“Unsportsmanlike conduct on all players for both teams…”

One of the more underrated rivalries in college football is the Egg Bowl.  On one level, it’s understandable, as neither team has been particularly relevant from a national title perspective — or even an SEC title perspective — for what seems like ages.  But maybe that’s what adds spice to the affair.  When you’ve got nothing to live for beyond sneering at your rival like this, for example,

… it’s easy to see how the fire gets stoked year after year.  Just because the stakes are lower doesn’t have to mean the anger is less pure.

In that sense, this may be the perfect rivalry.

Ole Miss and Mississippi State didn’t let us down in that regard last night.  The 35-3 outcome may have been a snoozer, but that doesn’t mean it was a boring night.  Not when this happened:

It’s like the old hockey joke about going to a fight and a game broke out.  My favorite comment of the night was this:

“I was helping break some of it up,” Ole Miss tight end Dawson Knox said, “but there’s not much you can do when the whole team is going at it.”

True ‘dat, brah.  Then, again…

The pleasantries continued after the game.  There was the inevitable flag planting on the opponent’s field that wasn’t appreciated.

It may have been Joe Moorhead’s first rodeo, so to speak, but it didn’t take long for him to get in the spirit of the season.

“We coached our kids to do the right thing and play with poise, play with confidence, play with dignity, play with class,” Moorhead said, “but at the same time, we’re not going to take anyone’s s—, either.”

I’m not certain you can play an Egg Bowl with dignity and class.  Even if you could, who would want to watch it?

Oh, and some of you more observant types may have noticed that, even though the ruckus broke out in the wake of an Ole Miss touchdown, the final score only reflected that the Rebs/Landsharks only scored three points on the night.  The discrepancy is easy to explain.

The third-quarter touchdown, the prelude to all the ruckus, didn’t even count. After review, referees determined the play clock had expired before the snap, moving Ole Miss back to Mississippi State’s 41-yard line. The Rebels punted three players later.

Those fight replay reviews are a bitch, man.  That paragraph may be the perfect summary of Ole Miss’ season.

Just another Egg Bowl.

Ole Miss is already awful and it appears that after this season MSU will be right there with them. Back to being bottom dwellers in the West. I think Arkansas will eclipse both of them next year (as weird as that sounds).

Way to early projections for 19

    Alabama
    LSU
    Texas A*M
Big Drop between the top 3 and the rest. Auburn may be sub .500 next year.
    Auburn
    Arkansas
    MSU
    Mississippi

Georgia – big drop after UGA.

UF losing more than people think. Funny how they got 11 players back from suspension and the QB whisperer and still lost to Georgia, Kentucky and Missouri. (According to 247 – UF has the number 24 class in the country. Now they’ll close well, but still be well behind UGA in he final rankings (presently sitting at 3 and likely to finish at 2 – pretty close to Bama). Everyone is making a big deal of their year. There were plenty of pundits saying they would challenge Georgia this year, yet they sit with 3 SEC losses. That Sophomore and Junior group are not ‘all that’. I expect UF to actually remain flat or drop back.

    Florida
    South Carolina
Missouri – loses their QB – so this might be one too high
    Tennesee
Kentucky – lose a ton of Seniors and their RB
    Vanderbilt – loses their QB

Are people really ranking teams for next year with this regular season, post season recruiting class signings, and NFL departures not in the books yet? Who could possibly have enough information on all the vaiables. I will accept any calls for the Barners to be sub-.500 in advance though.

I guess I will hold my remarks about people having Christmas decorations up before the turkey was even through cooking yesterday.

Looks like ole Matt Corral (QB) jumped in there & was kicked out for it. Can remember when we were pursuing that guy. Man, I sure hope we don’t see any fighting tomorrow.. :>):

I thought Corral played after that. Don’t think he got kicked out, but may have missed it. On that touchdown, time had definitely expired. But on the previous play, Ole Miss got a first down and they never stopped the clock to reset the chains. SEC officiating in all its glory.

They need McGarity to give them some peace making lessons, you know, how to take the high road. I just wonder how that will work if Tech looses. The plan seemed to be all about the Hedges if Tech wins.

I had (and still have) people in, couldn’t watch it live and didn’t think to record it. It looked like a snoozer of a game to me beforehand.

While the fight after the touchdown that turned out to be just a practice play might be a microcosm of the whole Egg Bowl experience, there is an even larger irony…That this was SEC Officiating in all of it’s incompetent glory.
It wasn’t until after the review of the fight…to see who would be charged with what, that the officials discovered (bullshit..they were hoping no one would notice and then had to pretend to have discovered) their ineptness. The play should have been blown dead before the pass was even thrown. You can just imagine the official responsible for watching the clock/snap saying “oh shit” to himself when the play scored.
Had they done their job, the fight might very well have never broken out, and Corral, instead of believing he was a cheated hero, would be thinking he should remember his clock management.
BTW…Mississippi State has one heck of a good defense. Ole Miss was supposed to score a lot of points…held to 3. A lot of teams haven’t held anybody to 3 or less in a long time.

Second time this season I have seen the personal fouls called on both teams, as well as players ejected. I think it is a great idea once I realized that every PF after that meant another player was gone. Using it that way gets the game back under control, and gives the coach a reason to keep players in he bench area.
