“And Georgia fans, don’t be turds. Enjoy this. Soak it up. It’s awesome. If you don’t win this year, it’s still not a failure. It’s a heck of a run. Back-to-back in the Playoff era hasn’t been done. So, to ask for a third I feel like it’s gluttonous. I feel like it’s not OK. But we’ll be in the mix.”-- David Pollack, On3.com, 5/9/23

Yeah, the top defense’s what?

Yeah, it’s not like he writes or publishes for a living. Give him a break.

Just hard to imagine a team with an offense ranked 109 by S&P even making a game of it.
But yeah, at a casual glance, they look a lot like LSU, with a better D and a better RB.

We all are entitled to their opinion. I do not think this team looks remotely close to LSU. Weaker at the QB position. One dimensional offense. I think we’ll run well enough and absolutley kill them with the pass. Georgia wins this game.

Kentucky could beat LSU on a neutral field.

LSU barely scraped past Auburn and got beat by Florida. They aren’t as good as we made them look.

I agree. Alabama is going to expose them on Saturday.

LSU/Auburn and LSU/Florida are both rival games.
Does any team even consider Kentucky a rival?

Tennessee-Kentucky is a pretty bitter rivalry actually.

Gotten more so in the last few years when UK started winning, too.

Probably Louisville is their rivalry, if that meets a definition of a football rivalry (and I think it does for them). They are instate schools from different conferences and similar in prestige so often competitive in football. The basketball teams are more intense rivals. Being a “technical rivalry” in football doesn’t mean it is intense, or relevant to anyone besides their own fanbases. That is what GT has become to all but some UGA fans and GT fans, the game rarely has any significance or interest outside of the twoo schools, and is why it is a weak noon option for 90% of the country. There are years where it becomes interesting for some outside the fanbase, but the series isn’t close and we rarely compete for HS recruits.

Louisville? At least in basketball.

I was only thinking in terms of SEC teams, but you’re right of course. Louisville and Kentucky absolutely hate each other. Football, basektball, whatever, doesn’t matter.

There was even a scene in Justified that featured UK – Louisville smack talk

University of Cincinnati and Kentucky loathe each other, but that’s more historic and obviously related to basketball. Not sure the last time they met on the football field.

The question to ask in evaluating how Kentucky’s defense compares with ours is how di Kentucky’s cornerbacks compare with LSU’s excellent corners. Our receivers were not getting open, giving LSU’s pass rush time to put pressure on Fromm
LikeLike
Yeah, looking back on it, it’s kind of dumb how so many failed to recognize that the LSU secondary was going to control that game. They were good and it wasn’t surprising when it was happening.

LSU does have good DB’s but Fromm also missed some open receivers either with a poor pass or missing that they were open. Georgia has opportunities in the passing game.

Iowa State is the only team capable of playing good defense in the Big 12.
Don’t be surprised if they win it.

Gotten more so in the last few years when UK started winning, too.Iowa State will likely win the rest of its games and finish 7-2 in conference so they have a chance but I think some other teams have a better record now and also have the tie-breaker on the Cyclones.

OU and TCU have the tiebreaker on ISU plus ISU still has to play Texas.

I’ve settled into an acceptance stage, if our guys get beat by a team that plays better than us, so be it. Maybe I’m just tired of trying to guess who’s going to play better. They have great LB and CB players. Looks like a good matchup and time for Chaney to sweat some more. Our D certainly knows what they’re going to have to deal with. Does Chaney get it done?

……..so you’re saying it gets annoying when talking heads like me declare, 9 games into a 12 game season, that “we’re gonna find out who [x] is.” #conventionalwisdom

Looking at their schedule I don’t see any teams that aren’t finesse type offenses. They haven’t played anybody looking to play smash mouth football.
As much as it might be tempting to try and open it up, get a lead and try to force the ball out of Snells hands, I think we should just throw haymakers and know that by the middle of the 3rd or so, they’re gonna crack and they can’t make us pay on the scoreboard.
War of attrition I say.
Next week will be the time to go “bombs away” on a weak secondary.

In the main yes. Lots of qb in shotgun, misdirection, lots of screens. They spend a lot of time with eye candy and using the width of the field.
Power offenses are qb under center, downhill, vertical offenses. Make you bring up a safety to help in run support and attack the one on one match ups outside. Not trying to fool you, but beat you when you know where we’re going.

Just keep in mind that you can be physical and finesse and that everybody is adopting and incorporating some finesse concepts, of all types, into their offense.
Bill Walsh was great at being both finesse and physical. Same with Urban Meyer.
What I’m suggesting is that there are a few teams: UGA, Alabama, LSU among them who are comfortable playing small ball, between the tackles, power football.
If you’re in the shotgun on every down, power ball is just not your identity. Doesn’t mean they aren’t trying to be physical.
Some good rules of thumb for the differences are:
are you under center?
do you run between the tackles vs. 8 man fronts?
do you pull guards and tackles on passing plays?
If no, no, yes are the answers you’re probably a finesse offense.
Its not an indictment at all but teams that are successful defending finesse offenses aren’t always that great defending power offenses and vice versa. The disparity between Pruitt’s defense vs. Auburn and UF in 2014 is a great example.
He shut down one team that wanted to go east and west. The north/south team on the other hand? Not so much.
Good Pruitt: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400548337
Bad Pruitt: http://www.espn.com/college-football/game?gameId=400548348
Two weeks apart.
And its not just coaches. A lot of it is what kind of guys do you have? Are they speedy, disciplined guys or big, immovable objects who fill their gaps?
Because of their roster, Alabama has historically been better at stuffing power teams no matter who the QB is and uneven with finesse teams with really good QB’s.
All I’m suggesting is that our OL punching them in the mouth may be a similar reality check than what ND faced when they played Bama a few years ago.

Just curious, Senator. No snark intended either way, but what about Derek’s analysis do you disagree with?

I’m only nervous because we watched the offense lay an egg against LSU and until the 2nd half of the UF game wasn’t doing much.
This game is on the road, UK’s offense isn’t very good, but they can run the ball.
Hopefully the offense is able to get points early, because our weaknesses play into their strengths.

If they holf us that far under our average, and we (using the same table from Mr. Steele) hold them the number under their average. We will out gain them by 100 yards. I’ll probably take that.

Either Georgia will play well and win fairly easily, or they won’t and maybe lose in the fourth quarter. It’s basically the Florida game again, and I’m not any more worried about losing it than I was that game.
