I can’t say I have zero concerns, but AU’s D seemed average as grits, and while the AU O looked OK, our D is way better than UK’s. Barrett started out the show by acknowledging he said Mike Leach’s O (600+ yards v LSU yesterday) “couldn’t work in the SEC” and that Barrett (in his own words) “is an idiot.”

Its hard to imagine any “smoking” going on by Auburn with what I watched from them on Saturday.
It looks like two fairly pedestrian offenses going up against one another. I’ll give the edge to us because of ST and D.

Given that Sallee is an Auburn shill, I’ll discount that right now. If we come out and play as we did in the first half, yeah, Auburn will have a good chance to win.
Unless 2010 $Cam Newton finds another year of eligibility (Auburn could probably say he took a pay cut to go to the NFL) somewhere, I don’t think Auburn/Bo Nix is going to smoke this Georgia defense.

I don’t put a ton of stock in the opposing-coach-internal-knowledge theory, but its a fair point.
I honestly think this is WAAAAY better for the team than coming out and cruising to an easy victory against a cupcake (and yes, we all expected that against Arkansas).
And I expect practice to be… ahem … focused this week.

True as far as the usual tall tales about “knowing the plays.” You can for damn sure know that Pittman knows any and every fundamental weakness of every offensive lineman out there for Georgia on Saturday. Real easy to blow up some plays by saying “this guy really struggles with X.”

Disappointed in Barrett, who is generally one of the good ones.
He’s 100% bought into Floriduh this season, so he wants to continue to find reason to prop them up at our expense. That includes only paying attention to how bad the offense looked in the first half and ignoring how bad Floriduh’s defense looked all game.

Aaron Murray point about only being in for 1Q and the team playing like crap behind him on O and D that Q (93 yards in penalties!) didn’t help.
And I think that first run where he got absolutely rocked had an effect on a kid playing his first game in 2 years … after brain surgery! The int was bad, although Kirby claims not his fault.
I dare say any one of us might have been a bit tentative after that.
Remember DJ Shockley threw a pick six against UF as frosh and turned out pretty good.

I don’t see how the interception wasn’t on Mathis. Even if the WR ran the wrong route, the pass wasn’t thrown until well after the WR made his break. He had already made a few steps back to the inside. On top of that, the TE was wide open in the end zone. No one was near him. I think Kirby was just covering for his player.

Dawg100 has a good point about Mathis looking a lot like DJS in his first game action for UGA. Hopefully SB can be his David Greene cover until he understands the speed of the game. Still believe Mathis has lots of upside. He’s just not ready for prime time.

Shockley in his first game action played well against Clemson. Those snaps were just as meaningful as the o es Mathis played yesterday.

I will always believe that had DJ not broken his foot the next week running out of bounds at Carolina he would have taken over the starting job from Greene. Pollock’s pick 6 was our only TD that day.

Talent doesn’t mean shit if it can’t be focused to run the offense.
Of course D’Wan Mathis is more talented than Stetson Bennett. No one in their right mind would say otherwise.
However, which QB ran the offense to almost perfection, and which QB looked like a deer in the headlights?

I guess my two points are 1) dwan may indeed be the best qb on our roster which by default means all of our QBs suck. 2) happy for stetson and if he gives us the best chance to win he should start. However, we’re going to lose to every good team we play and forget about winning anything of substance with a 5’2″ walk on playing QB.

First of all, I’ve literally never commented on Mike leach or the air raid, you must have me confused with someone else. I did however agree with you that urban Meyer is an excellent evaluator of qb talent so it was worth noting he offered dwan a scholarship. Turns you and I were both incredibly wrong.
Second of all, Connor Shaw never won so much as a division title much less a championship and please tell me the last national or sec champion that started a walk on at quarterback. I’ll hang up and listen.

Fine, expand the definition to walk ons and former walk ons. I notice you’re still dodging my question “how many sec and national champions were led by walk on or former walk on QBs?”. You’re probably dodging because you know the answer: none. Which means either A) you don’t think we’re winning an sec title and by default nc this year, which means you’re admitting I’m right. Or B) you do think we can win a national or sec championship with a FORMER walk on at QB in which case you’ve simply delayed having to admit I’m right until of the season. because no matter what happens, we all know, even if we don’t want to admit it, georgia is not winning a championship this year given its QB is a former walk on. I would LOVE to be wrong about this, and would happily eat crow at the end of the season if I was…..but I doubt I am.

Well, Baker Mayfield almost -almost- answers your question. He didn’t win a national championship or the SEC, but I would say he had a fairly successful college career.
At 5-10, he walked on at both Texs Tech and Oklahoma.
Not saying the similarity with Stetson goes much further, but trying to answer your question in a semi-serious way with a recent player.

Asks for an example of an sec or national championship winning walk on QB and corch gives two guys (flutie and Murray) who definitely won neither and were DEFINITELY not walk ons. Oh but they were short so in a completely move the goal posts way corch rebutted my point. (Yes I know I said stetson was 5’2″ in jest as a jab at him but notice nowhere did I ask for an example of a short qb who won a championship or say that a short qb couldn’t win a championship, I said a walk on or former walk on)
Dude, just admit I’m right: If our best qb is a walk on, we’re not winning anything significant this year.

all of you are probably too young to remember a damned good QB who played for the ’50s Washington Redskins named Eddie LeBaron who hit the height scale at 5’6″…granted it was a different era from today’s more physically gifted athletes but it showed how heart and determination counts for a lot in this game.

Don’t think he is a walk on now. I think Kirby brought him back last year to back up Fromm with a scholarship. How much taller was the SEC’s all time leading passer Aaron Murray. About the same size huh. I’m not saying he is another AM of course not. Nor does he have AM’s arm strength. What he does have is a better skill set along with understanding of the game and our offensive scam than anyone else eligible to play right now. In short

I agree. I think that Newman may have told Kirby that he was thinking about opting out which is why he went out and got Daniels. Remember thinking it didn’t make much sense at the time as it would result in a crowded qb room. When Newman opted out, I understood why Kirby brought him in. Hopefully he gets cleared soon.

This will be in Seth’s next book I’m sure. Or at least, it’ll be danced around a bunch, with a couple of juicy tidbits, but ultimately it’ll never fully be found out.

We had 8 QBs I think it was at one point. Nobody does that. I was kinda shocked when got JT until a) newman left and b) I saw mathis. Now it makes a lot more sense.

Dwan is a kid coming off of brain surgery and starting his first college game as the starting QB in the SEC. That’s a lot. He must have looked good enough in practices to be trusted with the start. His premier could have gone great, so-so, or bad.. It went the latter. That doesn’t mean the kid is crummy or through. He was bad yesterday…but so was the whole of the offense for the first half. Monken and Kirby now know to slow down a little on his immersion into the game and bring him along slowly. He’s got talent, it just got buried by the jitters and penalties yesterday. The offensive line must step up it’s game to give this offense a chance, and it did in the second half. If Daniels is able to go against Auburn, we may see a similar performance, or maybe the offense will look like MSU’s. I’ll bet we start Bennett and bring Daniels or whoever along in favorable situations.
The refs screwed Kentucky.
Dawgs will improve a lot during this week. (bad snaps, penalties, blocking).

The ONLY way auburn smokes is is if we turn the ball over. I could see us losing the game while getting the QB situation sorted but I could also see is winning out after.
I’m just not panicked. Our defense and special teams will keep us in it and although we didn’t have there greatest success running, I also felt like we intentionally didn’t learn on Zamir. The previous play and his td run showed me that he’s as close to the player everyone recruited as he’s been since before his high school knee injury. He showed the strength to get a short 1st an then turned around and made 2 impressive cuts on that TD. Honestly, I might be most concerned about the OL but they were almost night and day with the change at QB. I have to doubt that we’ve taken a step back there but they should be good enough to not cost us a game.
The most frustrating things for me about the O yesterday wasn’t the inability to score. It was the fact that they turned it over or were inept when defense and special teams gave them turnovers and great girls position all game. Hell, we averaged starting on our 48 up until our first TD. Still, the staff clearly never panicked and tried a lot of things and played a lot of people. I really feel like Smart was willing to sacrifice a little production to try all of that. The offense is going to have to go through growing pains. Just don’t turn the damn ball over.

Your first paragraph is exactly why I expect Bennett to start this week’s matchup. I’m sure D’wan will get some series mixed in, because we need to get him up to speed with a quickness, but the game is too important and Kirby is going to want to keep things under control. I’m a bit worried about the run blocking by the OL, tbh. I was actually a bit surprised by Bennett’s zip on the ball and he seemed to get it out of there quickly. His height is a concern, but the way Monken had him rolling out should reduce concerns there. I do not know if we win a championship with Bennett, but I would say he maybe gives us some breathing room to ease the other guys in.

Beat maybe, Smoked, not going to happen. Ole Piss put 35 on them and if they had a defense could have won. If our offense plays like we did in the second half for even 3 quarters Saturday we will win. Start SBIV and bring D’wan in as a change of pace. If Daniels is ready, please don’t start him, he hasn’t been hit in almost as long as D’Wan so we won’t know what will happen. By the way when a QB gets “Happy Feet” bad things happen unless he can run like a damn speeding bullet. Passing with Happy Feet is a sure fire way to turn it over.

I’m not writing off Mathis yet. All the penalties, no running game, and a rookie qb in his first football game in a couple of years is not pretty. Bennett came out, stayed calm and focused and showed what this offense can look like even if the qb isn’t an elite athlete. You could see the potential in Mathis, but learning on the job against who we got coming up ain’t easy. I’ll take Bennett the defense and special teams beating everybody but Bama going into the Florida game with D’Wan coming off the bench to beat the gators.

There are plenty of guys who could run and throw the ball hard who never made it in college football. He did none of the things you’d expect from a QB at a major school. He left the pocket too quickly. He held the ball too long. He ran tentatively. In short, he melted down. Maybe the big hit spooked him, or maybe it’s just who he is, but I didn’t see the potential people have mentioned.

I mostly agree. He’s got a cannon and is athletic but it obviously takes more than that. He has to have a good head and he seemed really aloof several times. Monken and the QB coach are gonna have earn keep with the QB room this year.
It really wouldn’t surprise me if Mathis starts Saturday for the same reason he did yesterday- potential along with doing good things in practice. I feel like he has good potential while Bennett has reached his. Maybe I’m wrong or maybe Daniel if the man of he gets cleared.

First, I’m really pulling for this kid. But it was clear that the day was too big for Mathis.
Decision making was poor the first six drives; which you could contribute to nerves, penalties, etc. What bothered me, was with the game in hand, he had a chance to come in during the fourth quarter and settle down, improve the decision making and did not show a lot of improvement.
If Daniels comes in and plays well, the QB competition is over, at least for this year and provided that he stays healthy.

UGA covers the 26 and click bait Sally says based on his wrong prediction of our starting QB we are going to get smoked by Aubie. I feel better now that he says we are going to get Smoked at home. I would really been worried if he picked us to win big. Past dumb ass predictions are no indication of correctness.

The most concerning thing to me yesterday was all the penalties. It does not matter who is under (or in this day and age behind) center. If the play is going to get called back it does not matter show impressive it was. The second most concerning thing was the abysmal line play, especially Trey Hill since he was supposed to be the veteran anchor. He will be lucky to be the center by the end of the season.
On a happier note the D was as advertised and special teams were superb. Finally we have a return game again.
Not panicking just just yet, but there is going to be a lot of alcohol and Tums consumed this season

If I had to guess? Ron Courson doesn’t like the lateral range of motion in his knee.
I’ve had to pretty serious knee injuries, one for each knee. It’s what kept me from continuing my Marine Corps career (not much use for a grunt who can’t march), and on my first one, the lateral range of motion and the ability to make quick, sudden movements without worry of another tear was the last thing to get checked off the list.
