Tell me, how accurate a take do you find this?
There are two ways to look at the hiring of Mike Leach.
On the one side, the guy has never won anything.
In 18 years as an FBS head coach at Texas Tech and Washington State, he has as many conference championships as you do.
He has never coached a team in a conference title game, has just one top ten finish, just two double-digit win seasons, and for all the flash and fun, there isn’t even an outright division title.
And then there’s the flip side – he has never come close to having as much talent to coach as he has now at Mississippi State.
Nah, Leach and MSU aren’t going take over the SEC West and start winning conference championships – at least not right away – but there’s reason for the big boys to freak out.
Basically, Mississippi State is now going to be a problem to deal with. Even if the championship runs aren’t there, this is going to be a team that can pull off a win against anyone because the system is so dangerous.
Here comes the grand experiment that was worth wondering about when the Tennessee job became open a few years ago. What’s going to happen when the system matches up with a team full of top-shelf recruits on the lines?
My feeling is that if Leach couldn’t pull off a conference championship in the Pac-12 or the Big 12, there aren’t enough stars in the sky to align right to pull off even a divisional title over the likes of Alabama, Auburn and LSU. (Insert “if even Dan Mullen couldn’t” snark here.)
But is he going to make Mississippi State a pain in the ass to play and more than occasionally knock off one of the powerhouses along the way? It’s hard to see how he won’t given his track record.
If I’m an MSU fan realistic about my program’s ceiling, that’s likely enough to make me happy.

My thoughts exactly. They advocate completely opposite game plans, but basically, they are just pains in the ass. Still, if he can put a dent in Bama or the Barn, I’m good with that.

My sense is MSU fans will be happy simply being a legitimate nuisance.
A coach who annoys rivals, consistently pulls the occasional upset, and indulges in far right-wing conspiracies?
I’m telling you, MSU fans will love it.

Leach has been conspicuously absent from social media of late.

Somehow I missed the second half of your reply before I quoted old story above.
So, you’re saying you think Leach is done mouthing off? That his currently being quiet will continue? Based on what? Lol

No, I think he’s just been told to cool his social media jets for a while.
MSU has had quite a few kids hit the transfer portal since the noose tweet.

I think you are right. But I also think his social media cooling won’t last, let alone what he’ll say once his interviews/press conferences get back into gear.

Every year: He’ll win one he shouldn’t have, lose two he shouldn’t have, and the Egg Bowl will boil down to which one will finish 6-6. What difference does it make? MSU hasn’t won an SEC football title since 1941.

Mississippi State has that much more talent than Texas Tech or Wazzu? Not so sure about that.
But I do agree he will be a pain to deal with, sort of like the Johnson at Tech. Just with better quips.

I think MSU does have greater talent than his previous stops but I don’t think MSU is closer in talent to the top of the SEC than what the gap was to the top of the PAC12 or BIG XII when he coached in those conferences.

I think that the key to the analysis is that last section where it is mentioned that Leach will have significantly more talent on the “lines”. That is where the biggest difference will be.

“A team full of top shelf recruits.” Ho-Kay. In comparison to past stops, he’s got better talent now (other than perhaps 2009 Texas Tech). But top shelf? Or even relative to peers? Nah. I agree it’s going to be interesting though.
