If Justin Fields does elect to transfer, others have already noted he will make the second five-star recruit to bail on Georgia after Jake Fromm became the starter.
There’s an even larger trend that Fields, should he leave, would become part of that’s worth noting.

Also shows how little it usually works out for them transferring. The kid is better off staying put and mastering the system most of the time. That’s the problem with the ranking system, these kids think they are gods. Fromm is better because he put his head down and works. Eason and Fields expected to coast into stardom.

I was going to say the same thing. Other than Patterson (ok at new school but not setting the world on fire) the rest of the bunch is very forgettable. Eason and Johnson, the jury is still out. The grass is not always greener on the other side. Where it looks greener, you may just find out that it is greener because of all the shit that is being fed.

Whether Eason works out or not, it was a smart move for him. Back in his home state and not behind someone younger than him on the depth chart. If he can’t win the starting job at Washington, then it was never meant to be…..if he can, he has a full 2 years to build his NFL resume with a pretty good head start in public perception (that he’s an NFL caliber QB).
I think the problem is every kid wants to be Matthew Stafford. That takes a little bit of luck as well, considering all your peers want to go to the same 8 or 10 schools as well. The narrative that needs to change is that there is not a damn thing wrong with taking 5 years instead of 3 to get to the league. If you wanna play at a big time school, you must accept that there is probably going to be ANOTHER big time star already there. It takes a stroke of luck (like a freak knee injury to the starter in game 1) to be “the guy” at a top school your entire college career.

Not sure why we’re recruiting duel threat QBs if we’re not going to adjust the offense to accommodate those skills. If Fromm is the model one would think we’d be recruiting QBs with similar skillsets. I fail to see the logic in this. It’s essentially inviting criticism from everyone who understands there’s a difference between duel threat and pocket passers.

Because DT QBs are saying they want to play in a pro style system … Fromm has beaten out all comers. First, Eason as the next Stafford with the NFL arm talent and the classic pocket passer … Now, Fields as the next Newton, Watson, Tebow, etc.
There is something about a guy who is immensely talented (Fromm was a 5-star himself with Davis Mills 2 years ago) and prepares to be great. Fromm isn’t a game manager. He can make every throw. He knows the system inside and out.

I’m sure he was … I thought the dumbest thing Dabo has done at Clemson was the fact he only gave Watson one meaningful series in that game in 2014. Watson is a pocket passer who uses his mobility when he needed to. You could tell he was going to be special that night in Athens.

I guess I should’ve mentioned Plumlee, because that was my point. Maybe Plumlee will be great as a pocket passer, but he doesn’t come close to fitting the nfl QB mold. He’s even further from a pocket passer than Fields.
And yes, I understand Fields wanted to better prepare for the nfl. I don’t believe the offense he ran in HS was pro-style, and he had considerable trouble reading defenses this season. As a pocket passer, he’s a project to say the least. Him thinking he belongs on the field immediately is a real stretch – IF he’s going to run a pro-style offense. Am I going out on a limb when I speculate that just about every school that would make him a starter immediately would want him to be an RPO QB?

It’s not the transfer that is hacking a lot of people off, it’s the timing, 2 days before national signing day, and on the first day of the “dead period” meaning the coaches can’t call the recruits and do damage control.

Thanks, I saw some clarification on that earlier this morning. That’s a lot of what people were hacked off about last night. I think folks are still hacked off because of the timing, right or wrong, that’s a big element in the reaction. It’s not like our fanbase didn’t go through this last year, it’s just that it was handled a lot differently last year.

It is good for both parties to communicate the decision now.
Given Fields’ undergraduate status and the number of games played, I do not see him playing next season if he transfers, provided he does not go the JC route. But the timing gives Fields more choices on where he will be playing in 2020.
Georgia also has time to adjust its blueshirt and scholarship decisions for the 2019 class.

Reading between the lines, Fields wants his name out there in the database already and Kirby wanted to wait as long as possible for his own reasons (like, recruiting). So Fields’s people took matters into their own hands?
I get the sense Fields’s frustration is more with the way he was used, not his status as back up. Bill C was tweeting about this yesterday. Just a really odd way to use him. Fake punt was year in a microcosm for him.

We have a game to play the season isn’t over or we haven’t decided. However, Wolken is posting as if it is a done deal that Fields is transferring.

Kid is a true freshman and he looked like one a lot of the time when he was on the field. This was never gonna work out unless Fromm went down. We build up these incoming freshman as if they are all day 1 starters. Fromm is that rare kid that could play the position and know the offense from the first game of his true freshman year. They are looking at an EE committed to Texas A&M from Lanier. Down to 1 scholarship QB is pretty scary.

I’m personally okay with Fields going. Not for dislike, but he does need to do what is best for himself and his family.
Where I have an issue (and this is not confirmed) but from what I’m reading he would possibly try and attempt to use Sasser’s dumb racial slur as portraying UGA as a hostile environment, and secure a waiver to play immediately on those grounds. Which is hardly the case. We addressed the Sasser issue immediately. Look, if you’re unhappy at our school, say so. But don’t use something that was addressed and handled (I think within 24 hours of being reported to UGAAA) as your “fake” reason for leaving.
Again, I don’t fault Justin for wanting to play somewhere. He’s extremely gifted, and I would have enjoyed watching him play for us.

I support the NCAA change on grad transfers, it is what is best for he players.I am not disagreeing with you here, however this really becomes a slippery slope for the NCAA if they approve the waiver. I honestly think the NCAA will grant the waiver for the exact reasons you stated. if they do grant the waiver what is to stop a player in the future that is planning on transferring from using the same argument…warranted or not. If they approve it the genie is out of the bottle and there truly is free agency in college football.
Unfortunately i think the lawyer leaked (me speculating) this to Wolken. It occurred at the worst time possible for the team with regards to recruiting momentum. Regardless of who leaked it for some of the UGA fan base Fields will be persona non grata which is a shame. Perhaps Kirby can take advantage of the situation on the recruiting trail with a new QB, perhaps not.
I really wish Fields would stay and develop but unless they redshirt him in 2019 I don’t see that happening and I can’t really blame him. Fromm has shown he has the football IQ and won’t be overtaken without a fight. Good luck to Justin I hope he goes on to have a chance somewhere else and succeeds.

What I do appreciate is the fact that Fields absolutely thought he would take over as the starter and Fromm held him off. From what we saw during the year, no matter how Fields was used, Fromm is clearly the better QB at this point. It can be appreciated that Fields worked his ass off to beat Fromm out, but in the end, lacking pocket presence, pulling the ball down after your first read, etc just aint going to cut it.

Didn’t Fields at one point allude to as much? …something about, “still learning the reads” or something. If he is not comfortable in this offense, in which he has played significant time, he shouldn’t expect to pick up the next offense too quickly at a new school. Stay put learn the offense and make the best of your chances. He will have his full year at the helm soon and if he is worth his weight, he will earn his chance in the NFL. My .02.

If he is really good at a new school, then he will leave after his third season anyway, perhaps after one season if he has to sit out.
However, I sense that Fields will get playing time somewhere and make a lot of mistakes before the light comes on reading defenses, if it even does. It took Stafford a season and a half as a starter to get his sea legs, and he was the Number 1 pick in the draft. There is not that learning curve at UGA right now.
The drama is not worth it. Recruit a 4 star QB who wants to be here and knows his role. You can win championships with a very good 4 star QB who does not think his career will be a disappointment if he’s not in the NFL in 3.

It took Stafford 2/3 of a season. Aubs his Freshman year is when the light came on. He dominated from that point on.

Didn’t dominate against South Carolina or Tennessee in the first half of 2007. Honestly, he never “dominated” against any good team. Blowout losses against Florida and Alabama in 2008 and the loss to Tech from his pick 6 to Morgan Burnett sealed his legacy as a great talent who couldn’t elevate his team to championship status. That’s his legacy in the NFL too.

Nick Marshall didn’t finish his career at Georgia because Richt and Bobo wouldn’t play him at QB. Marshall went to Second Chance U after JUCO because he either stole from a teammate or wouldn’t say what happened with those who did. Either way it was a violation of the law and the UGA Honor Code.

Nick Marshall and Cam Newton are worst case and both went to AU. He won’t go to AU. They have a lame duck coach, a bad offense and the #1 QB recruit.
He will probably go someplace like Oklahoma. They have had 2 Heisman QBs in a row, but can’t win championships because they can’t play D.
Fields will get better, and he could be really good, but he dosen’t seem to have the “it” presence yet on the field. Fromm, Tua, Hurts all had it their first snap in college. How long will it take for Fields? I’ll wager we won’t have to worry about him beating Fromm and UGA should they ever face each other.

The university’s response would be irrelevant to the appeal. The appeal would be based solely on the fact that it happened and that he was the subject of it. And Kirby will support it because it makes the transfer loophole exclusive to Fields.

The sport at both the professional and college levels is awash in hypocrisy and dishonesty … it’s one of the reasons I see the sport dying a slow death over the next 25 years.
My point is that the use of this incident by a lawyer to say his client shouldn’t have to sit a year is ridiculous on its face when you consider the action by the university to deal with the said action.

Sometime over the next 3 years assuming this works as pressure on the NCAA to grant the waiver, some idiot member of the national sports media will make comments about UGA, Justin Fields and racism. Other coaches are willing to use anything as a negative recruiting tool and will use this episode as a way to tell the next Fields, “Remember what happened to Fields … That could happen to you at UGA if you go there.”

Disagree. Even the pundits who have raised this as a potential argument (and where do you think they got the idea from?) have gone out of their way to compliment UGA for the way it handled the matter.
Should the waiver be granted, I bet you Mars and Fields will go out of their way to praise Georgia for the way the situation was managed. That’s exactly what happened with Patterson, despite there being some bad feelings when that process started.

There’s a lot to this story and the timing is not optimal, coming 48 hrs. before the ESP.
What we know is the Field’s family have hired an attorney (Mars) – the same one that got the NCAA to wave transfer restriction on Shea Patterson. Good luck trying to use the Spring incident as your hardship justification. If the NCAA buys that line then the current transfer rules are out the window. Additionally, Papa Fields has entered Justin’s name in the transfer database. Seems like a done deal IMO.
What does it mean for UGA?
1. It alleviates the potential for a divided locker room in the future.
2. It takes the Fields burden off Fromm’s shoulder. IMO this will allow Jake to flourish over the next two years.
3. Kills the QB controversy in Athens.
4. Takes the Blueshirt off Plumlee.
5. Probably means we lose Hasselwood. I see them as joined at the hip.

I blame the recruiting sites for ranking HS players and us fans for accepting these rankings as gospel. Kids come into college with unreal expectations and no patience because they’re told way too often how great they are.

Honestly, if he feels he can better accomplish whatever goals he has elsewhere, then best of luck to him. It is unfortunate that even if he was just exploring options like any rational person would do, his ability to do that effectively just went out the window. From UGA’s perspective it is now very much a lose-lose situation if he stays, because this story stays a constant distraction, amplified to 11 from the faux ‘controversy’ that we heard about all year. And while he may be a tremendous talent, there is a reason he didn’t earn more significant PT this year, so is all the drama really worth it for a backup QB?
All signs point to it being in everyone’s best interest to part ways as smoothly as possible. There is just one thing I can’t wrap my mind around: the hardship waiver. UGA obviously won’t fight it, but is avoiding bad PR enough for the NCAA to set that precedent? It strikes me as a tremendous gamble by Fields’ camp, because as others have noted, if he has to sit a year at another top program, he has arguably worsened his situation, and it isn’t like the competition will be any less fierce.

I agree that now it is better for Fields to go otherwise you end up with a split locker room. The hardship waiver is another thing entirely. The Senator is right, the NCAA will fold. Best thing we can do is try to have some control about where he goes.

From my chair this looks more and more like daddy & mom (and possibly the son) think they know more than the coaching staff. I can hear dad now “my son is the top rated QB from his class and he should be the starter”. If not then we will take our ball and go elsewhere.

Imagine you won a lottery ticket. And then you had to hand that ticket off to a 3rd party for 3 years. And that 3rd party was responsible for making sure the thing cashed.
But that 3rd party seems way more interested in someone else’s lottery ticket. Yours gets picked up every now and then, but not with any real interest.
So, a year later, you’re not a year closer. Same place where you were a year ago. And a ton of really competent, competing 3rd parties are signaling you they would treat your lottery ticket better. More personalized attention.
I’m not excusing it, but JF clearly has NFL potential. His parents want him getting prepped for NFL contracts, not getting life lessons in patience. Kirby and Chaney has ample opportunity to get him more work. They didn’t. Either they knew it would result in this or they were clueless. And Kirby doesn’t strike me as clueless.

Big picture: sure. A coach’s job is to win games. Everyone understands that, especially high level recruits.
And it’s on the coaches to do what they can to make sure that winning games and helping these elite kids reach their goals are as aligned as possible. Honestly, that’s the recruiting pitch for kids at this level. Explicitly. Kirby isn’t winning these recruiting battles by telling players and families he isn’t going to do a damn thing to adjust to their talents or skill sets. He’s also not promising anyone playing time. But, he is promising that alignment, provided…
It’s on the parents and the players to do their part to make it work. Physically and mentally.
And sometimes, in spite of everyone’s best efforts, it doesn’t work out.
Which is what’s happening here. No one’s a bad guy in this. Not the coaches, player, or parents.

Wtf? He was a 5 star, which by definition means he has NFL potential. #1 recruit in his class. Everyone spent all year talking about his ridiculous physical tools. There’s no one out there saying he doesn’t have NFL potential. If he doesn’t make it to the league, then he’d hardly be the first player with that profile to fall short. But there’s no “crystal ball” at work in that assessment. Just repeating the nearly unanimous conventional opinion at this point.

1-Is his sister still going to play softball at UGA? It is not an acceptable environment for him but it is ok for her?
2-What should UGA have done? Publicly execute Sasser on the steps under the arch?
3-If UGA is a racist environment, why have other players not been subjected to this? IF this is wide spread, then it would have come out by now. No way to control what a lone individual says. You can only deal with the aftermath (and they did swiftly and effectively)
4-No question that Sasser said what he said. But really, does ANYONE think that no matter where he goes, that there is not going to be some idiot that says the same type thing.
This whole issue reeks of trying to manufacture a loophole to get out of a “contract” because of lack of playing time. I have some issues with the way he as used as well. He should have been allowed to air it out more in blowouts. Just be totally honest about it and while people may not like it, they will respect you. If you try to create an issue out of what a lone individual did (that was swiftly and summarily dealt with ), then be prepared for the blow back that will come.

Blow back from the UGA fan base. As of now there is only limited hate and vitriol thrown his way. If he keeps it about playing time, then the same crew will be spouting off. If he (by he I mean his lawyer) tries to paint UGA as some evil racist institution that he is trying to get away from then all hell will break loose. He may not be called the same thing that Sasser called him by the majority, but you can bet every other word in the dictionary will be used. It will also be directed at his family who will still be in the area. Keep it about football and nothing else. Nobody hates Eason for leaving because of the way it was handled. Most wish him nothing but good luck (unless we play them). Both sides kept it about what it was really about and did not try to invent some excuse that was not football related.

As I said already, there are a few (some have posted here). If he turns this into a University wide racial issue (yes Sasser was stupid but it was an individual) instead of just about football then it will from a few to the vast majority. After seeing the video of him walking off after the South Carolina game, we can see EXACTLY what the real issue is. If he really thought he would displace Fromm that early in the season(and in the first SEC game) or have a large role that early then he was totally delusional.

Saying that he’s uncomfortable with Sasser’s language isn’t the same thing as a University-wide racial issue, as much as you’d like to interpret it to be. Georgia dismissed Sasser from the baseball team, which is hardly an indication of what you suggest.

I’m saying the only way that he gets the waiver is if it is turned into a University wide issue. How can he argue a hostile work environment if the person who created the environment is gone and was sent packing immediately . As Morris Day below so eloquently stated, if it was that hostile, then why did he not leave at that time?

I spent 20+ years running municipal rec sports for kids and adults. The best coaches were parents who were willing (and able) to coach teams their kids were not on. THAT took dedication to all the kids.

Patterson looked great a Ole Miss, just another QB at Michigan who got waxed by that coach you guys hate.

I’d want one of the best coaches developing and educating my son, and Chaney has that.

Stars align for a frosh QB in ’17 NCG.
In ’18 SECCG another QB had the stars aligning for him.
Did not happen. Why?
Skill? Maturity?
Luck in 17 and not 18. Nope. Preparation met opportunity, and opportunity in the moment was not foregone, even after a bad play by that QB.
Jake Fromm getgs pushed into the cold, and bingo, off he goes on a great run.
Why?
Perhaps JF and company should reflect and re-evaluate the time.

Regarding this possible path of claiming a racial slur has created a hostile environment for young Mr. Fields… why the f**k didn’t he get the hell out of UGA right then and there? Why didn’t Mr. & Mrs. Fields insist that he get away from that kind of environment right away? If my son were subject to such hostility, I would be insisting he remove himself immediately and his mother and I would be trumpeting as loudly as we could to anyone that would hear about what a horrible situation our son was surrounded by.

The fact players can’t transfer – at least once – with no penalty, delay, or restriction is already a horseshit rule. It is bullshit created by colleges/coaches to have absolute control over these kids lives.
It is one sided: they can cut the kid and take his scholarship any time, but he can’t leave? That’s a pile of bullshit.
So the guy wants to leave. We all know why.
So he’s using the Sasser thing as an excuse. So what? He’s doing it because the system is outrageously rigged against the kids. That’s his only recourse to get some modicum of “fairness” and equity for himself.
I am sure Kirby has talked to Fields extensively. If he thinks Fields should stay, I am sure he made his case. If Fields leaves, he leaves. There will be many more 4 and 5 star recruits. Kirby is not hinging the future of this program on any one kid, regardless of the position.
