Shot.
Commitment to the song has been echoed by the Board of Regents and by Steve Sarkisian, the new football coach who was hired in January.
From the start, Sarkisian signaled he would take a different approach than former coach Tom Herman, who said he would respect players who did not want to stay to sing the song.
“I know this much,” Sarkisian said, “‘The Eyes of Texas’ is our school song. We’re going to sing that song. We’re going to sing that proudly.”
Chaser.
“UT needs rich donors who love The Eyes of Texas more than they need one crop of irresponsible and uninformed students or faculty who won’t do what they are paid to do,” Steven Arnold, a retired administrative law judge and UT-Austin law school graduate, wrote to Hartzell. When reached for comment, Arnold said he had not donated to the university in recent years and has been completely turned off of college football after the events of the last year.
Leave the fucking bottle on the bar.
“It’s time for you to put the foot down and make it perfectly clear that the heritage of Texas will not be lost,” wrote another donor who graduated in 1986. Their name was also redacted by UT-Austin. “It is sad that it is offending the blacks. As I said before the blacks are free and it’s time for them to move on to another state where everything is in their favor.”
At least two people argued that because the Black student population at UT-Austin is small, their voices should not outweigh the larger wishes of the alumni base.
“Less than 6% of our current student body is black,” wrote Larry Wilkinson, a donor who graduated in 1970, quoting a statistic UT-Austin officials have stated they’re working to improve. “The tail cannot be allowed to wag the dog….. and the dog must instead stand up for what is right. Nothing forces those students to attend UT Austin. Encourage them to select an alternate school ….NOW!”
Good luck on the recruiting trail, Steve-o.

From and article I read the song was often sang in Black Face for some un-Godly reason. The other point was that the song was loosely based off something Robert E. Lee would say that the president at the time would para-pharse.

“To trace the history of the tune, you must go back to the late 1860s, when William Prather was a law student at Washington College in Virginia (now called Washington and Lee University). Robert E. Lee was the university president and would frequently remind students that “the eyes of the South are upon you.” According to Dr. Edmund T. Gordon, a professor of African and African Diaspora Studies and Anthropology at UT, the saying was Lee’s way of reminding students to work hard and to uphold Southern traditions.
The saying stuck with Prather as he became a lawyer and then eventually a UT regent. By 1899, he was named president of the university and delivered an address to students on the first day of school. According to a 1926 Dallas Morning News column remembering her father, Prather’s daughter said the crowd roared when the president said: “I would like to paraphrase [Lee’s] utterance, and say to you, ‘Forward, young men and women of the University, the eyes of Texas are upon you!” From then on, it became Prather’s catchphrase. His daughter recalled one instance when students were waiting to hear the president speak. “Bet you a quarter he says ‘eyes of Texas’ before he gets through,” one student said to another. He won the quarter.” per the article.

He had the ability to tell them if you do what I say then I will produce championships because he had done it before at LSU. Could Saban do it at Texas? If they are so dumb about a really crappy song (it’d be different if it were a good song like “Rocky Top” or if for some reason a school got super fired up for “Juicy” by Notorious BIG) but this is a song that jack in the boxes play or very similar. I’m curious about what people think about the Redcoats’ elimination of Tara’s Theme from their post-game. I don’t think I was ever still in the stadium at that point, but I know a lot of people (Capt. Obvious Tony Barnhart for one) liked the tradition. UNACCEPTABLE! Only a dirty racist would dare to be against such a benign tune named Cop Killer. That attitude is what leads to banning of innocuous products such as Cop Killer bullets that Mel and Danny led us to believe would penetrate a bulldozer blade. Teflon coating actually renders CK bullets 20% less effective on Kevlar body armor. They’re designed to protect the rifling of the gun barrel. But you can’t explain that to the reactionary ban crowd.
That sort of sensationalist shit led to Winchester taking Black Talon bullets off the market. Those contumacious bastards then introduced the SXT (Same eXact Thing) simply not coloring it that evil black. Now Winchester markets a similar bullet called the Ranger T. I could care less about trumpets playing or Herschel highlights before the game or Union Army victory songs, but I am probably less welded to some of this stuff than others.

I think Siskey’s is trying to insult Texas A&M (And doing a fine job of it).

ATM would be whipping the hell out of Texas right now, and other than some very old traditions and songs, theyve moved way on from UT. But, roger roger

All this is true, Chuck. But the general arrogance of the Longhorn nation keeps them from realizing it and that makes it even better. FWIW, If the Big 12 or the “Longhorn Network” had half the clout of the SEC Texas v TA&M would still be a traditional rivalry.
I think the record is 76-37ish in Texas’s favor…NTIGAS.

While I’m on the soapbox, Someone at A&M recognized an opportunity then took advantage of it. You think that sweet, sweet SEC money and recruiting has anything to do with A&M and the general improvement in their program? I do.
I wonder if it was offered to Texas and they turned it down.

Ha! TAMU grads do a good enough job insulting themselves. One of their grads is why I first heard “You can always tell a Texan…”. The shortest distance between two points is NOT a straight line in the mountains there, Hondo.

OU 15-7 v. UT since 2000. UT 62-49-5 overall v. OU. But whatever.
This is their battle of the Alamo/San Jacinto. Kudos to UT ($$$$) Alum.

I realize that it hasn’t been as one sided as other rivalries except when OU beat em by 60 or so early in Stoops tenure but OU gets their players from Texas including Mayfield (Austin), Murray and Hurts (via Bama) etc. I would argue that OU’s success is in large part due to Texas’s general ineptitude and a bigger issue than a song that plays on free domain cartoons is/would be more important to me- a big time UT donor/booster.

I’m not sure where you’re going here, but OU has 6 straight XII trophies and 14 overall to Texas’s 3. OU has been to the CFP 4 times plus 2 more NY6 bowls. Texas has been to 1 NY6 bowl.

Dem Aggies got it right in their fight song
“The Eyes of Texas are Upon You…
That is the song they sing so well..
SOUNDS LIKE HELL…
So it’s goodbye to Texas University
So long to the urnge and the white”…

I don’t think the use of Eyes is wrong. I think it’s good for UT to acknowledge its racist past because it helps us all to understand the pervasiveness of racism in our history and even now.
But I also think it’s not an inherently racist song: the lyrics and to a degree the history promote the notion of doing one’s best and living a life one can be proud to lead: “the community looks to you for leadership so act like a leader!” That’s a pretty easy message to own across society, I think.
Rich white men getting their cackles up and telling black students to shut up or get out? That’s straight up racist bullshit. And I want to congratulate them on making their new coach’s job harder than it has to be.

They will require a student to sing a song? Compelling somebody to sing sounds like commie China or Cool Hand Luke. How exactly does education at a University co-exist with that mindset? You get to act like a tyrant in a democracy that celebrates freedom? Texans are fucking weird. My way or the highway, asshole. Well I say, death to dumbass fascists, set to the tune of row, row a boat.

Agreed. I never liked having to recite the pledge of allegiance, sing a school song, sound off with slogans or jodies on a run/march. Smacks of indoctrination and fake juice.
