I intended to post a full-blown Observations post for you at this point, but between my home Internet crashing last night and me heading out the door to Augusta this morning, I’m a little pressed for time.
There’s one thing I’d thought I’d share with you to get the ball rolling this morning, though. Yesterday was the third G-Day game I watched when a Richt team ushered in a major change at one of the coordinator positions (I don’t count the transition from Richt to Bobo as one of those). And what was unusual about yesterday was how utterly ordinary it seemed compared to the other two occasions.
Grantham’s first spring was noteworthy because he wasn’t Willie Martinez, of course, but there was also excitement at G-Day because you could tell the defensive players were buying into what he was pitching. Last year, there was the shock of seeing how bare the secondary’s cabinet really was and wondering if Jeremy Pruitt really knew what he was in for.
This year, though, was… well, almost boring in that regard. I mean, there’s a certain amount of drama in the quarterback contest and there isn’t much depth at wide receiver with the injuries and all, but really, when you got down to it, the day boiled down to Georgia’s offense being Georgia’s offense.
The weirdest part of that for me is that feeling didn’t really sink in until the game was almost over. Whether that’s good or bad depends, I guess, on how much you blame Bobo.
Anyway, that’s just a start. I’ll have a lengthier G-Day post to share with you after I get back from the Masters.
G-Day on Saturday. Masters on Sunday. Are you flying your Lear Jet up to Nova Scotia to see the total eclipse of the sun?

Yep, no contest. But rather than even have that silly argument, it shouldn’t be a debate. Why juxtapose the too when they are within 2 hours of each other? Lots of other empty weekends in the spring. McGarity is not the only one to blame but he has the stripes to make this call. We have endured this lack of consideration for too long.

I watched parts of three spring games yesterday. It may have been a little boring, but we looked way more organized and crisp than the other two teams…Florida and Ole Miss.
A few thoughts…Nick Chubb is pretty good. I am scared breathless about the kicking game, and nothing happened yesterday to make me feel any better, yeah I know, new holder and all that.
I’m in no position to argue with Pruitt about big bodies on the defensive line, but I hope South Carolina, Bama and Tennessee don’t make me miss Geathers.
One of the bad things about revolving quarterbacks is the difficulty establishing communications between three very different quarterbacks and the receiver corps. We have along way to go. I hope more than one of the incoming freshman receivers are ready to play pretty quickly. Scott-Wesley does not look ready for prime time, to me.
I see a wealth of talent on defense, an interesting mixture of old faces and new. The conventional wisdom is the Jeremy Pruitt kicked defensive recruiting up a notch or three, I bow to conventional wisdom.

Everything should be viewed through the SEC. I was surprised how good the Qb’s did at Florida, they brought some showtime to UF. The UF secondary is usually tough, so all the more surpising. And Spurrier said he was happy with the way his Qb’s played in his Spring game.
LikeLike
You have a keen eye for talent, sj3…I think that Chubb guy is going to contribute. I also share your concern for Scott-Wesley. He clearly pulled up short on one pass. Hopefully, he just did not want to get drilled for nothing as opposed to being chronically timid. He looked pretty damn good to me before getting hurt and we sure need him to return to form.

Agree. Pruitt doesn’t know how to stop the run. His defensive scheme gave up 400+ vs UF, and a whale of rush yards vs GT. It’s not body types though, it’s just scheme. He’s clueless, can’t even stop the 4th string RB.

Scorpio, were you referring to 2014? Because the Florida quarterbacks put on a clinic at their Spring game, or maybe you just don’t follow the sport like some of us fanatics do, Grier connected on 7 of 9, 77% of his passes, and Harris went 6 for 9, 67% like Bauta. None of their top 2 Qb’s were as inaccurate as UGA’s #1 starting Qb Ramsey who struggled to complete 55%. Scorpio is one uneducated football fan.

My favorite televised spring games moment was Steve Spurrier’s Celebration of Himself, Hosted by Himself at halftime in Columbia. Instead of going to the locker room with his players, he limped over to midfield, took the mike, and shouted out the names of some of his players from his self-proclaimed “Ten Years of excellence, 2005-2015,” as the sparse attendance applauded them. “Blake MItchell, my first Gamecock quarterback! Stephen Garcia, who played the game of his life against Alabama!” Connor Shaw, winnin’est Gamecock quarterback ever!” I guess the athletic department had forgotten to put together this celebration themselves, so Steve had to take it upon himself. We cannot, no, cannot let this guy enjoy another victory at our expense before he limps off to the final golf course.

A few thoughts about the 2015 GDay.
1- The defense continues to struggle, gave up 38 points, 480 passing yards, and a 100 yard rusher. They did force 2 turnovers and got after the Qb with what seemed like 10 sacks. Sadly, this was their best scrimmage.
2- The 2 WR injuries were about worst case scenario. now the Qb’s will be working with the 5-14 best WR’s. Bad for the defense facing such weak talent, and bad for the Qb’s and 1-4 best WR’s all missing invaluable reps.
3- I watched the Qb’s closer than any position. I even got out the play by play over at the UGA website. What did I learn? Play by play is here:
http://www.georgiadogs.com/sports/m-footbl/recaps/041214aab.html
a- Ramsey went 6 for 11 for 194 yards, Bauta 16 for 24 for 176 yards.
So Ramsey had a 17.6 yard average pass due to throwing exclusively long balls but only hit on 55%. Bauta’s was 7 yards a pass but he hit on 67%.
b- Ramsey didn’t complete 1 pass to a non WR. All 6 completions were to WR’s. He didn’t seem to know his progressions, seemed to lock onto a WR and chunk it long. Forgot about tight ends and RB’s.
c- Bauta hit 43% of his completions to WR’s, 43% to RB’s, and the other throws were to the TE’s. He seemed to know his progressions much better. Didn’t lock in on any one receiver position. This made him harder to defend for the defense, thus his much higher accuracy.
d- Bauta’s team won the game, had more drives that led to scores, and scored more points than Ramsey’s. But Ramsey didn’t play much in the 2nd half, only 2 passes.
So what do ya’ll think?

I thought:
Qbs are terrible
Front 7 looks good
DB’s are overmatched
Wynn snapping it over our tallest qb ain’t good
#6 looks like a player
Kickers looked awful
All in all I’d say “underwhelming” except for the olb position.
LikeLike
It was interesting looking at Qb. Last year, the offense set a scoring record with the run the ball + Qb game manager combination. Hutson ended up completing 67% of his passes for 7.8 yards a pass. He didn’t throw many int’s.
Bauta’s numbers looked eerily close to Hutson’s: 67% accurate, 7.3 yards per pass. Didn’t throw any int’s or bad balls.
Depends on what CMR is looking for. If he wants a Murray type that likes to sling it downfield, he’ll go with Brice. If he prefers a low risk high percentage guy who knows progressions, Bauta’s the easy choice.
LikeLike
I wouldn’t call the Qb’s terrible. Brice’s 17 yards per pass average would have have been No 1 in the country and Bauta’s 66.7% accuracy would have put him No 8 in the nation.
Front 7 couldn’t stop the No 4 string RB who got a 100+ yards and busted a 52 yarder. They didn’t stop Chubb, he averaged 11 yards a carry on his 3 carries
DB’s got clocked again for almost 500 yards passing. Not quite as bad as last year’s GDay embarrassment, but close.
Turman had the fumble. Sure do need top 3 in there: Chubb, Michel and Marshall. Douglas is a joke.
#6 was disruptive.
Kickers did look bad on that miss, was a short one, but a bad angle. I think the kicker is now 7 for 12 in the scrimmages. 58%. Yep, that’s terrible..

In 2014 GDay, the defense gave up 51 points and over 700 yards. We knew it was weak and it turned out to be true in the SC, GT, and UF games.
In 2014 GDay, Mason was 67% accurate. That was exactly where he ended up in 2014.
I don’t think the rush defense will be worse than last year where the defense finished 63rd in rush defense. Then again, they gave up 11 ypc vs Chubb and didn’t face No 2 and No 3 RB’s Michel & Marshall.
The 2014 GDay turned out to be accurate in gauging how the team would perform on defense and pass accuracy.
It’s as close to a game condition as it gets.

Originally, CMR thought that passing and a Pro Style pass heavy offense would win a Championship, and defense outside of the national top 10, would work, but it didn’t.
So, what’s the new plan since all the things CMR has tired since 2005 have failed to win a Championship?

Did AM beat a team with a winning record in his first 2 years at UGA?

And it never matters who the qb is as the years go by. They say that about all of them. They say that cursing and name calling is for people who are too stupid to know what words to use to make their point. it seems that bitching about the qb locking on to receivers and not “going through progressions” is the crutch of those who don’t know what they are talking about but want to sound like they do while they are complaining.

Glad you didn’t post any particulars. That gives you time to monitor the sob before he ruins your report blog. Note: comparing plays and players ain’t necessary. A realistic evaluation of a practice game can be parsed with a realistic evaluation of a publicly watched (and scouted) game. If anyone expected trick plays or a player used to try to impress the fans, that would be idiotic, don’t you think? We know the players and their capabilities so the “Meh.” news doesn’t need to be seriously discussed. Some of us were disturbed by a couple of good-to-great players not showing up mentally. The take on that resides with the coaching staff and I really would be interested in what they have to say about what we witnessed and what the true situation is or isn’t.
Giving a clue to what I saw: Park is still in the mix and no one QB lacks the talent or athleticism necessary to carry this team this season. They all have what we have been led to believe is that ability. And they will improve on that between now and Fall Kickoff.
