be, and he is a proven recruiter. So what if he rubs a few people the wrong way. I don’t like everyone I employ but if they do their jobs well I reward them often. The bottom line should be production. Some continuity would be very nice on the defensive side of the ball. Now the offense……

To be honest, I hope it doesnt. Too big of a risk of rampant palace intrigue if Pruitt stays. Remember, Smart is a pretty damn good DC himself—it’s not like Pruitt is some hotshot OC or something.
I know it goes against conventional wisdom among those with a cursory at best understanding of some of the behind the scenes stuff, but Pruitt being retained, IMO, will be a bad sign overall. Will we lose some recruits? Sure. But I’m more worried about the long term direction of the program, not perhaps losing 4-5 recruits that are attached to CJP.

I would predict Pruitt is gone in 1-2 years regardless, so its in everyones best interest for him to stay one more year. For Pruitt it shows his next potential boss he can stay in one place, and it gives the UGA program and Smart a year to figure out who the long term DC needs to be. I would hope everyone’s feelings can remain unhurt for one year knowing he is out the door next December.

A lot of UGA’s problems under Richt were allowed to go on without being addressed because Richt surrounded himself with people who either thought like him or would not confront him. Pruitt is not that way and Richt’s “yes” men became disgruntled when the status quo was disrupted. Hopefully, Smart will not make the same mistake.
That said, I would like for Puitt to stay and Richt’s “yes” men to go. I believe if we are to truly change direction, the weed (Richt) must be pulled up roots and all.

Probably I am in the minority here, but yes I would like to move on from all of Richt’s staff. I realize they are great recruiters, but there are others out there. I just have doubt that they will completely buy in to the new “process”… especially if they had heartburn about Pruitt challenging the offense to get their act together.

Everything I keep hearing about Pruitt is he is a foul mouthed redneck that mistreats the staff and everybody (except his players) hates him. That may be administrative types whining, but I will be surprised if he stays

You know as much as some of these modern men may not like foul mouthed rednecks and find them i timid sting, they make pretty solid football football coaches. Some people thought that was what Erk was. He may not have been able to provide any suggestions for a great coffee shop in the area or tell you where any great “foodie” resteraunts were but he could make his guys kick ass on Saturdays. Pruitt is in that same mold. I hope he stays.

For what it’s worth, Mark Richt wasn’t so up to speed on the best coffee shops and “foodie” restaurants in Athens, but his guys very often did not kick ass on Saturdays.
Being insular and ignorant doesn’t make you good at your job.
I like Pruitt as a DC because he’s good at his job, not because I’ve created an heroic image for him as a crass redneck.
Harbaugh, Saban, Patterson, and Meyer are anything but ignorant rednecks. They’re not intimidating because they’re “foul mouthed rednecks”. They’re intimidating because they are excellent at their jobs and their teams perform.

That’s fine. The reflexive use of the word “redneck” for any guy that doesn’t fit the modern definition of what’s acceptable is just funny to me and telling. Would Pruitt be more palatable if he drove a Priuss and listened to Wilco? Being a beta male who tries to pass himself off as an intellectual every chance he gets doesn’t make a man anything other than just that. I hope Pruitt is your definition of a redneck. I would imagine that makes him a lot easier for the players to respect than the other.

I actually don’t have a definition of redneck. It seems you’re a lot more interested in defining “redneck” and “modern male” than I am. But I’m not here to stop you.
I just want competent football coaches.

The Pruitt deal is an interesting thing. If you believe just half of the ah…stuff? you read on the Web, Pruitt has some personality attributes that cause problems among the staff…and in the head office at Butts-Mehre, although there are only rumor and innuendo to confirm either of those.
But, even if a third or so of the rumor and innuendo has any basis in fact, it will take a strong personality (an Alpha Dawg 🙂 ) to do some behavior modification team building.
If the stories about Boom being on Kirby’s list as DC are true, then strong personalities don’t seem to bother Smart.
I suspect working with somebody on Nick Saban’s staff is almost certainly very different from working with somebody when you are the boss and the somebody is working for you.
And so we wait…How long, oh Lord, how long?

Let’s just say that I’m sticking to my 2% prediction (that he returns) I first made 3 weeks or so ago.
If he does stay, well: The Georgia Way has been utterly obliterated, ADGM will soon be out of a job, Pruitt has dialed back his abrasive ego (which allows him to work with Smart in the first place), and Smart himself also felt that all of Pruitt’s future headaches will be worth it in the end.
In other words, lots of dominoes have to fall into place. I just don’t see it.

What you said and what Mr. Tu said fits with what a couple if guys who know him through being in the college football coaching profession say. They both told me he was an outstanding coach but “just an old country boy” who “believes his own press clippings” and has not learned how to get along in an organization. That fits with Mr. Tu’s comment. One guy had spoken with him before the Tech game and Pruitt was looking to leave for somewhere else, then. My source did not say why Pruitt was looking to leave, but since he took the job to coach for Richt and since there are persistent rumors about issues with the B-M crowd I infer that that he chafed working under the AD’s terms. Thus, I conclude with you (though I am not able to assign a percentage to the chances) that the only way he will be back is if Smart and Sexton forced changes in administrative policy that Pruitt felt the coaches needed.

Way back in the memory banks I seem to have stored the impression that Kirby did not meld well with the then Georgia staff when he was there in 2005 and that one of the issues was Kirby’s language, so I doubt Pruitt’s choice of adjectives and adverbs are particularly important, but that ego thing…that’s virtually impossible to correct. Have not been a fan of Pruitt but I am slowly coming around after he has shown the results on the field and this year they speak rather loudly that he along with most of his staff (Rocker) should be retained. Personal issues be damned he deserves the chance to stay if it boils down to it and and IF he wants to stay, and he has said that he does want to stay, that was his last statement prior to to richt being fired and he has said nothing to my knowledge to the contrary.

Do the positives outweigh the negatives? IMO yes. The negatives are hearsay, and the positives are improved defense, staff additions, higher recruiting budget, and the indoor practice facility. He wants to win. Hope he stays.

Pruitt is a rainmaker. Somebody, anybody, show me a better defensive recruiter not named Saban or Smart.
And if we’ve only learned one thing at UGA, it’s that changing an OC or DC is a risky move. If you get a good OC or DC you’d damn well better find ways to keep him.
