Been there, done that.

Damn, these painful championship losses to Alabama are getting old.

On the bright side, it gives CBS even more material to work into next year’s SECCG broadcast.

Somebody needs to either work hard on fake designs or Kirby needs to quit calling them ever. That fake punt was just fucking awful. Maybe they lose anyway, but that virtually assured it.

  5. The fake punt was an abortion. Worse was the abominable run heavy offense in the 2nd half. (though to be honest I’m way over the hill now, so the UGa strategy might have been legitimate)

I can’t understand all the UGA PAIN!!!

Outside of the possession off the goal line, they didn’t run that much in the second half.

One: I think Kirby and Co. need to make it clear to Fields that he is the backup QB. He sits in reserve unless needed due to a blowout or injury. No more subbing in for one play here or there. Fromm can hand the ball off just as good as Fields can. We are wasting snaps with Fields in the game. Fromm was red friggin hot and we pull him. Crazy…

Two: The possession before the half and the fake punt were borderline criminal coaching calls. As much as the staff makes, they should be fined for such boneheadedness stupidity.

We choked this one guys. No two ways about it.

What were they supposed to do before the half off the five? The fake punt was awful, but I didn’t have a problem with the way the rest of the game was coached.

They called a pass that Fromm missed when they could have run the clock out. I think they were hoping to hit a big play with Alabama not paying attention, but the check down to Swift was an easy, normally safe throw that Fromm almost airmailed for an interception.

After the Bama roughing the kicker penalty from the 19 with 54 seconds and 3 timeouts, we ran Swift up the gut and didn’t immediately call time out. What the mother fucking fuck? Richt was never that fucking stupid, even though Kirby has the same pussy instinct that seems to define The Georgia Way. Fromm can run the damn 2 minute drill as good as Aaron Murray. What would Saban have done there? The Master with his killer instinct would have AT LEAST tried to get 3 going into the locker room, knowing your opponent is getting the ball at the half.

We then passed on 2nd down with 13 seconds left. WTF? Pass on 1st down or just stay conservative and run out the clock. Fucking schizophrenic. Nick called timeout with 8 seconds left thinking he could tie up the game. You want to beat his ass you fight fire with fire. You don’t defeat his ass with Christian kindness.

You mean like Nick Saban did for Bama last year after the loss to Auburn in the Iron Bowl and like he did a few years before that in 2011 after they lost to LSU in the SEC CG?

I don’t remember Kirby blaming the players for the loss in his press conference. He pretty much came out and said it was on him and the coaches unless you are referring to his comments on the fake punt call.

        Like

        • Definitely referring to the fake punt. He blamed the snapper for not snapping it quick enough. I blame him for not calling timeout when he saw Bama in punt safe completely covering the possibility that the play would work. Coaching malpractice at its finest. Kirbs should have accepted responsibility for it straight out in the presser- and chose not to.

I would have taken a 7 point loss before the game, but seeing our guys play their asses off only to be f..ked by their coaches dumb decision makes me scream. My wife went to bed early to be able to avoid me. I have no defense for that decision. None. If we punt and put them back on the 20, the worst that happens is overtime. Fromm played his ass off and so did Swift. The defense played well for 90% of the game, but we gave them a short field with the game tied and the back up QB in the game. No excuse, it was the wrong call and it screwed the team who deserved better. We won’t be in the playoffs now and I hope Kirby learns something from this.

Kirby said postgame that the fake didn’t work because we didn’t snap the ball early enough, that a Bama defender ran over to cover whoever was supposed to get the pass from Fields. That being said, when you see the other team line up to punt, and the only guy in the backfield with the punter is your backup QB, who the hell doesn’t figure out that a fake is being called? Hell, I saw that as soon as I saw Fields, and I was opening my (next) beer during the play

Not snapping the ball soon enough made no diff on the fake punt. 4th and 11 w 5+ minutes left is no time to try and run the ball up the gut against a good defense. Kirby needs to own this one. I hope that he will be able to do so. Besides, if you were going to fake i, do it with Swift, who is an actual running back, rather than your back up QB who is a good athlete but not an elite runner.

There was a play where the UGA linemen pushed the pile on a run (can’t remember if it was Swift or Holyfield) and gained an extra 7 yards from where the rb was initially stopped. That is the kind of thing Alabama usually does. That made me convinced we were going to win. Fuck them for giving me hope.

We had them for a while, but their overall depth and talent took over. Surprised? No. Shit, no one gave us a chance but we went the distance with maybe the best college team since Nebraska in ’93. We held Tua to under 100 yards in the 1st half. Who would have put money on that? Kirby has it going on but goddamn, Nick has built a monster of historic proportions over there. What has me shaking my head right now is that we played quite possibly the worst percentage with that fake and gave them field position. A defensive minded head coach would never do that. We needed to make them earn it and we didn’t.

First, the refs, the side judge in particular, fucked us.

The PI was bullshit and the no call on the out of bounds hit was ridiculous.

Second, when we get the ball with over 5 to play, the correct strategy was to be aggressive. They’re worried about us eating the clock and that should give us the opportunity to take shots. If not, we punt them deep and play against their second qb.

Instead we kill three minutes off the clock and give them the ball at midfield with 2 to play.

You’re doing a lot of shit right Kirby but your decision making needs some work.

He’s got balls. We needs some brains.

I hear you, Derek, but it doesn’t take any brains to realize a fake punt in that situation isn’t a risk worth taking. To defend your decision after the game, to define recklessness as aggressiveness–“I wanted to be aggressive. Look, I wasn’t coming here to play to tie, to play to keep it close. We came here to win the game”–adds insult to injury. Bad Kirby. Bad!

As for the refs, side judge, etc. Kirby needs to learn how to challenge a spot. He seems adept enough at hanging on to time outs, so he should have one to burn to stop the cheating on the spots. If he’d do it a time or two and win the challenge, the refs would be embarrassed into honesty.

Florida and the other East guys have been way down. Things happen: See 1992, the Donnan years with ALL that talent, 2003, 2012, ETC. We were in control and our coaching staff choked. Even worse I saw the single worst play call in my 45 years of watching and living Georgia football. Would we have won……..Maybe not, but we had a rare chance. We look stacked and loaded, but I remember how stacked we were with Goff, Donnan and Richt. We never got SEC or Natty with the first 2 and no natty with Richt. You can’t squander opportunity. You never know what might happen with Kirby, the schedule, Florida, Bama. What else do you need to know?

Don’t patronize me on perspective Buddy. If you think these players put that behind them, you didn’t hear Ledbetter, Walker, Gaillard and others talk about coming back to erase memories. Do you really think Kirby forgot about last year or will forget about 4th and dumb. We have a great future, but the fact is this looks like 1991-1992, 2002-2003, 2012. I’m not interested in participation ribbons and the last 3 guys lost their jobs because basically that was all they got, even though Richt won 2 SECC and won the east several more. Until we get to the top of the mountain all we will be is runners up, recruiting champions, bowl winners/losers. The talent is there with a continuing weak East so now is the time to WIN, not participate.

Wasn’t meaning to be patronizing. If that came across that way, I apologize, but my perspective comment was made not as a measuring stick to see which one of us is a better human being. I just had a recent tragedy close to my home with some friends that were affected; so, even though the loss sucked and stung, it just didn’t seem that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things.

And your response? For someone who claims to be a Christian, instead of offering some words of encouragement, you chose instead to whip out your dick and want to get in a pissing contest as to who the better human being is based on “works.” You may be a good person. I don’t know haven’t met you and don’t know you personally, but that is the exact type of behavior, that resulted in me to stop attending Church a long time ago.

I really don’t understand your angst at my comment nor why you are taking it personally. This is the exact reason I don’t post on social media or message boards all that much. If you cannot treat people as you would face to face when you sit behind a keyboard, then why post anything. I hope you and yours have a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.

As I reflect on my response, I first must say that, indeed, you must be a fine person considering your willingness to drop everything and go to help someone in need. I’m sure your friends are thankful for such a kind gesture.
Since you initiated the perspective comment I felt compelled to give a perspective response , since you didn’t know me. I did so to let you know that fact by some of the things that I do and have done. Ephesians 2:8-9 make it very clear that works are not a competition or an opportunity to boast. I try to keep that set of verses in perspective. I can NEVER do enough when there is so much need in our world. I go to church because I am a sinner and because it is a place for sinners not because of others. God will judge me and it is not for me to judge others or to dismiss church because of others. I’ll leave God to be judge for others.
I am very passionate about sports. I competed in high school and college and still compete today. My kids have as well. They play these games not to just participate but to have champions and losers, otherwise they wouldn’t keep score. Now, there are no “life” losers participating in such a great venue, but there are game losers and winners. I have been closely watching Georgia since 1973 and was in school when we finally climbed the Natty mountain. At this point in life I have seen several SEC championships but only 1 Natty. When a real opportunity arises to climb that mountain I’m not interested in just participating, I’m interested in “summiting”. The last 4 coaches have been ultimately terminated for not summiting. It’s life; it’s the truth. I think this guy will do it again for us, but I am not interested in JUST playing the game. Ultimately he will be judged by the Athletic Board by the same standard as those before.
God bless you and make your trip to help those in need a special and safe one. Have a good day.

Thanks Aladawg. And I do apologize if I came off as pretentious or defensive. That was not my intent. I appreciate your passion, and we are probably just both very passionate people when it comes to Georgia football that was butting heads after an emotional game and loss. I can be an argumentative jack hat at times.

Think you are just a little older than me. I’ll turn the big 60 next year and started watching and being a fan of the Dawgs a few years after you did.

I appreciate your note and I apologize as well because I am intense. I turned 62 this year; spent 8 years at UGA getting 2 degrees which allowed me to see Herschel as a student. The talent is in place to win one of these and I truly believe we will be in a position to win one. I can’t bring myself to say we will because it has been too many times that what happened Saturday has happened.
I truly am amazed that your friends have a friend like you to jump at helping them in a tough time. Be safe on your travels to Alaska and God Bless their healing and recovery. Sincerely Robert W. .

  46. Georgia mixed up things well in the first half, but Alabama adjusted. Eventually it came down to who had the better defense and I think that’s Alabama right now. Their pressure got to Fromm and we couldn’t move the ball after the missed FG.

All the signs that it wasn’t our night were there. They fumbled into our end zone and recovered. We miss a chip shot FG. When Tua got hurt I chuckled to myself “oh, this is how we blow it this time.” Smart has made this team much better, but UGA always finds a way to lose this kind of game. I think we’ll be fine, but the narrative is gonna be UGA always loses when it matters until we finally break through. Twice we had Bama beaten and every conceivable thing went wrong for us to lose the game.

When you add in the Falcons and Braves problems finishing you can understand why sports fans in Georgia have become pretty used to this sort of thing. I know I am.

Late night, gutted feeling, a little perspective and a long ass post:

Alabama is the best program in the history of college football. This current decade long dynasty they have going comes at the most competitive era in college football. They are lead by the best coach to ever coach the game who recruits the best players in the country every year. This particular Alabama team is the best college football team ever to step foot on the field. They play in the better division of the hardest, most talented, and most supported conference in the country and won every contest by 20+ points and only trailed for 70 seconds all year until today. A feat not seen since some Yale team over 100 years ago. And considering all that, as a 14 point favorite, they got punched in the mouth repeatedly by the University of Georgia Bulldogs and needed some legendary 2nd string QB storybook shit to come from way behind to win for the SECOND YEAR IN A ROW. A UGA team that spent the entire year failing to play to it’s potential.

Despite all that, we are pissed because we all know UGA should have beat those SOBs twice now and we have every right to be because UGA was again the better team on a neutral field.

Was the fake punt dumb? Hell yes but before we crucify the best coach UGA has ever had let’s consider a few things:
Could Alabama still beat UGA if Comarda punts it and forces them to drive the length of the field? Odds are better at 50 yards than 85, but even though you prepared for(and dominated) their water walking Heisman front runner and unprecedented throwing QB you’d have to pull a man in to spy the running backup qb, the 2016 offensive player of the year (24-2 record as a starter), leaving the game to young DBs against talented WRs for possibly another long late TD pass (see: 2012 and 2017).

If the do fail to score does UGA win in OT? Maybe but with the momentum plus the way their D was playing in the fourth and their O was moving late I wouldn’t want to trade 25 yard line chances to decide it.

Again, we all will remember it as a dumbass call and another painful chapter in the history of UGA football but I can appreciate the “came to win” mentality even if it proved reckless.

I’m hate moral victories but as a Dawg fan I’ve learned to specialize in them but this wasn’t Aaron Murray and a rare assemblage of talent’s missed shot at the king like in 2012. Kirby Smart and his staff (including Jim Cheney) have propelled UGA football to a status reserved for the sport’s few true juggernauts with no sign of weakening and everyone knows it. We should be pissed and deflated right now but if we are going to wallow in despair for the missed opportunity we have to be equally hopeful for the seized opportunities to come.

Georgia finds new ways to reward its fans with brilliant highs and gut wrenching lows every year. One day, probably soon, UGA will finally break through and it will all be worth it. I imagine if you were to ask the generations of hard core Red Sox fans about growing up watching the hated Yankees win again and again and having high expectations of each year being “the year” only for each one to end in a new soul crushing defeat about the hope and loyalty-pains prior to 2004, it no doubt made beating the Yankees in route to that first world title and the ones since that much sweeter.

    Go Dawgs.

You are the jackass. He is the one who is right. You’ve always been the one who had to attempt to ridicule using your foul mouth when someone disagrees with you. The basis for his argument is right until the coaching staff stops doing stupid stuff to undo the great job they did for 58 minutes. The game is for 60 minutes and I’m too old for a purple participation ribbon. Until miltiple SEC’s and a Natty happen this is just the same old game with the same old soccer Mom leading. Wait til next year will be my cry again. Live in Alabama and you’d understand. Be like Illinois and you are happy to keep Lovie as your coach.

Kirby = Mark Richt redux. Where CMR lost me was the bonehead calls at or near the end of the game that turned a win into a loss. Kirby has become an end of game fuckup machine in big games.

Take a breather, Sally. We just capped off our best two back-to-back seasons perhaps ever.

I know you probably felt emo as you wrote that, but this is nothing like Richt’s program. This was supposed to be a rebuilding season with a young team after our best season since in almost 40 years.

This loss sucked, but this is nothing like Richt’s program. Dry your eyes and come up with a better analogy.

I’m just as upset that Georgia lost such a hard-fought SEC CG game against Bama as the next Dawg fan but some of the negativity is just way over the top.

The fake punt didn’t lose the game. Georgia had a chance to stop them on defense but didn’t. They then had a chance to tie the game up and send it to OT on offenses in the final 2 minutes but weren’t able to.

The fact is it was a heck of a football game between two of the best teams in the country and unfortunately for the Dawgs, the Tide made a few more plays than they did. Period.

And this meme that Kirby Smart won’t ever take Georgia to a Nat’l Championship promised land is old and tired. He’s in his 3rd year as head coach for goodness sake. Yes. He makes some mistakes. He’s a young head coach. A little perspective, Saban was in his 10th year as a head coach before he won a Natty at LSU in his 4th year with the Tigers. Saban didn’t win his 2nd Natty until he had been coaching for 14 years and was in his 3rd year at Bama. Kirby has already gotten the Dawgs to the big dance in just his 2nd year and had a chance again in his 3rd year.

If y’all would just be patient and let the man do his job, he’ll get UGA there and win. If he doesn’t in 2019 or 2020, then you can have something to complain about.

  49. Have we forgotten seasons of Mark Richt teams annually shitting the bed against a bad team, and getting obliterated by a good team, guaranteeing at least 2 regular season losses and usually not even winning the East?

Are we forgetting having about 4 good offensive lineman each year?

    My god people.

We have a BEAST of a head coach. He has only been a head coach for 3 years. We played for a national title in his 2nd year as a head coach.

Nick Saban won his first title his ** 10th YEAR as a HEAD COACH!!! **

Urban Meyer won his first title his ** 6th YEAR as a Head Coach! **

Was the fake punt a bad call? Maybe. Then again, if we convert it we win the game.

That coach is why we have the amazing players we have right now.

That coach is why we have a team that is not afraid of anyone.

That coach is why our players fight and play with incredible toughness and physicality.

Am I bummed? HELL YES I AM!!!!!!!!!!

Am I fucking sick of losing to goddamn Alabama??? YES! OMGBBQ YES!

But we clearly have an incredible coach who has this program on the right track.

Our program is on the rise. Alabama has nowhere else to go. Eventually even Saban will start to look old and players won’t want to play for him, or won’t want to feel like they added nothing to a program on autopilot.

Meanwhile our program is improving. We have a YOUNG coach. Athens is a million times better place to live than Alabama.

It sucks. I know. But do not despair and don’t give up on our awesome coach.

  50. Guys, we need to get better on the DL. That’s really it. Bama is never, ever, ever going to get called for holding when the game is in doubt. The only way to beat them is to get better on the DL and get home anyway.

Bama is never going to get called for anything when the game is in doubt. And they’re never going to quit.

Points can’t be left untaken; offenses cannot stop moving the ball and putting points on the board, etc. It’s not enough to not make mistakes.

I wonder if our penchant this year for taking foot off the gas late in the game (Ga Tech, Auburn, etc) shows up in situations like this. If you’re going to beat inferior opponents all year, the only way to prepare for close games is to keep playing hard against the weaker teams. Right?

Seems like Alabama, with its huge margin of victory, would be the team having issues finishing the game. I don’t follow you logic about taking the foot off the pedal late in games.

Big time programs play big time games against other big time power houses. Shit happens. Do I feel like repeatedly beaten dog as an Atlanta sports fan? Shit yea. Could I see this one coming as Gary Danielson brought me down to earth as soon as he mentioned we usually start out strong and finish slow? Yup. Did I wonder how the poison was going to taste THIS time? Yup. Still tastes like poison..this time with a hint of ‘wonderful Alabama redemption story’ mixed with ‘again Kirby with the fake shit?’

For me the pain comes mostly from reliving the past in my mind and indulging in the ‘if thens and butts’. Being a Georgia fan has given me no choice but to put football in the correct perspective (and that is easier said than done thats for sure).

We got a young team and I look forward to beating the dog shit out of the east for the foreseeable future. Just keep choppin and we will get there. And I will actually admit I kinda look forward to our match up against Texas in the Sugar, because at least it ain’t Wisconsin in the Outback anymore.

What would vegas say in a matchup between UGA/Notre Dame or UGA/0U. If they want the top four teams the answer to that question should settle whether UGA should be in or not. That said, when you begin to break down the game, UGA doesn’t really want a rematch UGA played its best most of the game while they played poorly and still won. If both sides had converted its red zone misses into fg’s they would’ve won by 41-31. It is hard to overcome their 12th man…very subtle but those guys in stripes can turn a game.
