As Georgia’s new head coach prepares to leave Athens for Tuscaloosa in the next day or so, it’s worth remembering that, while recruiting enters the dead period for the next few weeks, dead doesn’t mean completely dead. It just means no face to face contact with recruits.
The dead period is the most restrictive. No in-person contact is allowed, even if a prospect makes a visit to the college campus. Written and electronic communications are still permitted.
And yet, prospects still do decide to commit to schools in late December and early January, often because they’ve considered all their options, taken all their visits, and are ready to pull the trigger.
Juggling act coming up, in other words. We’re about to find out how good Smart’s support structure at this early point is exactly.
Would love to see decisions for BMac and Tracy Rocker this week. Their respective positions are key needs in this recruiting class.

Aren’t we a little interested in Chris Rumph from UF?

Any ideas on why we wouldn’t keep BMac? Seems like he’s done a pretty good job, but he’s been left twisting in the wind for over a week now, so makes you wonder what’s up. I’m wondering if he’s driving a hard deal on salary or title. Or maybe Kirbs just isn’t enamored with his work or has some personal differences. Not sure. But agreed, would love resolution sooner than later.

WR as a position group didn’t exactly cover themselves in glory this season, though pinning that on his coaching alone is a big stretch.
He’s also been on staff longer than Brown or any of the defensive staff that might stick around, and maybe Smart just wants to clean out the older-guard.

Yeah I did wonder if, in watching film on us this year and also coaching Bama’s secondary, Kirby saw some weaknesses in the wide receiver coaching that he feels can be improved upon. I felt like the biggest weakness with that unit is/was talent. Outside of Mitchell and Godwin, there isn’t a lot of it. Not sure who that is on.

There was a reason BMac was switched to receivers last year. We put our best recruiter into a position of need. I would be glad to see BMac stay with us and continue with the recruits we have in process.
Coach Chaney will have a say here, too.

He could be planning on bringing Napier over.

McClendon was a very solid RB coach, and the best RB recruiter in cfb. Unfortunately, he doesn’t seem to have the same oomph as WR coach. Personally, I’d have let Brown walk and put Bmac back at RB coach.

Is this where we get the patented Nick Saban Soviet Spy brush pass contacts?

If Captain Willard can do it, so can Kirby

Dead period?

Some have already said this, but I kind of buy into the idea that the best thing Kirby could do for recruiting over the next four weeks would be to help Bama win a fourth National Championship sporting one of his defenses.

Defense recruits interested in UGA will benefit better watching Bama play these last games.

The sooner Bama loses, the sooner we get Kirby full time. I couldn’t care less about Bama and what they do other than how it impacts us.

I’ll be watching Kirby on the sidelines to see if he does any txting while sheepishly glancing toward Nick… 😉
