Forgive and forget

By most accounts, Josh Brooks is a good guy doing a good job, but this comes off sounding pretty lame:

In order to accommodate the extra number of fans, UGA used 500 seats in the West End Zone student section to accommodate Notre Dame visitors sitting in the designated visitors’ section. In addition, UGA installed temporary aluminum bleachers in the West End Plaza underneath the scoreboard behind student sections 139-143 to accommodate the overflow from the West End Zone student section.

In an interview on Sept. 24, Deputy Athletic Director for Operations Josh Brooks addressed issues raised by students. In reference to staff members sending students to section 600, Brooks said that was a “huge miscommunication” and students would normally never be placed there.

“I’d like it to be known that we care and we listen,” Brooks said. “We failed, we had people who didn’t get the experience they wanted, but I do want people to know we genuinely care about their experience.”

For one, Brooks claimed his folks were ready to handle the added demands the Notre Dame game presented.

In an email ahead of the game, Brooks had said stadium staff were “prepared for all scenarios.”

“We are bringing in additional staffing to assist with security, ingress, keeping campus clean, etc.,” Brooks said.

For another, other than a meaningless apology, exactly how can you show you care about something like this experience?

By the instruction of stadium staff, Jae Choi, senior biological science major, said she and her friends were directed to sit in section 306 but were later removed by people who had paper tickets in that section. They were then told to relocate to section 600, a predominantly Notre Dame fan area. Choi claims the fans verbally attacked her and her friends and told the students “show us your tickets or leave now.”

“We were sick of all the harassment and being tossed here and there, we couldn’t even stand to watch the game. We ended up being forced to leave [by the police],” Choi said.

As the group of seniors left the stadium, Choi said they saw multiple students tearfully arguing with staff members. This prompted Choi’s friend to “burst out bawling,” after wishing to be a part of “one last, huge game” his senior year.

Tickets are sold.  Seats are taken.  Kids are graduating.  There won’t be another oversold game like last Saturday night in the foreseeable future.  So it’s essentially impossible to take concrete action to make up for the bad taste Choi and her group have in their mouths.  Nor will there be a future setting in which Brooks can demonstrate that B-M has learned its lesson.

Again, a textbook case on how not to build future good will — and it comes from one of the better folks in the department.  I’ve stopped being amazed at how bad these people are at doing the whole fan friendly thing.  The difference between me and McGarity is that he never was amazed about it in the first place.

McGarity would probably point to the new lighting system as evidence of improving the experience of the fans. But I suspect they were actually installed to improve the experience of the recruits and to be sure the fans do their job of impressing them.

Brooks could put his money where his mouth is by seeking out the students who were removed and doing something tangible to demonstrate his remorse and promote good will. Maybe give them some of the perks reserved for big-money donors like some behind the scenes access for a game.

There’s a lot they could do. Throw some swag at them and keep it on the down-low. A side-line pass for pre-game. Something simple like that.

To that point, I would add that the students are taking up more room/space when they are standing, than they would if they were sitting. I have to think that has something to do with it.
(And fwiw, while there is more than enough incompetence to go around on game day, I have never actually seen someone with a ticket be “forced to leave” by the police unless they were repeatedly drunk and obnoxious or had contraband….)

I have to disagree wit the standing students take up more room comment. Having stood in the student section I can tell you they stand on the seat and in the ground so almost doubling the capacity.

I think it’s funny how before/after the game McGoofy was taking a victory lap in his “Minutes”, the AJC, etc. but feeds his underling to the angry masses and is nowhere to be seen on this issue. Not surprised one bit as the guy is a spineless jellyfish.

Giving complimentary tickets to high school coaches and 100 recruits and their families didn’t help this either. Also printed paper tickets and electronic tickets should not have been allowed for this game. A young ND fan showed up in the middle of the 3rd quarter demanding my seat. His ticket was on his phone. I’m not sure how he picked me.

They’re not concerned at all with being fan-friendly, especially student-friendly. They’re concerned with being donor-friendly.

My student-daughter had the Sanford experience of her college life last Saturday night. I can only imagine how outraged I’d be if she called up crying under those circumstances described by those students.

I sit in 306. I believe I saw these students get removed. It is a section made up of regular-attending season ticket holders…very surprised someone told them to go to 306. My guess is that someone was trying to steer them to the 309 student section and there was confusion along the way.

I was thinking going to where they told you to sit or finding somewhere else in the stadium to watch the game. They had student tickets obviously or they wouldn’t have been let in the stadium to start with. They left the 600 level seats because the ND fans were mean to them.

I don’t love McGarity and how BM handles the in stadium experience but this story isn’t one that I can blame on them. Snowflakes need to learn the world is not arranged to cater to their every desire.

This demonstrates that you have absolutely no idea how few empty seats there are for a game like this. Or even just spots where you can stand and watch the game.

That is such a pile of crap. These students were sold tickets that give them general admission access in sections 109-114, 138-143, and 308-313. The fact there was nowhere for them in those sections isn’t catering “to their every desire.” They wanted the same courtesy that I as a season ticket holder have to have a place to watch the game. If the AA oversold student tickets and people with tickets in other places decided to sit in the student section, that is the AA’s problem.

Hmm, I’ll assume you are correct about the student section numbers and, if so, Ms. Choi was indeed sitting in a non student section (306). I guess this little group of snowflakes were sitting in seats some non student had paid for.

The AA oversold student tickets or every student ID with a ticket was presented for entry. People decided to upgrade their location to the student section (since it’s general admission), to relive their days in college or to squeeze in their non-student friends into the student section. The event staff told them to go sit in the 300 level or 600 level.

Brooks may be throwing himself on the sword to deflect attention to above and to be a good soldier, but the AA admitted they didn’t handle student seating correctly.

Well, sort of like the Notre Dame game. In both cases I got to be with my brothers, one natural and two friends for 50 years. My brother from California came for the game and he thought it was great. I really enjoyed it and am glad we won. Then I come here and read the whiners, ugh. As fro the fishing, incredible boat, a captain and mate who worked there asses off to get us on fish. Results? I caught a 60 lb yellowfin, not the biggest I’ve caught but ok. Everything else was small tuna or bonita. The bonita were fun to catch but all went back. We went inshore the next day and caught some nice reds, black drum and sheepshead but the guide was not happy that we didn’t limit out. Yesterday we had great food, did the Pacific wing of the WW2 Museum and some music. All in all it was a great and exhausting week. We got the win, I brought back about 15lbs of tuna and, most important, got to be with people I really care about. I’d say it was an epic week.

          thx

Yes sir! I’d certainly consider that an excellent week. A 60 lb tuna is plenty large enough to make me happy. The reds are a bonus. I hope to replicate your success to include a tour of the museum. I haven’t been since opening weekend June 2000 when it was simply the D Day museum.
            Many thanks for the update.

With general admission seating, you will never get a one-for-one student/seat arrangement unless you regiment it like Wisconsin.

Better strategy would have been to put in larger bleachers on the bridge plaza and used them as overflow. There was room for it.

I’m not going to argue that staffers could have done a better job, but the article reinforced my belief that most of the blame can be placed on the students. They claim they were in the stadium more than an hour before kickoff but the student section was full. Well, from my view in 335, I can see ALL off the student sections, and they weren’t full. The 300 level student section and upper third of the endzone weren’t full until about 30 minutes before kickoff, and the temporary bleachers weren’t full until kickoff itself. Sounds more like they came into the stadium later than advised, stupidly headed for the most popular student seating areas, and then failed to obtain seating until it was too late. Also, if you attend UGA games as a student, it’s inconceivable that you wouldn’t know what sections you can sit in, allowing yourself to be directed to a non-student section. ESPECIALLY when the student received emails with updated and explicit instructions for gameday explaining where to sit, to arrive early, and to TEXT a direct line for help if you were having trouble with seating.

I have ZERO sympathy for a student body that has failed to fill up the student section 98% of the time over the past 15 years.

Nice logic. You’re acting like the same problem wouldn’t have existed if everyone had just got there earlier. The student sections still would have been overflowing and students would have been left with nowhere to go. It just would have happened earlier.

And if this happened when you wanted it to (an hour before kickoff) instead of when it did, what would you rant and rave about? I guess you could always go with “well, they should have got there TWO hours early!” Or you could just double down on “students today suck and don’t deserve my sympathy!”.

As I said, they claim they were in the stadium more than an hour before kickoff. There were empty seats in each of the major student seating sections at that time, and even closer to kickoff. The claim that they couldn’t find a seat is ludicrous. The 300 level above the band had plenty of seats at that point in time, as did the upper third of the endzone section. Other students listed in the article complain that they were directed to a non-student section. Having graduated in 2010, and still receiving emails through the UGA listserv today, I can tell you that EVERY student received multiple gameday notices reminding them verbally and visually which sections were designated student sections. They were the same as they have always been, save for 500 seats that were relocated to neighboring bleachers in the endzone. The notices that went out also urged students to arrive earlier than usual to account for anticipated delays and possible confusion. That these students failed to follow any guidance from the university is on them. To top it off, there were MANY seats still available at the time they say they arrived to the game. When you arrive to your preferred section by the band and its full, logic would tell you to go up to the 300 level seats or to the endzone seating that was still available. Relying on blue-shirted event staffers rather than your own experience and guidance you received during the week would be stupid.

While there is no question the McDoofy staff made errors, then handled them poorly (and who is surprised by that?), you are correct. Network cutaways that I saw about the upcoming UGA/ND game while players were warming show exactly what you are saying, nothing was filled up, and over flowing one hour before kickoff. Doesn’t mean there weren’t too many people allowed access to the stadium for a variety of reasons, this happens to someone at every high-demand event I have ever attended.

The key is how the staff was trained and reacted, and how do they learn from that for the future. Accommodations and efforts should take place ASAP to those who were disenfranchised. Now the senior who broke down and cried because of this incident should understand that he/she being victimized by this shows they are not yet ready for the real world problems they will encounter. This wasn’t “snuggle animal” worthy, there are people dealing with hunger, loss of job, cancer diagnosis, loss of limbs, deth of a close friend.family member, etc. situations that do meet that standard.

Not sure why anyone would heed anything the CSC guys are saying, particularly if you have a ticket in hand for the section you are going to… I am no fan of the police in general or the ACC/University police in particular, but have never seen anyone “forced out” (as they claim) who had a ticket and was not being a drunk asshole or in possession of contraband…. What fucking difference does it make if a student who paid for admission arrived at 6:30 or at kickoff? When the University Athletic Association took their money and issued them a ticket the University was obligated to provide space for them. None of those students had a ticket saying it was only good if enter by 7:00.
The crux of the problem was that the AA did not bring in enough temporary seats and did not prepare for the inevitable problem.

I guarantee that if you had paid for tickets in section 105 you would expect to sit there regardless if you arrived at 6:30 or 7:50.

If you arrived and UGA AA had oversold section 105 and you got there and someone else was in the seat and the security told you to walk to the 600 level and look for space you would be pissed.
