Perhaps one day Jamie Newman will let us know what he was thinking when he bailed on Georgia’s 2020 season, because based on this ($$), if he followed an agent’s advice, that dude must have one smooth sales pitch.
… Newman is a sturdy, mobile passer, but his 2019 film showed shaky pocket presence and undeveloped passing reads. With improvements as a senior in SEC play, some around the league thought he could turn himself into a top-100 draft pick.
Now he’s hoping for a hot week at the Senior Bowl to get the attention of NFL teams. Good luck with that, Jamie.
Meanwhile, here’s an observation that will blow you away (at least it did me):
Seeing Jones removed from the Alabama offense will be helpful for evaluators. The fact that an NFL prospect all-star game is a slight step down in talent compared to what he had in Tuscaloosa says a lot about that Crimson Tide offense.
I’m not sure when I’ll get over my double take every time I reflect upon the fact that Georgia led Alabama late in the third quarter at Tuscaloosa last season. With Stetson Bennett at quarterback…
**************************************************************************
UPDATE: Stay classy, my brothers and sisters.
Newman will be wearing a Demon Deacons’ helmet as he looks to take the next step with an impressive week in front of NFL general managers and head coaches this week, Senior Bowl officials confirmed.
“We had to put him in Wake Forest stuff,” Senior Bowl executive director Jim Nagy said. “If we put him in Georgia stuff …. the vitriol among DawgNation on Twitter has been unbelievable.”
Haven’t y’all got bigger things to fret about?
Re: your last point Senator, that’s what solid defense does in the age of offense. People act like UGA’s D got shredded wholesale. No, they got shredded for about two and a half quarters. I remain steadfast in my opinion that Daniels wasn’t ready physically against Bama. But you’re right, perhaps the best team in NCAA football history was down to UGA in third quarter with their third/fourth best option at QB.
That Kirby can’t coach thing is looking more lazy. Yo the day.

Perhaps if Mr. Newman had played instead of Bennet, we win that game.

the scuttlebutt was, that he wasn’t putting in the time to learn the offense.
nonetheless, not sure if anyone would have made a difference in Tuscaloosa.

Against a fully healthy Bama? I can’t see it, but it’s maybe a closer loss. If he played vs Florida though? Odds of winning a shootout go way up with even a slightly above replacement level QB performance.

Hopefully you’ll get over your double take about the same time Tennessee fans get over leading Georgia at the half last year. Or maybe around the time Arkansas fans get over leading Georgia at the half. But probably not.

The Dawgs performance against Bama for two and a half quarters has me exulting for the the 2021 season. After re-watching the Peach Bowl I’m brought back to terra firma. A lot of work to be done between now and 4 September. I’m confident that Kirby is on the mutha.
As for Newman? I wouldn’t piss down a quitter’s throat if his guts were on fire.

That’s a hell of a way to feel about a kid who obstensibly was told he couldn’t pass Trevor/Fields with a spectacular season, and so playing would only hurt him. I wish he’d have played too, but I can’t fault the kid for making a decision in a crazy year like this.

Surely it’s been discussed, but are there quotes or stories that indicate maybe Daniels was just being Monken’s guy? Newman must’ve felt misled, no?

Daniels didn’t start until the 7th game, and if we assume Newman was competent, Daniels wouldn’t have started at all.

I thought Daniels showed up w/ everyone believing he was healthy, but then found out he wasn’t. If Monken preferred him when he walked in, thinking Daniels would start, easy to see why Newman would leave.

The timeline for that doesn’t make a lot of sense, seeing as Daniels was known to not be cleared when Newman opted out.
LikeLiked by 2 people
Why doesn’t the timeline fit?
Daniels shows up, wins Monken’s favor. Newman is pissed.
Daniels and coaches realize he’s hurt
Newman leaves despite Daniels being hurt bc he and his advisors feel betrayed

I mean, maybe? Daniels’ transfer was in May, though, and it took until September for Newman to figure out this hypothetical for which you have no evidence? I don’t really get why you’re trying to rationalize the kid’s decision.

How a guy who hasn’t seen live football in 12 months expects to show out at a Senior Bowl is kind of baffling.
He lost a year of reps. That’s a massive hole in his development.
He’s put undrafted free agent on the table. He might blow up and get himself into the mid round mix, but he’s going to be operating under immense pressure. One shot.

If we can put holy righteous beat downs fast and furious on a whole bunch of these dumpster fire teams – Brock should get a lot of playing time, which is good for him, good for us, hopefully keep him happy to be the starter for 2022. And if he is killing it and beats out Daniels, so be it. Kirby needs to handle this right and come correct. Its a good situation for the learning curve and hand-off for both QBs. There is perfect class separation. Just can’t go man-balling in the 2nd Q when up by 10 points.

Lots of tape on Richard. Coaches will say good things.
Fortunately for him the game is more about covering ground, having good instincts and eye discipline than being physical these days. He checks all those boxes. He has what defenses these days need.

Most of the Senior Bowl is about the practices and meeting with coaches and scouts. I’m guessing he’ll be able to do most everything related to preparation for the game. Given how much they actually rotate players in the game, there won’t be enough film to make much of a difference.

Yeah, there’s lots of tape on Richard but it’s also “what have you done lately” and there are lots of good players that ARE there, making plays and impressing NFL scouts. It’s not the end of Lecount’s career, but it definitely will cost him draft position and money.

My thoughts on Jamie Newman are similar to my thoughts on any Georgia player who leaves school early, even when I feel like they’re making the wrong decision: dude tried to make the best decision he could for himself and his family, and I wish him well. As always, I shake my head at anyone directing vitriol in a kid’s direction online.
With that said, Jamie Newman is a Wake Forest Demon Deacon. He’s a graduate of Wake Forest University and unless NFL scouts are going to put a lot into practice footage from a handful of preseason drills at UGA, the entire body of work on which he will be evaluated by the NFL will be in a Wake Forest uniform. He never earned the right to wear a black “G” on his helmet. He’s as much a Georgia Bulldog as Garth Brooks is a New York Met – they each spent about as much time in preseason practices with those respective teams. I honestly don’t know why he’d want to wear a UGA helmet, really.
LikeLiked by 3 people
I’d rather he didn’t, but it really doesn’t bother me one bit that Newman made that choice… on a personal level. The indecision that led to him making the call at such a late stage, to the detriment of his entire team, isn’t a trait you want to carry further into adulthood, but I doubt many people trashing the guy had to make such a huge decision at his age either.
But… he never played for Georgia, he did play for Wake so you wear that helmet. It’s that simple. He’s also going to have fans of both teams pissed at him for it, so hey, maybe he’s learning a lesson in “consequences.”
If not now, he’s damn sure learn about consequences during the draft.

With no combine this year, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Newman at UGA’s Pro day. Kirby has done similar before. It may chap some fans, but it sends the message to recruits and potential transfers that the program will always have their best interest in mind and do everything it can to help get players in the league. Kirby=ABC.

100% agree. We’re a program that doesn’t shy away from our role as a quasi-minor league program for the NFL. The main goal is to win championships, but it’s a chicken and egg kind of thing. You need good players to win, you need to openly develop them for the NFL to get them in the first place. It’s a circular thing and this is just part of it.

He left us high and dry but I’m not all that worried about it at this point. We’re better off heading into 2021 with the way things shook out, and even with Newman our season probably would have ended in Atlanta, or much more painfully at some point after that.
