South Carolina, same as it ever was

Pete Fiutak’s South Carolina preview is fine, as far as it goes.  It serves to reinforce my impression of the team this year:  middling on offense, competent to good on defense (a less talented bunch than what Boom deployed at Florida, in other words), facing a brutal schedule.

It’s a team that’ll go as far as turnover margin takes it.  A typical Muschamp season, in other words.

Boom is a HC with a lot more bark than bite, operating with a significant recruiting disadvantage, at a university with little historical CFB success. All this at a time where SC’s two major rivals, UGA and Clemson, are at their all-time peak of success and popularity. They failed to make much headway with two HOF coaches in Spurrier and Holtz, will they hang with Boom and be mediocre, or chase another pipe dream hire in the next 3-4 years? As delusional and obnoxious as they are, SC fans have continued to support the program, just not sure they can hold on at this level, especially with Dabo looking to remain for another decade.

Pretty dire outlook for a school that’s ceiling is fighting Mizzou, TN, and now Kentucky to become 3rd best in the East each year. My hope is they continue to give FU fits every two years, and not injure any UGA players. They will attract a couple of talented 4 stars every year, they certainly have playing time to promise local boys, but it is hard to envision them competing for many East titles, or winning an SEC in the foreseeable future.

There sure are a lot of comments about how everything is “ok” not good, not bad from the author when talking about the team. Not very promising.

The season is going to ride on Bentley’s right arm. Which means it will be frustrating (with a few bright spots) and likely disappointing….

    • Honestly, Sides, if Bentley cuts the interceptions down and the defense can up its turnover game, there’s no reason it can’t be a good year for SC. (Other than that schedule, which looks like a total bitch.)

I got the Cocks at 6-6 in 2019 Senator. No place to hide.

Looks about right, they draw Bama and A&M from the west with Jimbo having A&M likely on the rise. I do hope they give A&M a brutally physical game the week before the Aggies come to Athens.

Muschamp does not have the personality to be a head coach and should remain a DC which he could do very well. I think they’ll let him go likely after 2020.

Bentley kills me. He looks so good at times and so bad at times. I could show plays that would make him look like a top QB in the draft. Then I could show bonehead plays that cost games against mediocre teams. I try to give him a break because he came in as a true freshman and stabilized a bad team (taking them to a bowl). He has been a solid 3 year starter but I have just seen enough to think it isn’t going to change.

The D will be much improved from last year.

Yeah, Bentley seemed to peak early. I think the problem is you don’t have enough playmakers elsewhere to take the load off of him.

What’s your take on the comments yesterday about 2020 shaping up to be “the year”? Breaking in a new QB doesn’t seem to foretell great fortune. Is the AD looking to make a change from Boom?

No improvement in run game = no improvement in record. It’s as simple as that for USCe.

You’re forgetting their 10-12 deep, massive, very talented offensive line.
      Oh wait…. that’s us!! 😃
Just can’t help smiling every time I think about that!

When the punter is rated as the #3 rated defensive player, you have some pretty glaring holes in your defense.
