Mark Richt has lost control over Kirk Herbstreit’s health.

Sorry, I had to do it.

ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit says he has tested positive for COVID-19 and will have to call the College Football Playoff semifinal between No. 2 Clemson and No. 3 Ohio State from home.

Herbstreit posted Tuesday night on Twitter that he was feeling good and his family is OK.

He said he will still be part of College GameDay on the morning of Jan. 1 and on the call of the Sugar Bowl with play-by-play announcer Chris Fowler in New Orleans that night.

May he recover quickly, but too bad he didn’t lose his voice.

I don’t get what having an isolated Herbie adds to the broadcast. It’s just going to make it awkward and performative.

Do a quick drop-in with him during pregame, at halftime, and after the game if his thoughts are that important.

Well they can’t admit they’re not.

As is with most that believe they have a better perspective or in fact know more than others, to social distance both the audio/visual portion Agent Herbstreit to the planet Pluto is to close for my big screen…(if he took fowler with him would be good for humanity)….

I agree, but a bunch of the bowls have had remote commentators already. It really hasn’t dropped off much in quality (started low to begin with).

Give me the local voices any day of my life…hell, I’d listen to the opposition voices if they keep my short attention span…

In case you haven’t noticed, the majority of the ESPN games this season have been called from home. The announcers are watching the same feeds we are and telling us what we’re seeing. Sometimes it’s not too noticeable, and others it really sucks like your Zoom calls with your grandparents that can’t figure out the technology.

So, unfortunately, Herbie will still blather on non-stop whether he’s in his basement, or in the press box.

      • Oh – ive noticed. I notice the endless fake fan noise, the bands when there are no bands, the lag, the odd timing, the refs that still cant get a mike in 2020, even though that tech is 40 years old, commentators that feel they need to talk as if it is radio….

So really, nothing has changed. 😉

The fake crowd noise is really jarring. And if you want to know how they manage to screw up instant replay when everyone with half a brain can see the correct call, I give you Rogers Redding (the Tech rube that used to be head of SEC officials). He was the “rules expert” for one of the games last week. There was a replay and everyone said “black”. Redding said “white”. The call was black. Happened two more times where Redding went against what anyone with eyes could see, and both of those times he was wrong as well. So for three straight calls, he managed to miss them. They quit going to him after the third one.

And since the replay booths are usually manned with retreads like Redding, that’s how you get these screwy calls that everyone can see are wrong.

          • Think it would be hard for the color man to see certain things looking at the same bad angle I am looking at at home. They should just not talk. Nobody watching anyhow. I remember the bad call guy from previous weeks. Its asinine. The whole thing is.

Any chance Danny Kannell has been hanging with Herbie or McElroy lately?

  5. Ok ABC! Put me in the box for $25k plus my travel. Measly crumbs! I will say things like “dang what a play” and then shut up. It’ll be your best broadcast ever!

Why on earth would they have a guy call from his house? What a disaster. SO hes got covid, but 3 or 5 technicians have to go in his house to set up. And the lag. The lag is going to be too much for football. What a joke.

It’s funny that none of y’all seem to realize that the majority of the games this season have been called from home.

Beth, bless her heart, is the worse…and that says a lot….she looks up superlatives on a chart to call them differently each play…she’s consistently late on calls and her macho low voice is rediculous. You know you’re dealing with the lowest level game when you hear her voice…and now they have yet another female announcer. It’s like having John Wayne call a knitting contest…ugh!
