I know it’s the offseason and I know they’re pundits, but there’s something about the methodology behind Stewart Mandel’s and Bruce Feldman’s top 25 coaches lists ($$) that doesn’t sit well with me.
Ed Orgeron.
Mandel has him eighth on his list (“This spot is a nod to Orgeron’s status as a recent national champion who continues to recruit at a very high level.”) and Feldman ranks him even higher, at seventh. (“Still, even as bad as 2020 was, Orgeron is 13-4 vs. top-10 opponents the past four years.”)
So, they both kind of held their noses with regard to the poor job Orgeron did last year — and it was bad to see a defending national champ fall as far as LSU did in the following season — to rank him among the elite. (Feldman ranks him above Day and Smart.)
But here’s the thing — how do you factor a comment like this into the equation? (h/t)
I can’t imagine an elite coach being that slack. And it clearly had an impact! I know Orgeron has many pluses on his resume, including that natty, but I don’t know how you can judge him to be all that Mandel and Feldman think he is, given his management approach. Unless you’re factoring in luck, I suppose. (Although if that’s the case, I should note that Gus Malzahn and his rabbit’s foot made neither list.)
Bruce did write 2 books about Coach O. I don’t know what Stewart’s blind spot is.

Not Sure how Mandel (1a and 1b) can list anyone alive as even being close to Saban but I guess that’s sports writing and a way to make people like me question it and garner attention. This is such a subjective topic. Both were all over the place and there was no criteria for basis. Sorry for for the cynicism but I got caught up and here it is

Unless they are trying to influence recruits to their version of top coaches I fail to see what possible relevance these lists have. Who cares if they think that Joe Shit, the rag man is a great coach or not. Ed O caught lightning in a bottle. Otherwise he’s average at best. He can recruit LA., but can you imagine that a Georgia boy would listen to that gravel-voiced idiot? These guys have a terminal case of the dumb-ass.

Speaking of which, has that kid found a home yet? Returning to LSU? What?

You follow these writer’s a closer than we do to get info for GTP. Sometime on a slow news day may be you can do a list and rank the writers from “know what they are doing” to “just talking out their ass”. Turn about is fair play for them to be in the cross hairs.

Both had Kirby below Brian Kelly.

I know. The school does most of his recruiting . He gets a hall pass to the playoffs each year and can’t capitalize on it. Way overrated

I disagree. ND doesn’t recruit as well as people think. Kelly’s never had an elite QB. They play a respectable schedule and his teams are well coached.

I believe they also have higher academic standards compared to many schools and the standards apply to “student athletes”

Yet Kelly is O-fer against Kirby ( as is ND against Georgia!).
I have a co-worker who is a big ND fan. I love reminding him Georgia is the only school with a winning record against the Irish.

Considering how generally garbage The Athletic became under Stew’s terrible leadership, if you told me he had Orgeron ranked second it wouldn’t surprise me.

I’m beginning to think you just hate all journalists that aren’t Georgia homers. The Athletic has been worth every penny for me.

When I have I ever said ANYTHING that would give anyone that impression.
Please, provide examples.
My issues with The Athletic has everything to do with how they handled the China-Hong Kong issue last year and how they continue to provide cover for hypocrites like LeBron James by never asking him or anyone ANY questions about China’s ongoing genocide and how LeBron specifically became a billionaire on the back of slave labor.
Almost all their writers are a bunch of virtue signaling hypocrites and Stew Mandel sets the editorial tone.

What’s not revealed in the snippet of a quote is if the admin pressured big O to keep certain assistants on, especially in the beginning of his taking over the coaching helm. We do now know there was massive coverup going on behind the scenes as LSU was paying out Miles hush money and giving out NDAs like candy. I have no personal knowledge, but it is possible that the admin wanted to curtail O’s control over the program…because they probably felt they ceded too much control to creepy uncle Lester and it bit LSU in the ass. Up to being hired as LSU’s coach, he had flamed out at Ole Miss, seen USC crumble and not be considered for its HBC…so I’m not surprised the LSU may put training wheels on capt. Cajun Enunciation in the beginning.

He actually did a decent job at USC for the half season he was in charge. The kids wanted him to continue there.
I think he’s the perfect fit for LSU and I like having him in CFB. But he’s a pretty good coach at best.

I agree with you on his coaching chops…especially at LSU…(his Ole Miss days might not have flamed out as I wrote) admittedly I love how he says Go Tigers after every interview…it is personal for him, and that shines through

He probably didn’t have time to interview. Don’t forget his wife was divorcing him.

$1 says Day and Smart have head coaching jobs in 2023 and Orgeron doesn’t.
O is not a good coach. Nor do I think he is hungry to win.

Sorry – Coach O cant see the screen to read this critique because of the SEC Trophy, Heisman Trophy, and Natty Trophy that are sitting in the way.

And he did that all in one year, hence the saying he caught lightning in a bottle. How many other SEC teams not named Bama did that?
I’ll be shocked if he wins the SEC west ever again.

I think coach O is a perfect fit for LSU. Seems like he can coach his ass off – when he feels like it. And those LA players have loads of talent – which they display when they feel like it. Yes, they are inconsistent. But when they get hot, like they did in 2019, they are awesome.
Coach O has a natty. And that should rate pretty high on any list.
