In our podcast this week, Tony asked me if I thought the Harbaugh-Smart comparisons apparently winding their way around the intertubes have any traction. I was skeptical, and that was before I saw this factoid after last night’s latest Michigan blowout:
Losing two games this season that weren’t close sucks, but we’ve got a long way to go before Georgia hits bottom like that.
“Losing two games this season that weren’t close sucks, but we’ve got a long way to go before Georgia hits bottom like that.”
Thank Gawd……but the season ain’t over. Pretty sure I have never seen this many injuries on a Dawg team.
Hoping we don’t see a replay of the ’94 Vandy game (if played).

There were at least as many injuries in 2013, pretty sure of that. That team was really beat up on offense.

I know it is ancient history but the 1977 team was destroyed by injuries. Our QB room was especially hard hit, culminating in our being down to our 5th string QB playing against Tech, getting injured and watching our 6th string QB finish the game. The 5th and 6th string dressed because they were bg default the top of the depth chart going into the game.

Between probable, questionable and out, I count 18 players. Who knows what it will be game time….probable is not definite.
Not sure what game you are talking about in ‘77, but I certainly don’t remember it being beat up this bad….not to say it wasn’t, just don’t recall it this bad.
Just hoping this season has no direct negative affect on recruiting…

As I said, we were down to playing our 6th string QB (Davy Sawyer, iirc) against Georgia Tech when our 5th string (freshman Chris Welton, before moving to defense) got injured.

That makes only 6, do you know the total number?
Can’t ever remember 6 QB’s on our roster.

The roster sizes were larger back then than now. Greg, I know what I am talking about. I was at the 1977 Tech game. I was a student at the time.

By the way, including walk-on QBs and scout teamers wd started camp with at least 6 QBs. Newman, Mathis, Daniels, Bennett, Beck, thevtransfer from Nevada whose name I can recall and Muschamp.

Maybe you do, but this is the second time on a different occasion you tried to argue this.
You mentioned only 6 players being out in ‘77, I mentioned a total of 18 that could possibly miss the next game.
I am really not sure what you are trying to argue, but from my original post in this thread….I am just saying that I do not recall a team ever having this many injuries (in total)…..and yes, I was around in ‘77.
FWIW, there are only 5 QB’s on the Dawgs roster in ‘77. Again, I certainly don’t ever recall as many as 6 QB on any roster. Not saying it has never happened, just saying I don’t ever recall it.

In reply to your post at 6:10 Anthony Flanagan was on scholarship as a QB but never got in a game because of an eligibility issue. He was second behind Pyburn going into fall camp. That made Cook 3rd string, Rogers 4th string, Welton 5th string and Dawyer 6th string.
To address your other point, I am not arguing a damn thing other than the 1977 team was another team whose potential was ruined by a bunch of injuries. I don’t recall the number of injuries at other positions except I remember Greg Williams, a starting DL, suffering a career ending neck injury in the 4th game at Alabama.
You say the 2013 team had more injuries than any other. I never argued against that; I just pointed out that other UGA teams had seasons ruined by injuries, too. I will argue with you or anyone else who wants to claim that any other UGA team in 50 years had more injuries at QB.
If you want me to praise you for your terrific insight and knowledge about the 2013 team, I do so praise.

I never said the ‘13 team did, you’re getting me confused with gastr1. I was speaking of this years team and our next game which I indicated (18 players).
Go back and read it again. Looks like you are the only one who is arguing QB’s.
Not looking for an argument, but it looks like you are trying your best to have one. If you want to argue, at least keep up with what is being posted.
May peace be with you..

I agree, and it leaves me wondering what has happened to Harbaugh. Can’t recall a coach being clearly excellent and then so quickly sliding into mediocrity.

I think it’s different for a coordinator versus an HC, though. Coordinators can just get outschemed as the game changes. (Notably, Van Gorder was never a good HC.) The HC generally is busying hiring coordinators that recruit to competition and strategic relevance. Or so one would think…maybe this is Harbaugh’s issue.

I’m pretty sure, given the stubbornness of the UM fans and AD, Harbaugh being a UM legend as a player has bought him enough time and rope that even UM will pay up at the end of this year. He either is as crazy as he acts or he just doesn’t give a rat’s butt at this point. Those trips to Europe were nice though.

Scheduled for12/12 is tOSU and UM. Harbaugh best hope is the game is cancelled. If played I expect it to be really ugly fast with no mercy.

Kirby recruits 1000x better than Harbaugh for one. Kirby also has won some big games. He regularly beats his rivals rather than loses to them.
Both are stubborn. But that’s true for all football coaches.

Too bad college football doesn’t award recruiting national championships. The trophy case in Butts Mehre would be full to overflowing from the Goff, Donnan, Richt, and Smart eras. It reminds me of a famous quote by SOS about the difference between UGA recruiting and coaching.
I’m here to remind those of you who are still drunk from 2017 that it is now three years later and Kirby Smart has a worse overall and SEC won/loss record than his predecessor at the same point in each coach’s career.

The comparison was with Harbaugh. Kirby runs rings around Jim in the area of recruiting.
Has Kirby fulfilled the promise of that recruiting? Has his roster met its potential? Different questions altogether, and you’re welcome to pose them, but try not to put words in my mouth or get snarky about points I did not make.
Thanks

Apparently UM under Harbaugh has never won a game they weren’t already favored to win.

They have also lost a ton they were favored in. See MSU for example.

If the Harbaugh comparison is that he was brought in to get them over the hump against OSU and take them to the next level while being handed untold resources, we may be headed in that direction.
CKS has thus far been a beneficiary of an SECE in turmoil, that trend is likely to continue with the exception of UF, who appear to be in the ascendancy.
As important as it is for us to find a QB in ’21, if UF wants continuity in their ascendancy they too will need to find a QB or hope Jones is better than he has shown this year. Otherwise, next year is a coin flip game between our two teams.
However TN, KY, Vandy, SC don’t appear to be any threat. Only Mizzou stands to offer any resistance in the East.
We don’t, however to be any real threat to Alabama, just as Michigan never seemed to be any threat to OSU’s dominance. We got close, within sniffing distance, but now we seem to be losing ground again.
CKS is in a tough spot. Winning the East is basically the base of what is acceptable. But even that loses its currency if we continue to get shelled by Bama and/or LSU.
Bama will surely lose Sark and Jones in the offseason, but they appear to have a capable replacement for Jones, have the resources to find a good passing game coordinator and no doubt will restock their receiver core in addition to their young WRs that already have been torching our slow DBs.
So where does that leave CKS?
If he loses 2 or 3 in a row to Florida, we are realistically 4th in the conference, even if it’s 11-2. That’s not gonna fly anymore than 8-5 is at Michigan.
CKS has, IMO, two seasons left at UGA if he fails to capture the East.
I would like to ask objectively, if Kirby was released at the end of this season, what would his market value be on the open market.
His only high level reputation at this point now seems limited to that of a recruiter. I don’t think anyone sees him as a scheming savant, game day coach or a more-with-less guy.
I don’t think he gets the contract value at any other school at this point that he has at Georgia, but that is just my opinion, feel free to disagree.

Very true unfortunately. Recruiting guru, roster management and development def lacking, game plan deficient, in game adjustment deficient. Start slow and flat every game, but if what we’re doing is working, switch it up to something less effective. 4 d chess right? QB room disaster. Stubborn man-baller to a fault. Excuse making skills off the charts. Talking in circles about nothing expert. Doing less with more doctorate. I really did have really high hopes for him. Just seems things are starting to come apart at the seems. Gotta wonder if the locker room and separately, the coaches room aren’t dealing with some internal friction at this time.
And I really hate feeling this way, by the way.

I’m willing to give Kirby a pass on this season providing we see some improvement in the remaining games. Monken was the right hire; just a season later than needed, but he wasn’t on the market last year. Imagine Fromm with open receivers to throw to. With four games left to look at Daniels, Mathis and Beck at QB we will figure it out. The key is making sure we keep Vandagriff in the fold. Kirby is not a stupid man. He knows the mistakes that were made, the crappy luck we had plus the injuries. This year may be a blessing in disguise and we come out firing next year assuming we have Spring practice and a full fall camp. The Dawgs will be fine. Finally, if we kick Kirby to the curb who’s the replacement?
