Observations from the armchair, Anchor Down edition

I’ll get to the bullet points in a minute, but do you know what first blew me away watching the broadcast?  How clearly and how loudly the Georgia fan contingent and band came through.  If I didn’t know any better, I’d have sworn they were playing the game in Athens.  When ESPN did start panning shots of the crowd, I wasn’t surprised in the least at the amount of red dominating the stands.

Between Nashville and South Bend, our fans have really shown out this season.  That’s something I imagine will be in the back of some heads come bowl time.

Anyway, on to the aforementioned bullet points.

  • Any discussion of the game has to begin with the dominant performance of the offensive line.  The difference was due to the interior of the line showing up with its best effort since Sam Pittman’s arrival.  That was Gaillard’s best game by far; he was a real factor in run blocking all day.  Kindley’s already shown himself to be good in that department — it really sucked to see him go out again — but Kendall Baker played quite well on the left side.  Wynn has had a great year, so that may not have been a surprise, but Andrew Thomas kicked some serious ass as well.  His pulling effort that led to Sony Michel converting a first-and-fifteen is as athletic an effort as you’ll see out of an offensive lineman.
  • It’s a pleasure to watch Fromm grow ever more comfortable running the offense.  There were maybe — maybe — a couple of passes that were off, but I can’t recall a throw that made me cringe, even though it’s clear he’s still not expected to read defenses much after the snap.  He does a great job getting the offense lined up and ready before the snap.  The touchdown throw to Godwin was his best pass of the season.  And, again, Eason’s health allows the risk to be taken for him to keep the ball on the read option occasionally, to great result (plus, it keeps defenses more honest).
  • That being said, coming up short misreading the yard marker, getting some ass chewed by Kirby on the sideline during the time out and then converting the third down on the read option is easily my favorite two-play sequence of 2017.  I’ll bet you money Fromm doesn’t make that mistake again.
  • I’m ready for the Mecole Hardman patented drop a catchable pass moment to go away.
  • For those of you wondering what Georgia is doing better in the red zone this season, watch the Swift touchdown catch.  It’s set up by a nifty route Nauta ran to free up the back.
  • How enjoyable is it to see Chubb’s and Michel’s decisions to return justified?  And how great a season will D’Andre Swift have next year?
  • Speaking of Sony, that was an impressive balancing act he put on to score on that long TD run.
  • It was great to see Holyfield’s first career touchdown.
  • Let’s go ahead and get this out of the way right now:  Roquan Smith.
  • I do think the missing defensive players were a factor in Georgia’s early issues on defense.  Webb’s long run of the day came because Juwan Taylor didn’t hold his position.  But Taylor settled down as the game went on and played quite well in the second half.
  • Georgia’s depth at linebacker is ridiculous.  It seems like every game I see D’Andre Walker make a great play and wonder why he’s not out on the field more.  Then I remember why he’s not out on the field more.
  • I know playing soft coverage is the strategy to take when you’re up by 21 and there are less than two minutes to go in the first half, but if you aren’t getting a pass rush, a decent quarterback like Shurmur can make you pay.  He did, too.
  • Though it was easy to forgive that, given how lights out the defense was in the third quarter.  I also loved the fight the defense showed in trying keep Vandy out of the end zone after Eason’s fumble.
  • Special teams weren’t perfect, but they were certainly good enough.  I wonder if I’m starting to get spoiled, because I’m disappointed when Blankenship doesn’t generate a touchback.
  • I will say this, though.  Hardman may still be a work in progress as a receiver, but as a punt returner, he’s hell on wheels.
  • I grow more impressed with Tucker’s tactical skills from week to week.  On one play, he showed blitz by overloading the right side of Vanderbilt’s line; as the play went away from the pressure, he dropped Atkins (!) into coverage, right into the line the pass took.  The end result was that Atkins tipped the pass away, forcing a punt.  Just a beautifully designed call.  Tucker also did well juggling personnel in the wake of missing three key players.
  • As far as how Jim Chaney’s day went, I’ll take 400+ rushing yards and a quarterback who wound up with another 200+ passer rating and a couple of key runs himself without complaint.  Chaney’s mixing sets and formations and the offense has been coached well enough that it’s been handled close to flawlessly.  Even the Wildcat has been effective.  Add to that the way Fromm’s been managed and it’s hard to criticize the job he’s done (not that it’ll stop some people).
  • You can add Sam Pittman to the list of coaches who are getting it done.  As nice as it’s been to see the improvement this season, to think where things may be headed is kind of exciting.
  • Whatever Kirby said at halftime worked.
  • If there’s ever a Tommy Tuberville drinking game, “going NASCAR” will have to be a key component.  It takes a lot for me to sympathize with Mike Patrick, but Tubs got me close.  It’s not that he’s ignorant; he has enough insight from coaching that every once in a while he manages to offer an observation of value.  Unfortunately, he’s also lazy and comes across as lacking any interest in being in the booth.  If I’m lucky, he won’t be calling any more of Georgia’s games this year.

This marks three straight weeks of Smart’s team doing what a team should do facing inferior conference opposition.  Vanderbilt, moreover, offered a nice measuring stick for Georgia, given that the Commodores played Alabama, Florida and the Dawgs three straight weeks.  Those results pretty much confirmed a pecking order that we have in mind for Georgia right now:  not at Alabama’s level, but better than Florida’s.

There’s one point worth consideration, though.  ‘Bama is ‘Bama.  It’s already occupying a lofty plateau.  Georgia is improving.  The team may not be ready to look the Tide in the eye today, but who’s to say what things might be like by season’s end?

I know, I know.  Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.  Still, this season grows ever more fun to watch.  Come on down, Missouri.

  1. I saw what you saw from the arm chair as well. For those clamoring for the passing game, I’ll take 400+ yards of rushing all year long. It was the formula Alabama used to beat us in 2012. Let’s ride it for all it’s worth for the remainder of the season. If Jake Fromm State Farm is taking client calls in the 4th quarter every week rather than engineering a drive, we’re going to be all right.

Can’t argue with any of your bullet points even if I wanted to. That said, let’s talk about the band. It can’t be said often enough how good this group is. There are maybe only a couple of marching bands in this part of the country that are even close. And, the School of Music is a real treasure. You mentioned how easy it was to hear Georgia’s music during the broadcast but that’s been true for a long time. These are really talented kids and the audition to become a Redcoat is super competitive. I think we sometimes fail to recognize how much the Redcoats add to the atmosphere at games. And, their music doesn’t hurt your ears.

Grambling and LSU are far and away superior in the band department. LSU’s is probably the only band that I actually look forward to hearing when we play them. Redcoats are not on that level.

We sat in U just behind the band Saturday and I was super disappointed because we couldn’t hear them well as a result. Our 3rd down music is one of my favorite things about college football. I was pissed off when they played canned music over Kryptonite at the end of the 3rd quarter. Garbage move by them considering Vandy’s band and football players were the only people left wearing black and gold at that point.

I’m still sort of pinching myself that we’ve not had the obligatory “sleepwalk game” in the midst of these wins. Every ounce of my UGA genetically engineered fan brain expected us to lay an egg against UT after the emotional win over an overrated Miss St….and then we didn’t. Then comes Vandy, that we always have problems with…on the road…and we dominated. It’s creating serious cognitive dissonance, and I like it.

seriously, the defense got bailed out by the OL coming to play, but they were playing C+ football in the first half.

It is scary how much the floor for this team has moved up in the last few weeks.

” He doesn’t even know the players’ names most of the time”
Neither did Munson when he was talking about another team, and no one would say he wasn’t great. Plus, Tubs does some goofy things, but I have decided to call them “colorful”. Going NASCAR is an example. I am getting used to him. And in fairness to both him and Patrick there wasn’t too much to do but gush about UGA’s depth and athleticism, and Tubs making some suggestions to Derek Mason on how to help his defense some.

I watched the replay last night when I got back from Nashville and I found myself wondering about the “going NASCAR” thing. I’ve never heard anyone else use the term, so I know that it’s not a Georgia term. So why is he repeatedly using some term that his teams at Texas Tech used like it’s the actual terminology? And he didn’t even bother to learn how to pronounce Davin Bellamy’s name, and he’s one of the biggest stars we have on defense. He’s lazy.

At some point, Mecole is going to have a huge play at WR for us. At some point, he’s actually going to catch the ball and make a difference. At some point.

He has been consistently inconsistent, time for “next man up”. I realize his potential when he catches the ball in space, but he hasn’t. We have other speedsters, make the change, it is going to cost us if we don’t.

We lose hundreds of potential yards and scores waiting on one thrill that may never come. The first qualification for a receiver is good hands. Without that he can be standing in the endzone by himself every play for naught. I’d give him one more pass..first play against MO..and he’d live or die as a receiver on what he did with it.

I whole heartedly agree with your first sentence, but that last recommendation is not how I want decisions made about use of personnel. It is the whole body of work, including practice, which will give us the most consistence performance we need.

Tuberville on the football broadcasts is a lot like Bob Knight was on basketball–strategy observations all day, but a lot of “number” and “number” y and no actual research on the teams playing. I keep telling myself at least it’s not Musberger. (“this is the tight end of the future, folks!”)

My favorite D play of the game was a rather insignificant one, but one that shows just how well coached and disciplined we’ve become. I believe it was in the 3rd quarter, and it was a 3rd down play in which Vandy ultimately ran a screen pass. When the QB went back to throw, the Vandy OL released and let our DL come right on through towards the QB. However, all of our DL immediately realized, ‘hey, this is too easy’, and quickly understood what Vandy was attempting to do, so they dropped back. Sure enough, they were all sitting right there as the QB tried to throw the screen anyway, and the play ended up as an incomplete pass.

Much like the UT game last week, where UT was forced to call a TO on our 4th down punt (in which we rank our O back onto the field and caused them to panic), its the little things like this that make me smile.

    • That was an excellent play by the defense. Bellamy blew the whole play up by just stopping and floating over to the running back. Shurmur then threw the ball into the ground at their feet.

It appeared to be the play that burned us last year.

Yep, he just left them sitting there wondering what was going on. If I recall, there was nobody left to pay the dinner bill either, and the recruits never heard from him again. Also, Tubs once ran up the score on MSU/Jackie Sherrill while at AU. I remember AU being up by something like 30 points late in the game, yet he chose to run a fake field goal which let to yet another TD, with Tubs laughing about it the entire time.

Tuberville lacks any sort of “color” in his commentary and doesn’t research the teams he’s doing games for it seems like, but he does offer some pretty good insight on what’s going on from an x’s and o’s Standpoint. Blame ESPN and their obsession with hiring every former player and coach to fill all their broadcast roles.

Whatever happened to our jumbo formation with DT Rochester in the backfield? We seem to have abandoned the jumbo in favor of the wild dog. Perhaps Chaney can combine our jumbo formation with the wild dog to make it more effective on those short runs.

Just to clarify, I’m not suggesting we hike directly to somebody like Rochester – though I do like visualizing such a play (late in a game with a big lead). I’m contemplating a direct hike to Chubb, Michel, etc., and they follow Rochester as he blasts a massive opening through flattened defenders.

You forgot one of the great pieces of fluff journalism when the sideline announcer (I’m assuming he’s a Vandy alum) proudly told us about the Vandy tradition of “blowing the Admiral”. Mike Patrick’s response was classic, “Well, alrighty then.”

Excellent summary, Senator. The read option plays Fromm has run the last two games are definitely a result of Eason’s proven health, they have been available all season. Using that effectively is expanding the difficulty of opposing DC’s substantially and will open up cut back lanes for our RBs when he does hand it off. Great addition to our offense.

It wasn’t apparent on Friday in Nashville that we would show up like we did. It didn’t have the feel of Chicago for ND. But the tailgate was all UGA and the stadium was about 60% UGA. Very loud and definite help for the road team.

Great observations Senator and the only observation I would quibble with is the “Monday morning QBing ” aspect of Kirby yelling at Fromm for going out of bounds short of the first down. I think he did nothing worth getting upset over. The game was already decided (I can’t remember the score but we were way ahead) and if Jake takes a major season ending hit in order to get a rather meaningless first down we the Monday morning crowd would have been asking why the hell would he jeopardize his health by taking a hit to gain a meaningless 1st down? Early in the game you dive for the 1st down marker but why would you risk losing your starting QB when your up by 30. Jake has better situational awareness than his hyper-kinetic coach. Doesn’t mean that the 4th down read option run wasn’t brilliant and satisfying but I think Kirby over-reacted to what I thought was proper situational awareness .

    Like

    • Fromm didn’t need to dive. He took a poor angle.

I thought he saw the marker, saw the LB speeding over and made an intelligent decision to avoid a full speed head shot while up 35 points. Situational awareness may not be Process-like, but it’s not stupid, either. The really Machiavellian idea here is Kirby didn’t care that Fromm stepped out before getting drilled, but saw the dog and pony show on the sideline as a way to get everyone ELSE’s attention about not coasting. “oh hell, Coach is lighting up Jake and we’re up 35. I better not ease up at all.”

If he takes the “proper” angle he exposes himself to getting de-cleated half a step out of bounds. why risk it? Just watched….. 38-7 and #4 for Vandy a 240 lb linebacker is just waiting for him to turn up field and then he would get to do what defensive players live for…nail the qb. I would also point out that Kirby was close to 60 yards away from this play.

The icing on the cake is what a great move it was for them on a personal ($) level.
The doubts about Chubb’s complete restoration have vanished. And Sony is truly a great one!
Besides their running ability, how much is their experience and leadership worth?
I hope NP is paying attention..he needs to look at his commitment and compare it to these two outstanding young men and learn something of great value. Fortunate to be on a team on the rise..one that has the potential to make the CP., led by the the hardest working, determined and respected running backs imaginable , unpaid..when they could be playing on Sunday, and you go out and do a dumb and selfish thing that could cost everyone everything they’ve worked for.
