Okay, I’m not going to blow smoke up your ass, either. Alabama’s offense is good enough to be the difference maker today, and probably will be.
That being said, I stand by my earlier post that the Dawgs have more than a puncher’s chance. The path to winning is, admittedly, a little narrow. (Usual caveat about a turnover barrage applies, natch.) On offense, Georgia has to be able to run the ball, for two reasons: one, it’s how Chaney best sets up the passing game and, two, the more time Georgia can chew clock on offense, the less time there will be for Tua to have his hands on the ball.
On defense — and this has to be one of the weirdest things I’ve ever written on the blog — I think Smart and Tucker have to let ‘Bama beat them with the running game. I know, I know, but, again, running the ball eats clock and that allows Georgia to shorten the game. Also, Alabama is first in the conference in pass plays of 20+ yards. It’s seventh in run plays of 20+ yards. When you play bend but don’t break defense, go where the math leads you.
The thing is, I don’t know for sure if the Dawgs can do either, although I feel better about the former than the latter. My concern is that if Alabama is successful through the air and blazes out to an early lead, that’s going to put pressure on Chaney and the offense to match that, and I don’t see how Georgia wins by throwing a lot.
If you break down the oddsmakers and pundits on the spread, essentially Georgia has about a one in three chance of winning today. In line with that, I see three scenarios. The first is that Alabama’s offense steamrolls Georgia’s defense and the Tide cruises its way to a comfortable win. The second is a back and forth struggle with ‘Bama prevailing in in the end, kind of like last year. The third, of course, sees Georgia pull out the close win.
My head and heart have argued plenty about games this season, but on this one, they’re both in agreement. Dawgs cover, but ultimately fall a little short.
I won’t complain if I picked the wrong team to win, though. GATA, Dawgs.
Have at it in the comments. Try to control your early angst a little, though, okay? You don’t always know. Even when you think you do.
I hate to agree with you on this pick, but I do anyway

When they have the ball we need to take away what they prefer to do and make them be patient and run the ball. I think we can do that for almost the first half. We will need the offense to stay on the field though so the defense doesn’t get exhausted.

That last two minutes of the first half would have been excusable in Kirby’s first year. But not now, and especially not since we have first hand experience of losing to Bama after putting them on the ropes early.
Kirby’s management of the offense after the huge Bama penalty sucked all the life out of any momentum we felt. I can only imagine it was demoralizing to our offense that was clicking and in a groove.

It was so unnecessary and against the flow of the entire defensive game. TUA wasn’t reading the zone the entire night and we were getting pressure with 3-4 DLs but we gave him a huge lane there to throw it to the house. It seemed to me the biggest problem was that the OL was gassed from toward the end of the third quarter on. They played really well until then but I think the lack of depth from injuries finally caught up with them. It’s hard to do much on offense if the line can’t get off the ball consistently.
I don’t know if we would have won even without the fake punt debacle, but it sure stacked the deck against us. The call wasn’t good, but running it even when it was obvious Bama was ready for it was worse.

Yes, the game ended up sucking. Yes, the fake punt was horrid. Yes, Bama got all the lucky bounces and calls at the end. I get it.
BUT, if you are totally despondent right now and are either totally pissed or depressed, take a long, long hard look in the mirror and ask yourself: what exactly is wrong with my life that I’m totally wrapped up and affected by something (UGA football) that is totally out of my control and I have no input on?

I don’t believe I’ve seen anyone contemplating wrist-slitting or bridge bombing.
Some people are pissed about the game, let ’em be.
This is one of the things I hate about this blog is all of the high-minded “you shouldn’t be excited, happy, sad, mad, etc” commenters that have to swoop in and explain how other commenters should feel, should have felt, or shall feel in the future.

Just wondering if it’s Kirby who is so fond of the fake kicks. The one tonight was maybe the worst call in Georgia history, and that’s saying something. Situationally,, it was just insane.

The only solace I can take from that is that it took the other team 4 plays to go 50 yards. Do we really think they couldn’t have covered 80 in 6-7 plays by that point in the game?

More plays than four, but the point still stands. We weren’t stopping them at that point.

yes, they might’ve scored, but you force them to cover twice or three times as much yardage to get to field goal territory. And we know Hurts is not the 2 min QB that Tua is. Inexcusable. Kirby rolled the dice in a stupid way

Yep … if they drive the length of the field and beat us, you tip the cap to them. The fact that we halved the field for them made it so damn easy. Every possession needs to end with a kick.

Don’t know if the extra yardage to go would have made the difference, but I would have gambled that more distance would give Hurds more opportunity to revert to his mean.

Well.
Dawgs have a lot in common with UF and LSU.
Two losses.
Being close is an excuse.
2 loses means no CFP.
Lesson to learn is execute those plays and finish.
Otherwise Dawgs will never get past Bama, or even an A&M, or LSU.

When you win, guess what.
It answers all questions and comments.
Can not get by LSU or Bama. Both have better defense than our offense.
That situation will be there as long as Chaney is OC.

3 years and we can still not beat Bama!
Damn nothing changes for UGA.
Never have a major upset of a team.

Special teams continue to be an issue.
Why? Even Saban gave the tip with Hardman. No deep KO’s. Pin to side and make them field it.
Factor in too much for a team that can not score and or control the clock and scoreboard. Chaney?
Plus the current DC has never figured out how to stop Bama.
And he may not be capable of doing it.
Can not let a team bring in a QB and run a 16 play time consuming drive to cut it to one TD with time enough for them to win.
When your offense sits that long panic creeps in if they score and cut it close.
They did and Chaney once again had no answer.
3x’s in less than a decade we had them beat and they come back to own us.
Damn!

The Bama players were pointing at Fields before the fake. They had it perfectly defended. Why didn’t Kirby call time out and stop the play?

I nominate a new play for “fourth and dumb.”
