I have simply suggested that the idea that NIL could be innocently applied without corrosive effect was grossly and recklessly naive. Stupid. Short sighted. Ignorant. Pick a word. If its bad, it fits.
Wouldn’t shock me that it gets so ugly that they revisit the profit model of college athletics and return to (or invent, if you prefer) the education model.

Retailers pay influencers not because of the influencers’ college affiliations but because of the number of thousands of people who follow them.

This is where I fall of the wagon. In the school of music at UGA my trumpet professor would hand me a post it with a number on it and say “the Charleston Symphony needs an extra next weekend. They are expecting to hear from you.” So, I call, and they put me up in the Best Western for 3 nights, rehearsal day and two shows. The disconnect is purely BS. I made thousands from my “rec’s” from the school of music because people would call the school looking for labor. We loved it, it served as positive reinforcement, both ways. School had/has a rep, sending out a student worked both ways. Organization reached out, school sent qualified personnel, said personnel happy for the experience and money and resume material. Athletes can’t do this and it’s dumb.
OTOH, the big money makes this much more volatile. When that can of worms opens it will be much different as we are seeing. The only issue I see is that the “evil empire” is ESPN/TV. I have said from the beginning of these huge media contracts, there is way too much money involved for everything to remain ethically true. Billions breeds manipulation.

The NFL like the NCAA or the P5 presidents won’t do a thing to change their money train until forced to. Well it looks like for some of them that train is coming down the track ever faster. It’s their own fault greed created the current system.

Top college basketball and coaches are over paid by stupid AD’s. These same coaches come and go to increase their wealth without penalty. Student athletes can’t allow them to do want the coaches do. There’s a good life lesson.

There was a time I thought I would never ever think I could except more benefits for CFB players. Over time people like our last AD repeatedly turning his back on our kids in need while supporting ever growing revenue for his personal paymasters. Has made me understand these greedy assholes only care about themselves.

I don’t know the details of the NIL rules. Are there limitations on how much a player can make? Say I own a private business and am a big Dawg fan. Could I call the #1 RB prospect and offer him a million dollars if he would let me put his picture on my website? Would the amount offered have to reflect a “reasonable value “ for that NIL? Would the recruit have to sign without hearing any offers, then get what he can from his NIL? Would players threaten to enter the transfer portal if some wealthy supporters don’t pony up? I’m a free market guy, so I support NIL rights for players, I just think it’s going to get pretty complicated. ( not that “getting complicated “ is a reason not to have NIL)

Gurkha, recruiting is a yearly business. UGA offers over 100 kids yearly. Best case scenario for you as a lottery winner is that you pony up a million dollars every year for an 18 year old kid. If you committed a million to Zach Evans in December 2019 would you commit a million in 2020 for a high school kud?

It’s a good question. Donors are asked to buy out coaches contracts alot — I would think that is an example of less than optimal ROI. I am not suggesting there is a market to pay $1M to a college recruit only suggesting there are folks who spend money differently than most folks.

Well, if it’s just about ROI, then why have alumni been slipping players (or their families) small and in some cases very large amounts of cash to play for good old Alumni U. They certainly are not getting any monetary reward as it stands now yet it still happens. Sometimes it is just about ego because some people have enough money that trying to manipulate things for their team to win is no different than loosing a few thousand in a poker game. It is nothing more than another game to them.

Adjusted for inflation, I would love to know what Eric Dickerson was payed to go to SMU and I’m quite sure that it would be more than lunch money. The old SWC was rife with paying players (not conjecture but proven fact) and far as I know the people paying the players never saw a dime in return. It was all about ego. Different people different size egos with different size wallets. Could I see two monied alums from Texas and Texas A&M getting into a bidding war for a player that results in a Texas size payout? Living amongst all of them, you damn right I could see it and in fact expect it. If I had told you 25-30 years ago that a MLB, NFL, NBA player would be making over $40 million a year you would have laughed your ass off. Once again, the camel getting his nose under the tent.

Egos with very large bank balances know no bounds. Someone that is worth a few billion from old Alumni U will think no more of it than you or I would giving them a $20. There are people that write fat checks to colleges all the time. With the transfer portal, what’s to stop a booster from letting in be known that we will pay $1 million in NIL sponsorship for the RB position (or you name the position) knowing he can lure away someone like Herschel or Bo for a 1 year rental to potentially fill out a roster to get a NC.

Last I checked it seems Isiah might have a little money left, chances of making a team, not so much. It’s gonna happen, there will be embarrassing issues as well as great situations come from this. The only thing you can count on is It’s gonna happen. Just like expansion of the playoffs and if the bowls could ever agree it could even work for some interesting bowl games and some blowouts as well. Consider the past chairman of Fiesta Bowl, where unscrupulous strippers and planes and even weddings were paid for. The trash follows the cash. Look and see the $25 million that was spent on just the sponsorship naming of the tax exempt bowl this past year. It’s coming July 1st. to a college town you all love.

Player pay is coming.
Those that hate it most are liberal college administrators. They like to control that cash and keep that slush rolling in.
I used to be a romantic about the issue, but I’ve since changed my viewpoint. If I’m honest with myself, I was defending things ideologically that I didn’t practically care about.
I don’t care about women’s sports and if they are negatively impacted budget-wise. I don’t care if the big lurches on the field can read. I don’t care if the University gets any benefit at all. I don’t care if Middle Tennessee’s or North Texas’s can support their programs.
Not really. Not in any true sense.
I just root for the red and black team with the G in football. The rest is bullshit. So if the players make lots of money, I don’t really care. Better in their hands than in the hands of the pinko scum running the University.
The fun part will be watching SCOTUS, lefty scum trying to somehow split the baby to save their indoctrination camps a few shekels while still claiming to champion the minority.

I had that thought all day. SB is right in that it is coming and you can either embrace it or walk away from it. I can also lament the fact that the change is not, in my opinion, for the better.
