“Anything that works elsewhere works even better in Las Vegas…’’

What a time to be alive, people.

One of the most influential event organizers in Las Vegas hopes to match the Pac-12 against opponents from the SEC and Big Ten in early-season showcase games at Allegiant Stadium in coming years.

“That’s something we will pursue,” Steve Hill, the CEO of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, told the Hotline.

Hill “has a close working relationship with new Pac-12 commissioner George Kliavkoff, the former president of MGM Sports and Entertainment.”

Well, that’s certainly convenient.  And I’m old enough to remember when Vegas and sports gambling were anathema to the folks running college sports.  Which is to say I’m at least seven years old.

Yeah. College football going the way of college basketball; just another excuse to get a bet down. I guess I shouldn’t mind it too much. In Great Britain they live with gambling everywhere.

Listened to a guy on PGA Radio talk about what’s ahead for gambling on golf. Says they are working on allowing bets be placed on virtually anything going on “in tournament “. Made/missed puts, distance of drives, clear a hazard, etc. All on the your convenient device. Looks like cfb may have a similar future.

Par for the course, and Stokan and his Peach Bowl/pre-season kickoff classics successes have paved the way (Vegas loves streets of gold!). We should have seen this coming frankly. I’m sure the SoFi folks are getting beat to the punch here. Plus SEC fanbases love coming west for a game and bringing in that sweet tourist juice.

I’m pretty excited about this land grabbing development actually. Especially if our Dawgs get into one of these games. Barking down the strip on Labor Day weekend and sounds good to me. I’d love to play Washington or USC (since we already have UCLA & Oregon on the current schedule.)

*and yes, LMAO @ NCAA/CFB ironic hypocrisy of mouthing the platitudes of protecting the kids from the dangers of gambling

Most importantly, the stadium has a roof and is climate-controlled. Vegas in September is brutal. I’m in.

The “Vegas is bad for sports because of gambling” myth is dead, thankfully. As of 2020, 18 states had legal sports wagering and that didn’t include North Carolina (and any others that have come online since early 2020). Vegas should absolutely host a kickoff game. Several states have kickoff/neutral field games that also have legalized sports wagering (Colorado, North Carolina, Illinois, and New Jersey immediately come to mind).

Coke, smack and gambling. I’m sure glad I didn’t get strung out on any of those three.
