G-Day ain’t the time for manball, peeps.
“I didn’t see it that way. I saw it where I thought our guys came out a little bit slow but a lot of times the vertical passing game is based on your ability to run the ball and that wasn’t our goal this game, to come out and establish the run and really run the ball hard. G-Days are built around a lot of two-minute drives. You want to go hurry-up. We want to throw and catch the ball. That reduces the risk of injury. So when you’re doing that, there’s a lot of intermediate passing game, kind of like we did in 7-on-7 before it. The defense is also playing some quarter, quarter, halves, which doesn’t allow you to take the top off a lot of times. But I did think that we threw and caught the ball well. We didn’t have all our arsenal out there in terms of wideouts but the ones that were out there, I thought they competed really well. Some of the DBs got to make plays and then some of them we didn’t make plays but that’s always going to be the case in a spring game. I was pleased with the effort and attitude of the guys with it, though.”
Skill players needed reps. The green defensive backs needed to be tested. We see a lot in G-Day, but, ultimately, Smart sees it as just another scrimmage. That’s how you get to almost 100 passes attempted on a nice spring day in April.
Don’t try to read anything more into it.

There is a bunch of time between now and fall to improve. There will be a big leap between now and then.

In the running game, I liked what I saw from Zeus. Another 5 months away from his knee injuries … I think we’re going to like what he brings to the run game in the fall (and he was a good check down option as well). Cook did good things with the ball in his hands (he’s going to take a wheel route to the house at some time this year). Milton is going to be a star (he is playing that Dre Swift role very well). Edwards still looks like a guy who is like tackling a bowling ball coming at you full speed.
The riches in Dell McGee’s RBU room are still jaw-dropping – that was without Kenny Mac available.

I love our running backs. We have to run hurry up so they can all get the ball more often.

I’m encouraged with our DB’s. If we can keep our QB room intact (and continue to bring in top talent) we are solid for the next couple of years. We will seemingly always have RB’s. The WR’s looked better than expected considering we were missing some key pieces. I thought the OL showed well considering the DL & LB they were facing.

Exactly…this was always just another scrimmage with some practice for game time experience in the stadium with fans, tv, distractions, etc. Criticism of play calling, personnel packages and even some performances is off if you were expecting more. The kids and coaches looked like they were having a lot of fun out there. Good for them.

Other than the kicking game, that was a very satisfying afternoon yesterday. And now the long wait begins.
