Kirby Smart and the death of instant gratification

I guess I should have expected it, but it’s still been something to read all of the angst on Dawg message boards and in some of the comments here as a consequence of Smart’s decision to coach Alabama’s defense in the CFP.  Saban’s made Georgia his bitch, Kirby’s a chump, recruiting is a mess, where are the new assistant coaches… you name a topic, there’s venting about it.

Why so worked up, peeps?

Yes, there have been a moderate number of defections on the recruiting front.  But Eason has reaffirmed his commitment and there are kids, like Ben Davis, who’ve stepped up to claim a new, strong interest in Georgia that more than offset the number of decommitments.  It’s the dead period, so whatever contact there is between the coaching staff and recruits during this time is largely going to occur under the radar, anyway.

As for the coaching staff, again, given how closemouthed Smart’s been to date, why should anyone expect to know who he’s spoken with about the open assistant positions, or even how he envisions the makeup of his staff until we’re presented with the hires?  And what exactly does Georgia gain by naming someone to, say, the spot vacated by Thomas Brown today rather than a week or two from now?  Certainly nothing on the Xs and Os side and, again, as far as recruiting goes, it doesn’t seem like the Dawgs under Smart are running into huge problems right now with six coaches running things during the month of December.

It’s the internet age and we all have short attention spans.  I know.  But we’d best get used to receiving news about the program at the pace Smart prefers rather than what we’d like.  ‘Cause that’s part of the Process.

    Because why???

Why is Kirby still working for Bama?

For a chance at a NC? He’s got a pocket full of em and plenty time for more.

    For a $100,000 bonus? Please.

    Loyal to his players? Please.

    Why???

    • Because he hates Georgia, obviously. Just like Richt did when he was hired.

Unless you know the guy, your speculation is both pointless and silly.

He wants to finish the job he was paid millions to do. This is honorable and more coaches should follow his example.

He also doesn’t want to burn any bridges because he will need them in four years when he doesn’t average 10 wins per season.

I’m cynical, so your second paragraph rings WAY more true than your first one, but there’s still an honor of sorts in not burning bridges.

So hard the lulz…you think that leaving a school to take another job would burn bridges? Have to seen the things that these coaches do and how incestuous the business is. I am not sure you can burn a bridge in the coaching world.

While one should never be shocked at the stupidity of message board posters, the handwringing over the issues you mention by many is surprising. Let the man coach. Let him build his staff. I think everyone needs to remind themselves if the following axiom, “if you are worried about who the assistant coaches are, you have the wrong head coach.”

For the first 5 seasons under Richt, I never thought about whether the coaching staff was good enough because Richt gave us little reason for doubt.

Additionally, assistant coaches come and go, but it is the head coach that creates the culture and leadership across all aspects of the program. Thus, the whole exercise of playing “fantasy football with assistant coaches resumes” is a fool’s errand. Let the man build his staff as he sees fit.

This is interesting. my perception is that the staff has become much more of a source for news, drama, and prominence in the last decade. Coordinators were hardly ever mentioned in the media unless they were in the hunt for a head position. You’d never see the tv camera on them either. Heck, this season, the S and C guy is “the one that makes or breaks the team”, “the most important person with unlimited player contact”.

I wonder when the medical facilities and staff wars will start? “We have an MRI system in the locker room and we will check you out after every game!”

I’d feel a shit-ton better about the whole enterprise if the facilities wars went in that direction than I would seeing that money spent on a putt-putt course or a laser tag space.

  6. Senator, I’ll admit that I don’t like the pace at which the staff is being named. He said he was going to take his time and certainly has done that. I would have liked for Smart to be in Athens already, but I understand his desire to be with his team. I don’t think we’re going to get much publicity from it because Saban isn’t going to let Smart be in front of the camera and microphones. I like Sherrer and Rocker staying on. I hate that McLendon or Brown isn’t gong to be on the staff. I’m concerned about the decommitted recruits because we need good players now. The sky isn’t falling, but there’s a part of me that will be hoping Michigan State wins on New Year’s Eve (as long as it’s Junior’s fault).

Like your AD post (it could be worse), look at Southern Cal – three weeks ago USC promoted Clay Helton to Head Coach. Two weeks ago Helton cleaned house with the coaching staff.

The only position that has been filled (as of this writing) is Tee Martin (former UTk QB) is their Offensive Coordinator.

There is a group of fans that are always going to gripe. They griped that Dooley didn’t pass the ball enough when we had Herschel. They griped every time Shockley was put in a game so he could get a little experience before his Senior season….when he of course won the SEC. They griped that we needed to fire Richt and hire Muschamp. For years they griped that we needed to get rid of Bobo including his last three when UGA had the best offense in the history of the school and one of the best in the country. Of course they almost immediately griped about his replacement. They griped throughout Aaron Murray’s career that we needed to bench him and play Hudson Mason. Now they are griping about Kirby. Unfortunately that group is always going to gripe. Just wait until Kirby loses a game….

Rationalize it however but make no mistake…we ARE Bama’s bitch. Our head coach helping Bama win another NC is not getting Georgia any closer to another of our own, or to closing the recruiting gap.

No, the sky isn’t falling but I’m not fooling myself into believing some of the things I’ve read, either.

  17. With regards to Kirby, I think he is showing some confidence (I hope) that he can hold on the current committed 2016 recruiting class even with his seeming absence.

    Like

  18. I think the “Internet age” thing is a big contributor to this, mostly because the flow and sharing of information is both faster and deeper than it was even five years ago.

For example, people are tracking the UGA plane and connecting the dots with regard to assistant coach interviews and hirings, and those people’s speculation has in many cases proven to be on the mark. (I was monitoring a couple of message board threads that correctly named Chaney and Pittman as targets based largely on flight tracking days before those hires were announced). That really didn’t happen, at least not to this extent, after Donnan was fired.

Augmenting that, people are also disseminating information on Kirby’s known — in some cases, publicly announced — “first choices,” which included the likes of Thomas Brown, Dan Enos, and Scott Cochran. When we get to watch the headhunting/hiring/rejection process unfold in something close to real time, it invites conversation.

Combine that with the storied history of the Georgia Way, and I think it’s understandable that a number of folks are concerned that Georgia is being outbid or otherwise can’t compete with our local competition when it comes to hiring the assistants the new head coach wants.

Pittman appears to be a home-run kind of hire, but beyond that, the new hires up to this point are unexciting. We’re talking about a glorified graduate assistant and an OC, whose name was largely unknown locally, whose numbers over the years don’t exactly jump off the page. Retaining Rocker seems like a good move, based on his track record, and Sherrer worked with Kirby for a while, so there’s that. Contrast that with the established recruiting prowess of McClendon, Brown, and Pruitt, and I think some measure of concern is justified.

And when the portion of the fanbase who vocally clamored for a rookie head coach did so with the expectation that he’d somehow bring an all-star cast of Saban’s other assistants with him, it stands to reason that that same contingent would be at least equally vocal if/when Kirby didn’t do so. And if he ends up rounding out the staff with a handful of other Alabama QC personnel and similarly un-splashy names, prepare for at least several months of continued proclamations of gloom and doom.

Personally, I look forward to seeing another list of SEC football budgets for 2016, once all the hires are made (including support staff and S&C coaches). If Georgia’s budget is unchanged between now and then, it doesn’t bode well for Kirby’s ability to emulate “The Process” in Athens, which seems to have been many people’s expectation when he was hired.

    Like

    • I should have included this: I personally don’t think it means much that Kirby is in Tuscaloosa right now. At worst, maybe it affected his ability to respond quickly to other teams’ offers to the likes of Brown and McClendon (if he had any intention of trying to retain McClendon, which he may not have). As for recruiting, we’re going to lose whatever players were closely bound to the assistant coaches who we’ve lost, whether Kirby’s in Athens or Tuscaloosa.

But what Kirby’s doing with Alabama right now is something a lot of other first-time HCs have done over the years, especially when their current teams were heading toward national championship games. It’s standard practice.

Great post. But none of this is unique to UGA.

I’ll go ahead and admit that right now I’m following Miami closer than I’m following UGA. And if that makes me a bad fan so be it. But it is so interesting to watch the Miami fans hanging on news of every assistant coach hire. They are getting all their news from a leaky Butts Mehre.

The truth is that that this is entire industry is subject to extraordinary turnover every year at this time (And we haven’t even had NFL’s black Monday yet) . And now that salaries are skyrocketing, some of these assistant coaches have several good options. Some want to stay put for more money, some don’t know if they have a job. It is all in motion for the next month.

  20. I definitely don’t get the “Bama’s bitch”
or “Saban’s bitch” comments just because Kirby is staying on. I don’t think there’s an assistant coach out there who wouldn’t stay through the playoffs in this situation. If it was just a bowl game (and yes, it sucks that nowadays bowls have been largely reduced to “just” a bowl game), I’d be pissed if Kirby didn’t go ahead and come on to Athens. But when a national title is on the line, the right thing is to stay and finish it out. If we were hiring someone from Michigan State and they were staying on through the playoffs, you wouldn’t hear people saying Dantonio was making us his bitch. People are only saying it because of the school/coach involved.

  21. Chill, Dawgs. These 30 days won’t make or break Smart at UGA.

Don’t know if y’all will land Davis or not, but you will enjoy this type of linebacker.

Kind of chuckled at y’all gushing over Ganus this year. He’s a tough player and good kid – a model player for any program, really, but…

I watched this kid play safety and QB in high school at probably 180 or 190 pounds. Good athlete, but there’s a difference in adding 40 pounds of bulk and coming out of the gates at 230. (Similar I would say to a 300 lb freshman vs a 300 pound junior…there’s just a difference. One is a full-growed man and the other one isn’t.)

You will like these big linebackers.

    • BD, these 30 days won’t make or break him, but the elevated expectations that started the Sunday after Thanksgiving will. If I were him, I would be doing everything in my power to get off to a fast start. People on the east side of the Chattahoochee have generally been a pretty patient bunch, but Kirby is probably going to find that patience is gone now.

      Like

      • Yeah, and I think that he’s in a rather precarious position as a rookie HC because of that.

Georgia fired a proven commodity to hire Kirby. Regardless of the quality of the wins and losses, Richt could be counted on to deliver 9 to 10 wins per season, which significantly exceeded Georgia’s all-time historical average of roughly 7 wins per season.

With that in mind, if Kirby doesn’t routinely win 10+ games, starting almost right out of the gate (maybe he’ll get something of a pass for 2016), he’ll be on the hot seat very, very quickly.

The bar has been set very high for Kirby: it’s basically “SEC championships or bust,” starting no later than year two of his head-coaching career. That’s a lot of pressure.

        Like

        • I think 8+ wins in 2016 is a reasonable expectation, but my expectations grow rapidly after that. He needs multiple appearances in Atlanta over the next 5 years to be successful.

I’m afraid the big money people have made it abundantly clear that there better be an SEC championship at a minimum during his first contract.

          Like

          • I have to imagine that’s the case (that the people pulling the strings have issued the mandate you describe).

In fact, I have a feeling that if Kirby doesn’t win the SEC by year four, he’ll be fired without finishing out the contract, and McGarity will accompany him out the door.

This just isn’t true. UGA fans are actually a pretty patient lot. Richt didn’t get fired because he was losing. He got fired because he was getting embarrassed and was out of excuses. He ran through everyone it could be blamed on untile there was no one left.

If Kirby averages 9-3 while managing to avoid 28 point drubbings at home and complete no shows in Jax., then I’d venture to say he’ll be around a while.

Smart is now showing some final respect and loyalty to the guy who helped him so much. What the hell is wrong with that? It is what I would have done and is the kind of guy I want as my head coach.

There’s zero evidence that Kirby is being compelled or coerced into coaching Bama through the postseason. The “Saban’s bitch” meme is just that — a meme, supported entirely by people’s (mostly subjective and pathetic) impressions of Saban’s reputation.

As far as anyone can tell, Kirby made this decision primarily to fulfill a commitment — to “finish the drill,” if you will — which shows character. And herein lies the irony of people bitching about it. They praised Richt for being a man of integrity, someone who sticks to his commitments (even if sometimes to a fault), … and then, when Kirby does the same damned thing, it’s just him being “Saban’s bitch.”

What I find most interesting about all of this is that no one wants to talk about the apparent disconnect between what Richt has been preaching to his guys for years and some of the decisions that he made over the past month or so. As much as I’m sure they still love and respect him, I’m betting that many of our players got mixed messages from Richt during those last couple of weeks.

I agree but the last paragraph. I think that thought is pure McGarity, he waited a few years and when he finally had his chance to tell CMR what he can and can’t do, he jumped on it and told CMR to hit the road and gimme your cell phone and computer, your office will be cleaned out and delivered to your house, gimme your key. (I don’t know, conjecture on my part) It took a few days for CMR to get in front of his players.

I think most of the criticism originated from McG’s ham-handed way of letting CMR go and bringing in CKS. There’s valid questions about letting Pruitt and BMac walk. And Brown walks away after it was all but certain he would remain. Then there’s the issue of the bowl game – and questions about who’s coaching, and who in our program actually gives a damn about it. Finally, our new HC is actually coaching at another school and sharing an office with our ex-DC Pruitt. Both of them are working toward a national championship – at another school!

Now, one or two of the above actions might cause some heads to turn. But all of them together tells me we’ve got one messed up process going on.

Richt, Pruitt & BMac were closing in on a top recruiting class and had built some momentum. They’ll be recruiting against us from now on. In regard to the Davis recruit I’ll say this: until a bama kid actually signs with us I’ll consider it a pipe dream. If I’m not mistaken, Ben Jones was the last guy from bama to sign with us, and he was a legacy.

In today’s Internet world, hype and program momentum are important. Unfortunately, at least at this early stage, Kirby has remained pretty mum. While this may be Saban’s m.o., he has street cred and Kirby does not (with his total number of wins as a head coach being nil).

Recruits have lots of choices and between the so-so excitement around our program and literally having to start the entire recruiting process over (everyone is gone) with less than three weeks to signing day, cannot be good.

Can he work for Bama and still do a decent job for UGA? Perhaps. Are there mission critical items that he’s neglecting? Perhaps not. But I would just like the guy to do the best job for us that he can, which requires that he dedicate himself to that job, rather than another.
