Dough for duds

In light of Under Armour’s move to cancel its apparel deal with UCLA, I found this interesting:

Only two Three SEC teams appear in the top 20, TAMU, Auburn and South Carolina, and both the latter two also have contracts with Under Armour.

Georgia’s deal with Nike, in case you were wondering, pays $3.8 million in cash and product per year.

  2. I’m guessing we get into Ohio State territory when the next negotiation happens with Nike. I also expect to see pretty strict guidelines on any alternate jersey requests/proposals as part of the contract given Kirby’s stance that he prefers the traditional look.

Speaking of which, wouldn’t the Virginia game (if it happens) be the perfect time to break out the black tops? An OOC “home” game in a climate controlled building early in the season to encourage people to buy jerseys at the bookstore.

Wow. Stellar negotiating by our jug eared AD. No wonder he’s pinching pennies. I guess he can just make up 10 million or so a year on squeezing the plebs.

Of course McGarity the AD genius “negotiated” a deal with Nike worth less than $5M a year.

It’s that same negotiating prowess that saw us land two straight games in Auburn and then move the Auburn game to October while getting NOTHING IN RETURN.

    What a fucking putz.

I suspect Georgia Baskball’s lack of a profile affects the value of these contracts.

I’m sure that plays in to it, but how do you explain Nebraska? Football prowess is a thing of the past, and they have no other high profile sports that I am aware of where they are a national brand. Someone in Lincoln did a hell of a job on that contract.

I am sure there are many factors that enter into the pricing, but from a sponsor’s standpoint, all that matters is “how much of my product will sell because of this deal?” Multiple sports make a difference, and location makes a difference. Lots of buyers in places like California, Texas and Ohio (which kind of includes Louisville). Notre Dame sells to the whole country. The southeast is huge on football, but there are a lot of powerful schools and there are only so many wallets that have to divided among the schools. Still, we ought to be at least at Auburn’s level.

This is why McGarity sucks, because to your point, Georgia is always in the top-10 if not the top-5 of merchandise sold. EVERY YEAR.

So of course he “negotiates” one of the worst apparel and shoe contracts in the NCAA.

Why would adidas pay Kansas anything, let alone 14mil per year? I’d say the bidding for UGA starts somewhere north of 20 and I’m confident that McG will get his number when it’s all over.

That you’re confident in McGarity’s negotiating tactics FOR GEORGIA makes me question your sanity.

Now, had you said he was negotiating for Auburn…

Really. What about our current number makes him look savvy? Even if he manages to get fair market value this time (doubtful), what about the 40,50,60 million he left on the table in the current deal? You can’t make that up on cheap, uncomfortable, soggy seat back rentals, can you?

Just a question. With the new NIL legislation coming down the pipeline, how will that affect the university’s future deals. There is a finite amount of money to spend. Will they spend it on the university or will the designate a sizable chuck of what could have gone to the school to the individual players to lock them up early?

  12. And only is Nike paying us $13M less per year than OSU, but we gave them the keys to redesign the entire Georgia athletics brand so it streamlines better with the Nike brand as well. Round numbers and robo-dawgs 4 lyfe!
