“Tell them we ain’t going nowhere, Adam.”

I wrote this after Georgia lost the national title game last January:

Late in Ball Four, Jim Bouton’s iconic book about his 1969 journey to remake himself as a knuckleball pitcher, Bouton finds himself traded from an expansion team that never was comfortable with his new pitch to a pennant contender that suddenly thrust him into a start.  Bouton went out and pitched ten innings, only to lose a heartbreaker as a result of a couple of fluke hits.

Alone, in the wee small hours of the morning, back in his hotel room after the loss, you might have expected Bouton to be crushed by the experience.  Instead, he felt nothing but joy and elation.  His belief in his course of action to remake his career was validated and that, for him, overcame any sadness over the immediate outcome.

I imagine that’s something of what Kirby Smart feels this morning.  Certainly I feel something of that.

Yeah, the way things ended last night stings.  But consider this:  in its last two games of the season, Georgia took the best offensive team in college football, fronted by the Heisman Trophy winner, to overtime, won, and then, a week later, took the best defensive team in college football to overtime and barely lost.  I can’t think of too many football programs that could have shown as well.  Certainly that’s not something I would have expected from this team before the season started.

Nothing’s changed.  In fact, if anything, I’m finding it easier to get over last Saturday’s loss than the one in January.  Why?  Allow me to outsource the answer.

It’s easy to gloss over in the wake of a second disappointing loss to ‘Bama, but damned if I don’t believe this program isn’t heading somewhere great, consistently great.  Georgia has played the best team in the country over the last decade to a virtual draw the last two times they’ve faced each other, when the stakes were enormous.  How many other schools in the country can make a similar claim?

I grant you the Dawgs spit the bit on both occasions, but I can’t shake the certainty I feel that there’s something substantial being built for the long haul.  Consider this:

The Bulldogs again went toe-to-toe with Alabama with a championship on the line yet. As it turns out, they were still step-for-step with the Tide.

Yet this time it came about leaning on a playing rotation which went heavy on freshmen and sophomores. Those two classes comprised 52 percent of the Bulldogs who saw the field in the SEC championship game.

There were two redshirt freshmen, 12 true freshmen, 11 true sophomores and three redshirt sophomores listed on the official participation report. That means the majority of the Bulldog team could see two more trips to the SEC championship game stage.

How many of you are takers right now that won’t happen?

Those two losses came less than a year apart from each other.  This is a program that came off a disappointing 8-5 season just a year before that.  Step back to consider what a compressed time frame in which we’re judging Smart’s progress.  Then consider how far it’s come in such a short time.

We’ve reached the point in a silly rush where much of the fan base is disappointed in a Sugar Bowl trip.  Does anyone remember how excited we were when the Dawgs went to the Sugar Bowl in 2002?

Maybe this is as good as it gets.  Maybe the commenter who opined the other day that the botched fake punt is proof there’s a ceiling on what Kirby can accomplish is right.  That’s not where my head is at, but I would ask one question of anyone who honestly feels that way.  Who’ve you got out there who can take Georgia to a higher level than it’s gone in 2018?

I agree 100%. The future is bright. We went toe to toe with Bama twice now, and neither time were we perceived to be in the same league with them going into the game. I think next year, we won’t even have to worry about fake field goals and such. Kirby is building a machine and I’m convinced we take Bama down and take over that role in CFB.

Yes. The time to manhandle them is on the horizon. I feel very comfortable saying that in the playoffs as constructed, when we get by Alabama, no one else in the country will have a chance.

    • Not as long as the Zebra’s are keeping them in it with phantom PI calls (on us obviously) and overturning calls that go in our favor. We may win finally, but it won’t be a blowout. Saban and the tide know that UGA is stepping up to the challenge. Part 3 will be a war.

Disappointing as the blown lead was, I think it’s important to keep in mind that this was the bridge year for Georgia, where a whole lot of young guys were going to be forced to play. To come within a few plays of winning the SEC title for the second straight year against what might be one of the best teams of the last 40 years is an amazing accomplishment if you pull back to take in the forest.

Exactly, BR. We were hoping to be there, but not really compete. Too young, too many injuries, going up against one of the best CFB teams I’ve ever seen.

Only 1, Clemson. Sure, they got smoked last year, but it was a huge rebuilding year and the only reason they were in the playoffs is because of down ACC.

One of the points that hit home with me trying to get over the loss is that Dabo took many licks during his first few years as a head coach, both on the field and off the field (trying to match wit with Steve Spurrier was never a good idea). He often looked silly, but has learned a lot and is now pretty well seasoned driving the boat for a powerhouse program. I can only hope (and have little doubt), that CKS will take a deep dive into each game, look at the mistakes, and ask his mentors to challenge him and listen to their opinion on how things may have been done differently. He knows more about football than the collection of readers on this blog, but hope that on the inside, he’s relentless seeking knowledge the same way he hits the recruiting trail.

    • A “down ACC,” huh? Sounds repetitive and redundant, doesn’t it?

My two cents on the SECCG: it feels like we are ahead of schedule, and with the overly aggressive fake punt, CKS was trying to get WAYYY ahead of schedule. I know I’m in the minority on any Dawg board in that I’m not smarter than every head coach we’ve ever had, but I kinda liked the call. Had the fake FG never happened against LSU, this call wouldn’t look as bad, in my opinion. I like gutsy calls from any coach, and yeah, when they don’t work, the coach looks stupid. Had the onside kick not worked for CNS against Clemson, he would have faced a ton of criticism. Don’t give me any bs about it being the right time to call that onside kick, either; CMR did it in similar situations and when it failed, our fanbase called him the biggest fool on earth. I like going against conventional football wisdom, but I will concede CKS has gone against said wisdom a time or two too many.

Really, Senator? In 2002, the second year of his tenure after an 8 win first season, CMR had the Dawgs #3 in the nation (just like the Dawgs were last season) and finished the season 13-1. The only reason Georgia didn’t get into the playoff that year was the BCS only took 2 teams. In 2003 the Dawgs under CMR won the East but lost to the west champ LSU (Coached by Nick Saban I might add). Were you as excited then as you are now? Pardon me if I attempt to throw a little reality in here but I don’t really see a whole lot of difference. Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

The biggest difference is recruiting. I never saw a CMR roster with the talent-level CKS is at. CKS is all about the LOS; and CMR never excelled in that area. This is the reason why I’m so excited about the future and where I think the Dawgs are going!! Look at our O-line and tell me when the Dawgs had talent like that. When he gets the D-line up to speed, dominance will ensue!!

Those losses are the hardest to take, IMO. I was prepared for us to be absolutely run out of the building this time; I had been prepared all season for our inexperience showing and losing more than once. But I find my expectations change quickly when we start dominating a team that has only been behind for 10 cumulative seconds all year or whatever it was…and then choking it away, yes, hard to see the big picture again. But the big picture is, indeed, that we’re going to be the alpha. Sooner, not later. And it’s rather nice to hear the national media focus on how we dominated them most of the game and what that means for the quality of this team vs. focusing on the choke job that lost it. And with important players out with injury, even! It’s still that young team we all knew was there. Looking forward to next year with great anticipation. And to kicking Texas’ asses in the Sugar Bowl. Let’s make a statement there.

Next 12 months is key. Reprise last year’s recruiting triumph, shred Notre Dame, and spend the rest of the year in the top 3. And then take that final step. Easy expectations, right? 🙂

Fall short of that, and the narrative shifts. That’s life under the sport’s biggest expectations spotlight. “Les had Saban’s number”. “Gus is Saban’s kryptonite.” “Urban’s the new king in town.” Remember those?

The fake punt was just 1 bad call. I’m hoping Kirby learns from it. Georgia is already at parity with Bama IMHO. The real problem is the refs, who either feel they have to protect Bama, the flagship program of the SEC, or have a grudge against the Dawgs, or both. The Dawgs outplayed Bama the last two times the teams played and the refs stole the game for Bama. All the nice words in the world don’t mean shit when you can’t get an honestly refereed game.

Blaming refs for a loss is loser talk and makes one sound like a South Carolina fan. The refs didn’t call a fake punt or not call a timeout when it was obvious Bama had sniffed it out. The refs didn’t miss the field goal to go up three scores, the refs didn’t waste four or five offensive plays by throwing Fields a bone and bringing him in to hand off up the middle.. Blaming the refs for a loss conveniently overlooks many missed opportunities and bad calls by Georgia. I’m sure a detailed review of every play would show some uncalled holding against Georgia and other calls or non calls that went Georgia’s way.

I’m disappointed with the loss but, as the Senator says, we went toe to toe with what has been called the best college team of all time in a year that was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Georgia. I have confidence in Kirby to make the program what I’ve wanted it to be for 35 years. If we see more goofy calls next season that cost us dearly, I may have to reevaluate my support. Until then, we are light years ahead of where we were three seasons ago and I think things are only going to get better.

Bullshit. The problem is not finishing in the big game. Officials miss calls in every single game. It’s time to focus on the things you control. The refs didn’t miss the chip shot field goal. The refs didn’t call a fake punt on 4th and 11 at midfield with the game in the line. The refs weren’t playing defense and letting a 14 point lead slip through their fingers. Until we control the controllable and quit placing blame on something else, we’ll continue to see similar results. The biggest responsibility lies with the coaches. If Kirby wants to eat, he needs to show ME. After 4 decades, I’m tired of waiting on next year. These chances don’t come as often as many of you believe. They’re rare in fact.

    1) As I’ve gotten older and have more and more personal concerns to address, it’s become easier for me to move on from the results of a bunch of 18- to 22-year-olds trying to kill each other.
    2) That said, Saturday stung like a mofo.
    3) In spite of that, I am entirely confident that the Dawgs will be playing for the SEC title and by extension a shot at the national title for the foreseeable future. The future is as bright as it’s been since the Goal Line Stalker suited up in Athens.
    4) As long as we’re consistently in the hunt, odds are we’re going to break through. That helps temper Saturday’s disappointment.

Really, Tronan? Did you watch the SECCG in 2012 and how the Dawgs outplayed Bama and should have won that game? Did you not think then that Georgia was back and would be winning the East for years to come and “by extension a shot at the national title for the foreseeable future” like I did, back then? How’d that work out? Football is football–there are no guarantees. You gotta win ’em while you can.

No, I felt like the 2012 SECCG was our best chance for a while and losing it was one of the worst sports moments of my life. I also didn’t think the Dawgs outplayed Bama in that game, but bucked up and fought them to (almost) a draw. I still think the 2012 Bama team would have beaten the 2012 UGA team seven times out of ten. Not that we weren’t good, but we lacked depth compared to them, were not recruiting as well, and were still having the once to twice a season bed shitting that typified the Richt era. You’re right, there are no guarantees, but I feel much more confident in the shape of the program now than I did six years ago. We’re on even footing with Bama now. We weren’t under Richt.

Aside: I grew up a Royals fan in the 70s. I know all about getting to the crest of the mountain and then getting kicked down it just before getting to the peak. But, they had a good organization, persevered, and finally won a world championship. And then didn’t return to the post-season for 30 years … but let’s not dwell on that.

I appreciate the positive thoughts, not too many folks out there doing that. Unless you are Herbstreit, he thinks we should have finished #3, still pushing it as of yesterday. To be honest, we finished better that I thought we would with the youth that is on the roster….also there were not too many that thought we would take Bama to the wire.

One decision did not cause us to lose this game, it never comes down to that…. we fought to the end, every game has been that way this year. I thought the game plan was about as good as you can get. The dawgs are not going anywhere.

Again, thanks for the positive thoughts, refreshing to read & all true.

    Saturday sucked because

    1) we were the better team and couldn’t finish them off. That’s not loser rationalization either. We outgained them in yardage AND won the turnover battle 2-0. We did what no other team could do all season in that not only were we hanging with the best team in the country frankly for 3 quarters we were physically mauling them. Tua had lit up every team he’d faced, Georgia knocked him out of the game after shutting him down.

    2) so many guys had absolutely monster performances that were for naught

My only concern is that chances to do something special cannot be assumed will keep presenting themselves. At some point they stop so you have to take advantage when given the chance. We’re in a good place as a program but eventually we’re going to have to get over that hump.

It’s interesting the Richt’s and Smart’s win totals are almost identical through their first 3 seasons heading the program. That said, I remember how we entered the 2004 season with such high expectations only to lay an egg against UT and Auburn.
That said, 2019 looks so much different than 2004. In my view, it’s both the offensive and defensive lines. I have been a Georgia fan for 40 years, and I have never seen the Dawgs as talented as they are on both scrimmage lines.
Right now, I feel it’s critical they play to the standard in the Sugar Bowl to set up next season.

Obviously disappointed about the loss, but not as much as last year’s NCG. I hate to be the guy ranting about the refs, but yet I am: #BamaPriviledge is real, but it was earned by them over time, like Jordan & the Bulls in the 90’s. MJ got the calls (or no-calls) because he was rightly assumed to be that good. Of course the Bama OL can protect Hurts without holding, or the DB can defend a late TD pass without PI. Blocked punt? Against Bama? Tyler Simmons MUST have been offsides! Bama gets the (no) calls because they’ve proven to be that good over a long period of time.

What gives me solace is that UGA is building up that same cred under Kirby. After the NCG last year I thought that we blew our one chance. But now, I take the long term view: Build – Reload – Build some more. Bama didn’t become Bama in a day. And so it goes for UGA. That plus a lot of Maker’s Mark keeps my cold cold heart warm at night…

UGA is stacked, for sure, and Kirby is the reason. That obviously bodes well for the future. However, he has coached in a period where UF and UT, the traditional threats to UGA in the East, have been down. That period seems to be coming to an end. Meaning, the road will get bumpier. How bumpy, will depend on many things. One of which is in-game coaching decisions.

Nobody that I would want, that’s for sure.

This was supposed to be a bridge year. That’s a damn high bridge, iyam, and it isn’t really over yet. I watched the game again last night, and it still amazes me how well we did. At the beginning when the bad punt coverage looked like a certain TD was in the offing for Bama, we sacked Tua and then intercepted him. Past versions – even talented past versions – would have let them score and then try to match. We took it to them, and to their credit, they kept chopping wood, and clawed back. Refs did us no real favors, but I won’t say they just gave it to Bama, either. The fumble recovery TD in the end zone seems to me to be a matter of rule interpretation than anything else. And that wasn’t the on field crew anyway; that was the conference replay office. Couple of times when Fromm had to run and slid I thought they shorted him a little on the spot, but that’s about it.

To me, we changed how we defended a little bit once Tua went out. I actually kind of thought we changed our defensive approach in ways that let Jalen succeed. But it was not a lack of effort, or a lack of talent. We haven’t always been able to say that.

Saban has proven to be one of the greatest coaches of all time. He’s recruited and developed several Heisman winners / contenders. When he hasn’t won a Natty, it’s typical gone to a team with a transformative player (and Heisman winner).

We’ve had absolutely incredible talent under Richt (who clearly no longer gets credit for anything he did well) and now Kirby, but either Saban begins to lose his shine and/or we’re going to need a Heisman worthy player. We need to do this before the playoffs expand, or else we’ll also have to negotiate the luck of the draw and drain a longer, tougher finish to the season will require.

If this is going to happen in the next couple of seasons, then Kirby needs to fully commit to our starting QB. Either Fromm is the pro style QB who needs an elite receiver to pair with, or Fields can be that transformative player many think he can be. I suppose Kirby & Chaney can find a role for Fields that compliments Jake, but what’s happened so far doesn’t seem to be that winning combination to put us over the top.

I consider it 50-50 that Alabama even would have gotten into field goal range from their 20, and given their kicking problems it was by no means a given they would have made a kick if they did.

The use of fields throughout the season and in the title game was disappointing, and many times took the offense out of rhythm. The way to use him is effectively in conjunction with Fromm is to require a different defensive package that could then be countered by a hurry up. His use this season was very unimaginative.

I agree fully. We don’t need to remake the offense to fit Fields, but we definitely should have a package or two for him that emphasized RPO and his wheels. This year, we just put him in as a younger Fromm, or as a wildcat QB. That’s it. I can’t believe he can’t run a specific package, and it should be something different enough that the defense has to specifically change for it. We didn’t do that.

Kudos on the Bouton reference. I don’t know if you are aware, but he is suffering from dementia now. He signed my hardback of Ball Four years ago with the inscription, “Dooley Womack?”

That was probably a joke. Bouton was traded for Womack and he famously said, “Womack must have been a throw-in. I’d hate to think I was traded straight-up for Dooley Womack.”

Yeah, it was. I asked him to sign it that way. It was also to “Dear Mark, a fellow social leper.” Dick Young, the NY sportswriter, had called Bouton that after Ball Four was released.

  31. I am about as pissed as I have ever been after a loss. Worse than NC because it’s like Groundbog Day. Screw anything related to Bama, the refs, and our continual bad in-game fortunes.

But, as others have said, Kirby has built a fucking machine. We will be in this every year just like Bama has been. Unless we get on trouble with the NCAA it’s a done deal. And, Kirby works too hard to let that happen.

After 2007 season, I hoped it was a sign of things to come. Then, 2008 happened and I was convinced we did not have a machine in place.

After 2012, I once again was wishful we would be back but was fairly certain we wouldn’t be anytime soon.

100% confident Kirby is an elite coach and will have is here for many years to come. This is just the beginning on our time.

2019 recruiting class is hugely important.

Not enough to do it once. To win titles we’re going to have to have top-ranked classes year after year. And for now, our recruiting results are at least going to have to equal to Alabama’s. Ideally they should be better than Bama’s.

Winning championships in football is HARD and requires exceptional effort. Obvious point, but I’m not sure UGA’s administrators understand it. Over the decades, they’ve preached the excuse that winning championships largely come to luck and fluke circumstances and that’s why Georgia’s been unable to get it done. Dooley hung on for decades preaching this philosophy. It took Saban and Belichick to prove how wrong that is.

No worries. This class is going to be a monster. May not quite be last years class but easily top 3 and possibly no 1. It is going to be close. Kirby can coach and he recruits even better. Also we should go ahead and start building the damn Sam Pittman statue now!

Our coaching was terrific in the first halves of the 2 bama games, then went to sleep after halftime. We couldn’t score and we couldn’t hold em. I’m not saying we should replace any coaches. But we need SOMEBODY on the team that can find a way to finish strong. Either that or get our own refs.

All 3 close games w Bama only 1 week to prepare. This year’s 2018 SEC Champ game was Oklahoma’s 2017 Offense w/ a Heisman QB, combined with toughest D in land, in Sabans prime vs our team who played 50% freshman & sophomores. We neutralized Tua and Williams. Hope Fromm stays 4 years

  35. The loss was made more difficult to me because of the way it happened. Had it been a back and forth game and we just came out on the short end I can deal with that. But to practically give it away in the 4th quarter like last time by playing not to lose rather than to win on offense means we made the same mistake twice. That is what is hard.

We’ll bring home another SEC title and National title soon. Unless Alabama stands in the way with Saban at the helm. Saban will retire undefeated against his former assistants.
