A week of camp in the books

If you haven’t gotten a feel for how things are going in fall camp so far, you’ll find some hints in this Jake Rowe piece, which reflects the observations of him and others.  You won’t be surprised to learn that there’s plenty of talent to go around.  The big issue is integration of that talent at certain positions, most notably wide receiver, where there is bound to be growing pains due to a lack of game experience, particularly at Georgia.

But there is room for optimism, too.  Rowe cites Travon Walker, Nakobe Dean, Kenny McIntosh, DJ Daniel and Tyrique Stevenson as the new kids on the block who have already been showing out.

Nothing so far has led me to think that setting the two deep is going to be less than challenging for the coaches, and that, at certain positions, they’ll be writing in pencil all season.

When you list all the new talent emerging and don’t even get to Nolan Smith, you know things are looking good. (And yes, I’ve read the glowing reports on Smith as well.)

Top tier problems for sure. These are the types of problems that you don’t mind having.

Gotta love all that good news coming out of camp. I think anyone expecting to see a lot of true freshmen playing meaningful snaps this year is going to be disappointed. Kirby brings those newbees along slow. I don’t mean to rain on anyone’s parade, but we’re just too deep and talented at almost all positions. And those returning lettermen weren’t slouches when they signed. They’ve been working hard for more playing time for quite a while.

As previously posted… our travel squad to Nashville is going to be telling. Going to be some talented kids staying home.

Travel limitations are outdated, and unnecessary, these days. Home field has enough advantages without giving them additional depth. Only positive I can think of is motivating the travel bubble guys this August.
