Now, I’m as big a fan of gallows humor as there is, so let me say for starters that I approve this message. But can you imagine the reaction Richt would have gotten if he’d have cracked wise about scooters, alleys or withholding middle names from Athens’ finest? Half the Red and Black‘s staff would have had a fainting spell.

You have hit the motherload, senator, that no one talks about. While being 70 miles from the recruiting hotbed that Atlanta is has been a plus, the attention and scrutiny we get from the paper in a city that big is a major minus and distraction. When someone in birmingham or Columbia writes a negative story about bama/saban or USC jr/spurrier, they call it a controversy…we call it a Tuesday.

Gallows humor, eh. I call it miserable discipline with a nervous laugh. Since when has any coach, even Spurrier concerning Garcia, made light of two students getting windshields broken after their QB threw beer bottles hard enough to stick one in the windshield and later retaliating on the student who stood up to that kind of hooliganism?
My God! That’s “OK”? We laugh at an SEC coach who makes light of that shit? What’s the moral difference between that and keying a car? Part of me gets livid at a coward who does the crime and slinks away leaving his responsibility to anyone in the crowd who is brave enough to report him and make him take responsibility. Then to retaliate toward that person in the same slimy cowardly way…….
“Gallows humor” is hardly the description of any coach who will not address this straight on. I’ll venture to say that in his last year of coaching the Vols, SOD is pulling out every stop to preserve his job at the benefit of the school and team’s reputation. This incident is hard to look at due to it’s cowardly nature, much less laugh at it as a coach’s sense of levity..

I do understand the humor, mainly because it doesn’t personally effect us.
BUT …if I were his Dad,….or his coach for crying out loud, I couldn’t find any humor in the situation. Gallows or any other kind. I certainly wouldn’t be joking to the press about it . But as Vito Corleone said, “I’m old fashioned, you’re the new modern generation. What do I know”
