Oh, you Herschel Walker.

Back in the days when the weather wasn’t a factor travel time wasn’t a factor the Gator Bowl wasn’t in the state of Florida Herschel Walker roamed the college football world, life in Jacksonville was pretty boss.

Three wins.  Unhappy Charlie Pell is the best Charlie Pell.  When you’re talented and have the right mindset, good things happen.  Amazing how that works.

Gotta love the State Trooper in the second clip. Almost as good as the fist bump behind Spurrier.

Amen to that. I remember the few Florida fans left in the Gator Bowl chanting “Go pro, Herschel, go pro”. Unfortunetly, he did.

Also the best: We watched the Charlie Pell Show the day after Belue to Scott. His receiver Cris Collinsworth told him, “Other than the long Herschel run and the Lindsey Scott play, it was a Gator rout all the way, coach!” Other than the John Wilkes Booth thing, it was an awesome play.

And the truly amazing thing is that we win there without the best running back in CFB history.

Maybe we run a toss sweep with Chubb instead of running him countless times up our center’s ass. Did anyone else notice that Sony got all the outside handoffs/pitches against Mizzou?

I think the dew point was lower in Jacksonville back then. Had to be. Damn it would be nice to put a regular ass whuppin’ on those guys.

    • UF/UGA back then was about a week later on the schedule than it is now. Those clips were from 11/6-8. A bit further in the Fall than now.

Also, those games were played AFTER Daylight Savings time ended. Before 2007, DST ended the last Sunday in October. The 1980 game was a noon game and the 81, 82 games started later in the afternoon – possibly as late as 4 pm.

LOL, I see what you did there. Of course, it goes without saying that UF was a middling program back then with absolutely no history of success trying to find its way, and they had to resort to rampant cheating to be successful in the late 80’s. So its only natural that a much more successful program like UGA would prevail most years down there regardless of any inherent disadvantages.

So what you’re saying is that football really didn’t exist until 1990?

BTW, the ’85 game was my all-time favorite. Florida was ranked #1 and was a heavy favorite, yet Henderson and Worley ran wild all over them for the blowout win. The Gators had something like 400 yards passing but only managed 3 points.

If I recall, in the lead-up to the game someone from UF referred to Timmy & Keith as “rinky-dinky” backs. Needless to say they weren’t rinky-dinky that day.

Here’s the 1985 highlights. The run by Worley was amazing as he had a pretty fast DB chasing him and the guy never had a chance.

Jeez, 3rd, all you had to do was look it up. UF was #1 in ‘85 when we played them and later had a guy named a Emmitt Smith carrying the ball for some pretty good teams. They weren’t yet championship material, but they were in the conference mix every year (except for the probation years).

    • Florida was a shitshow that couldn’t stop getting caught cheating back the. Probably had something to do with it.

I have stayed downtown numerous times, on Amelia Island many times too, I don’t understand this sentiment.

Yeah, it’s as good or bad as you want to make it. When I was a broke student, I stayed in some real dumps. When I had more disposable income, suddenly the places were much nicer. It’s like that in pretty much any city.

Anywhere to watch these old 1980 games? These are some of the first clips I’ve seen of Hershel catching passes out of the backfield. Didn’t realized they used him so much like that.

Herschel had over 750 yard against Florida in just three games against one of the fiercest defenses in college football at the time featuring the likes of Wilbur Marshall. If ADGM won’t commission a statue of #34 in Athens, maybe the Bulldog Club of Jacksonville will put one outside the stadium-The Gator Bowl.

As long as we’re building statues in Jax, let’s get one of Jarvis Jones, too. After the GOAT gets his, of course.

Herschel AVERAGED more yards against Florida than Bo Jackson gained in his entire career against Florida. Feel free to use that to shut up the next AU fan who wants to tell you “Bo was better than Herschel.” 3 SEC titles in 3 tries, never. lost. an. SEC. game. Won an NC, played for another one, and was a stupid blitz against Dan Marino from coming in second in the country the year Clemson won. Played with a separated shoulder. Played with a broken wrist. Took the ball 25, 30, 35 times a game, every week. Bo was as fragile as a China doll. It’s a shame HW went to the USFL, because the NFL got to see really good HW, not peak HW.

Has there ever been anyone who jumps over the pile like Herschel? It seems like he was maybe eight or nine feet in the air. I know he wasn’t. But damn, he just soared over the top.

Still amazed by him. 3rd & 2 or less were guaranteed first downs. He would get so high and go so far on those dives, no one could stop him. Linebackers knew what he was going to do, and they couldn’t get high enough to stop him.

I liked listening to the late Lindsey Nelson. He was a classic with those loud sports jackets.

  13. I wonder how good Herschel could be in 21st Century offense that throws passes to backs more than we did from 80 to 82. Herschel has tremendous ability to catch the ball out of the backfield. Even though he didn’t have the same kind of jaw-dropping make you miss kind of moves of other backs, his speed and power is world-class. He was matchup problem back then. He would be a match up nightmare now. Amazing talent – so lucky we got to see him.

Back in the day when the schedule was in our favor….. Georgia’s 81, 82, and 83 opponents the week before Florida; South Carolina, Temple, and Memphis. Florida’s opponent the week before the 81, 82, and 83 Georgia game, Auburn each year. Aw, the good ole days before Florida figured out how to schedule the week before Jacksonville.
