“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
I don’t know much about Kelly as a leader and defensive thinker but Jimbo isn’t dumb so I am sure he is qualified for the job. With that said, I think hiring from within in this case is probably the best decision. The team, and staff, were rocked pretty good by Pruitt’s unexpected departure so maintaining familiar faces would help stabilize the ship for current, and future, players. Had he lost 2-3 more coaches from the defense, and brought in a new DC to lead them, it would have looked more like a dumpster fire than a “lone wolf” move by Pruitt. The only question is why it took so long if Kelly is that good of a candidate.

The only conceivable reason it took this long, is that Jimbo had to make sure that Coach Kelly wasn’t working for Los Zetas.
I’m not saying Coach Kelly was a capo in the notorious Mexican mafia organization made up of former special ops soldiers, I’m just saying it’s reasonable to assume that this is the reason it took so long for Jimbo to offer Kelly.

You may be right, he only had one year to be close to him and I doubt he spent much of it looking at him as an immediate, battle field promotion guy. One thing for certain, he had to satisfy the natives because their passions were stirred up with Pruitt’s departure. While all coaches keep a short list of candidates, Jimbo may not have had time to update his since hiring Pruitt 13 months ago. Unless there were obvious shortcomings, this seems a good hire given the circumstances.

Not sure that Pruitt was that tight with Kelly having only been together for 1 season. Sunseri maybe and if he had come to UGA he would have made for a good whipping boy if things don’t go well. Sunseri needs a few years before SEC fans forget Tennessee.

Sal learned that Tennessee “wasn’t as fun as I thought it would be.” It was like trying to tackle Herschel while being distracted by hose drills, Germans and orange pants.

Had to expect this would happen. Sunseri was the key. Would think Pruitt and Richt would have already moving been away from anyone on the FSU staff prior to this announcement. FSU is a good place to live and to coach. FSU will take care of its coachs. Pruitt wanted back into SEC. That is his venue.

So you’re saying there’s a chance….

I never wanted Kelly anyway. He doesn’t impress me personally, and seven years at Tech doesn’t do it either. He might be a fine coach, but not a fit for us here, IMO.
Sunseri would have been fine. But we’ll see how things go.
