Time to play in the shadow of Touchdown Jesus

At least I can give you a game day post.

Looking at the game today, I certainly don’t dismiss Notre Dame’s chances.  There’s plenty of talent and the advanced stats love the Irish.  Add in homefield advantage, and it’s not unreasonable for the line to favor the home team.

That being said, I have to admit, whether out of sheer homerism or (I hope) sober analysis, that I like Georgia’s chances tonight.  I know their offensive line is a team strength, but I still think Notre Dame is going to have real trouble with the Dawgs’ defensive front seven.  I also find, weirdly enough, that the rapid improvement of the kicking game I witnessed last week makes me feel a lot more confident.

Sure, the game probably comes down to how well Jim Chaney manages his offensive line and his rookie quarterback.  Nick Chubb and Sony Michel can make him look a lot smarter if he works their play right.  We’ll see.

Finally, the intangibles.  How a young Georgia team — particularly Mr. Fromm — responds to adversity on the road is a good question.  But Brian Kelly is under a lot of pressure and those coordinators have exactly one game under their belts.  How Notre Dame handles adversity could be an even more interesting matter.

Add your game day thoughts and observations in the comments.  Hopefully, I’ll see you on the other side of a win.

how well Jim Chaney manages his offensive line and…particularly Mr. Fromm — responds to adversity on the road is a good question.”

I posted this previously, but it fits here as well…

I can’t imagine what Fromm is feeling. He will need the support around him for sure. Also, I wonder just how scaled-down Chaney will go on offense, not because Fromm doesn’t know it but to give Fromm high percentage plays. I expect some caution to start with to give him time to settle. Success in the running game early will be huge. Also, sure hands from the WRs. No dropped balls. Fromm will need that help early on for confidence in the passing game.
Let’s hope the addition of Kindley and Baker at the OG positions to start gives the OL a boost. Obviously, early protection is key as well to get the O going.
I’m guessing our star position player will be the spy on Wimbush. We will need to keep him contained and force him to be us with his arm. Trent, Ledbetter and company will have to beat a good OL to slow their run game. Our plan will be similar to theirs. Stop the ground game and force their QB to succeed passing.

I expect a close, 4 quarter game that could go either way. Think UGA wins because of sheer talent but it wouldn’t be a shock if the close one goes to the home team. Notre Dame has some talent as well and they have had this game circled to make a statement after a disastrous 4-8 season last year. Lot of pride, so need I say, we will get their best shot. Our players are young and cocky, they won’t be intimidated.

Tough environment for Fromm to have his first start but I think the key is how well our defense limits a running QB. The improved kicking game also gives me more confidence that we pull this one out. Could well be a field position contest that gets decided by a FG. If one of the teams blow it open, I feel that would more likely be UGA. May have to throw the run open to be successful, don’t want to face a loaded box all game. We have top players who want to show a big audience they deserve big money next draft from the NFL so a motivated, healthy Chubb/Michel on offense and Carter/Bellamy/Thompson on defense would go a long way to getting UGA across the finish line first. Which younger offensive play maker makes a big name for himself: Mecole, Nauta, Swift, Ridley, Crumpton? Lot of studs ready to shine. Go Dawgs!!

So this is our game day thread.
I hope it’s happy and full of enthralling comments
I hope Jake Fromm becomes an instant legend.
I hope Notre Dame is 0-2 against UGA tomorrow.
    Also,
Praying for all in peril from Irma too..kind of puts things in perspective.

I’m feeling like mr macallan. Look, we all can judge for ourselves how mature and character driven the first team starters are on both sides of the ball. Aside from Fromm being level headed just imagine the support his teammates must be sending his way. If it were me, I’d lay down my full effort for Chubb and Sony, no doubt. I look for a couple WR guys to help Fromm out as well. And then there’s the defense. Those young men are going to give it all they’ve got to help our young qb. I just hope Kirby and the staff have harnessed the “team” aspect and also are smart enough to have a solid game plan. Time for the staff to show results. Period. We’ve spent a decade tucking tail and being “aw shucks” for big games. Win tonight and get ready for conference war.

Seems logical to me, we will have to make them respect the pass early to give our RBs a chance to take control. If we run that damn dive to Chubb on the 1st play we will know Kirby hasn’t given Chaney the message he needs to have sent by now. Hit ’em where they ain’t hasn’t sunk in for old Jim yet.

Give an offensive coordinator one of the best RB combinations in the history of college football… and he decides to primarily throw out of the shotgun with a freshman QB on the road.
It f’ing amazes me how a multi-million dollar business can put so much power into the hands of idiots.
And I’m just tired of seeing it.
These are halftime views. I hope we win. And I’ll be excited if we do. But my 1st half observations won’t change. We need a better plan on offense.

Georgia has the better team. We might not win it, but you get the feeling that ND is just holding on (and holding). Refs may steal it.
O’ line has improved..no doubt. ST’s are really special…Defense is almost shut-down level..RS is something else.
OC needs to step up his game..need a reverse..too vanilla on the wild dog.
Fromm needs to limit mistakes, but has played well for a freshman..two awful mistakes, though..any mistake is awful in a game this close.
    Refs can bite my ass.

This is horrible. What a freakin’ joke of an officiating crew. Alabama couldn’t beat ND with this crew officiating. We’ve probably committed most of the fouls we’ve been called for but ND can hold, tackle, commit pass interference and the refs “just missed it”… And Fromm has regressed and looks like what he is..a freshman. Still, we’re in the game.

The pass rush was absolutely fearsome the whole game, and it’s fitting that they ended the game the way they did. Great to get a win and bring it home.

But we are nothing like a championship team yet. Our o-line can’t get us two yards when we need it, our receivers have difficulty getting open downfield, and our current QB – while a gifted leader – has serious problems with accuracy, which is the most important skill required by his position.

I still feel good about what happened tonight. Damn it’s Good! To be! A Georgia Bulldog!
