SOD is back, folks.
Derek Dooley is Missouri’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, which is interesting because Dooley has never been an offensive coordinator or a quarterbacks coach before.
“Interesting” would be one way of putting it.
“I call it Wikipedia. That’s what it is right now, our offense,” Dooley told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “Every day you can go on there and there’s a new sentence (and say), ‘Oh, I wonder who added that?”
In addition to Dooley, much of the Missouri offensive staff is also new. Offensive line coach Brad Davis was hired from Florida and wide receivers coach A.J. Ofodile was promoted from director of recruiting operations.
“The idea is I don’t want to just cram some system down them,” Dooley said. “Everything they do is brand new. We want to build on some things they did well here. We want to add some things to help us have a little flexibility in how we attack defenses.”
This is gonna be a fun watch. I mean, what could go wrong?
Get The Picture 
Other than a last name and a fairly impressive resume in terms of where he’s been and who he’s learned under, I don’t know what Derek brings to the table here. He’s not known as a lights out recruiter or an offensive guru. The only thing I can think is helping is that Odom probably doesn’t think Derek’s a threat to take his job.

Great stretch for the Dooley family you mean, Mac. Precious got $12 million out of the toothless nation and totally f*cked up their program–it still hasn’t recovered. That part was good for Georgia. So Babs made a fool out of herself. Small price to pay for financial security for her little baby.

Does he begin by dumping a big yellow tiger statue into the bottom of the pool after hauling it around in a hand-truck for 12 weeks? If Sgt Carter hadn’t been hired at ‘Bama, he could have been a great grad adviser on symbolic attitude props. What a pair to have benefitted Tenn’s ongoing attitude for the next 10 yrs, now to be shared throughout the SEC.

Booch might not have been a bad OC hire for Mizzou. Why in the world did Odom think SOD would be a good hire for either role as OC or QB coach?
Unless Lock received a poor draft grade, why in the world did he decide to stick around to be at the center of what is appearing to be a dumpster fire?

Well, he already eschewed the NFL for perhaps the reason Parrish mentions below, but this is probably a downward twist for Lock. I talked to a Mizzou alum last week who thinks they will have a good team and thought no one else had even included them in the SEC conversation. He was surprised that Georgia fans viewed them as stronger than FU, but happy that Mizzou fans would see a great year from Lock.

I’m in the camp with Spike and Derek. I was still working a real job when SOD was in his heyday in the land of orange, so I don’t have a good handle on how big a doofus he truly is. I must say, based on snippets like that one and the general esteem in which he is held here at GTP, I think the odds of Mizzou being the Cinderella team of the SEC anytime soon just got longer.

Trust me hes one of a kind. But I don’t think for a minute hes stupid. He graduated from Virginia and played ball there and graduated from Georgia law. So he is one up on the pirate who never played football and never practiced law.

I’m curious if he’s sharing with them proper hygiene methods as he did during his UT days, when he blasted them for the team’s body odor and such.
One of my favorite SOD stories was during his last year at UT, when he clearly was on the hot seat. After practice was over, he’d notice the media waiting to interview him in front of the door to the facility, so he’d immediately start jogging laps around the practice field, hoping that they would get tired of waiting and would leave. Instead, most would simply wait until Derek himself got tired, and eventually he would stop jogging and yell at them to find something better to do with their time.
The smart UT guys literally knew from his very first PC that he would be a disaster of a coach. There was a quote about one admin saying to another during his first PC introducing him as HC something like, “uh, there’s no way this is going to work, is it?”…and the other guy simply shook his head from side to side.

So how, exactly, is going to practice and discovering someone has added something to the offense coordinating the offense? Might work if you’re coaching a sand lot team on a Saturday in the old neighborhood. If I were a Missouri fan, I’d be really worried right now.

This year’s draft class is pretty loaded, so I get why Lock came back. But I suspect he can’t be super thrilled that he went from Heupel to Dooley, but only time will tell, I suppose.

Heupel is an offensive football genius who will be the next great HC. SOD is a failed HC/defensive coach trying to pretend to be an offensive/QB coach. Lock is going to be sorry he returned.

Not sure about Heupel as a genius. I actually think UCF is gonna find it very hard to replicate what Frost was able to do. Lock is such an interesting QB. His splits against winning teams vs losing teams are worrisome, but that dude can SLANG it. His arm is fantastic and his deep ball is beautiful.
I agree on being skeptical of Dooley. It was such a strange hire.

Maybe Missouri is like the corporate world, where an Offensive Coordinator would report to an Offensive Manager, who would then report to an Offensive Director, all serving under the Chief Offensive Officer. If that’s the case, then SOD is in a good spot as Coordinator.
