The best job in America

Staples has been on that kick for a while now.  Here’s what he said about it all the way back in 2015:

Do Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina and others come in and poach Georgia talent? Absolutely. But there’s such an abundance of it in the state that Georgia can afford to lose a few top in-state targets and still field a team capable of competing for SEC and national titles. Alabama and Auburn have to invade Georgia. During that five-year period, their state produced 36.4 Power Five signees a year. People talk about LSU’s monopoly in its state, but the numbers between Louisiana and Georgia aren’t even close. Louisiana’s average number of Power Five signees during that span was 38.6 a year.

Add to this great facilities (now that the Bulldogs are building an indoor), great tradition, a sharp athletic director, possibly the best college town in America and the fact that they play in the easier division of the nation’s deepest conference. That’s the recipe for a great job that just about every coach in America would crawl over broken glass to take.

I dinged him for that “sharp athletic director” comment, and, really, it’s amazing to think that back then, folks outside the program considered Greg McGarity to be an asset.  The reality is that Georgia football from that period was something of a dysfunctional mess and that Richt and McGarity were essentially working at cross-purposes with each other.

If Georgia since then has in fact become the nation’s paragon in that regard, it’s because Kirby Smart was given carte blanche to remake the program and nobody, especially including McGarity, stood in his way.

When Smart accepted the job, McGarity didn’t issue marching orders. He asked questions. What did Smart now need from the administration to build a championship program? “He needed to educate us,” McGarity says, “about what it meant to go big-time.”

I don’t know if it’s the best job in the country, but I do believe it’s a better place to be a head coach at than it was when Mark Richt had to pay his assistants’ bonuses out of his own pocket.  Then again, maybe I don’t understand college football at all.

But I thought Tennessee was the best job in the country? At least that’s what I’ve been hearing for years…

Having to pay bonuses out of his own pocket should have caused the AD to resign on the spot.

$30 mil (at the time) in unused “rainy day” funds, and the HC to has pay his assistants not take jobs elsewhere…an absolute disgrace.

Georgia’s such a good job that McGarity thought about staffing it with unpaid interns.

  4. So, how many power five signees did the state of Georgia produce over that five year span?

I think people like to claim that lack of in state talent makes jobs like UT and others difficult.

But as you can see, LSU and Bama are getting it done even though they are not in states loaded with prospects.

Their failure is not because they don’t have talent in their back yard. Their failure is because they aren’t attractive to recruits from other states for various reasons, chief among them coaches and ADs.

A master recruiter and coach like Urban Myer absolutely could make UT, Auburn, etc, a powerhouse again. The facilities are there. They have storied programs. They just have to stop shooting themselves in the foot.

It’s really Florida’s story, too. Mullen can’t land talent for whatever reason.

I’m not sure what Tech’s issues are, I’m assuming academic standards. But there really is no reason they aren’t in the ACC’s too four every year.

Let’s just hope all these rivals continue to be led by incompetence and that we are able to overcome Bama at some point.

  5. I’d put Ohio State and LSU above us, simply because those states aren’t transient at all. Everyone who lives there is from there and has more of a draw to the big state school.

I’d also still say USC is up there whenever they can get out of their own way. Being able to own the entire country West of Dallas is still a massive advantage.

The challenge with the USCsr job is they lack in coaching salaries and facilities. The PAC12 network has been an albatross for all of the conference members and they’ve fallen far behind in resources, recruiting and facilities compared to the other P5 schools. USC has a wealthy alumni base, but it’s kind of a chicken and egg situation. They need conference financial resources to build a winning program and alumni will contribute heavily to a winning program. Plus you’ve got the Oregon Ducks to compete against for the spotlight.

Agreed. USC could be a top job. It would be interesting if they were in a conference that cared about college football like, say, the SEC or the Big XII.

I’d put OSU and other similars (OU, Clemson) ahead simply because it’s too hard to win this conference.

Easy ass route to 10 wins (i.e. job security) at Clemson, OU, OSU etc.

I think UCLA could be a powerhouse program. The first time I visited the campus, I was pissed off I had spent 4+ years in Athens. The campus is gorgeous, the women are unbelievably hot by several orders of magnitude greater than SEC chicks, the weather is perfect, and their home stadium is more storied than Sanford. I can’t understand why UCLA fell off in the 1980s.

L.A. and California suck, and the woman are all made of plastic.

I’ll take Athens, GA and who Kirk Herbstreit has described for years as the best looking coeds in all of CFB over anything in Commiefornia.

I don’t know JR. Their stadium is not even on campus. I’ve never been to the UCLA campus, but spent a little time in LA. The chicks are hot, no doubt, but it is Hollywood. Are you seriously saying that there are more hot chicks per capita on the UCLA campus than the UGA campus? If so, I am duly impressed. But “several orders of magnitude “? I have to call bullshit on that.

Same here Ghurka. I have actually been involved in a traffic accident because a lovely UGA coed lifted her minidress to clean her sunglasses, exposing a very small pair of blue underpants. We jumped the curb on South Lumpkin and ended up in that parking lot off Wray. I says to the driver: “WTF Bob? You’ve never seen a girl before?”

Damn right, Gurkhadawg. I came to UGA Winter Qtr 1980 after spending an eternity surrounded by hard tails and skanks passing for split tails. Was seriously contemplating starting all over at West Point when Big Dave, the doorman at the B&L Warehouse, took me behind Brumby Hall on the first warm day of the year. Oh my! Gorgeous ladies in bikinis laying out on the hill forming the most magnificent sight ever beheld to my young eyes. Thoughts of leaving disappeared immediately.
Of course if I were a mouth breathing moron I would think a pack of vacuous, plastic-infused airheads from a west coast shithole looked better.

  6. Georgia is the best job in the country for a multitude of reasons. We have better high school talent than Ohio, deeper high school talent than any state outside of Texas, Florida and California, a college town that pretty much blows every other big football school away (other than Austin), an excellent public university (no matter what one of our commenters claims about his alma mater), and a commitment to win big.

We should expect to be the mix every year, period. That’s exactly what I expect.

There is money to do anything you want. Yeah Richt struggles with this but Kirby has proven the money is there.
    Talent is easy to find
Athens is a nice place for your family. I’m sure half the coaches don’t care.

I think OSU, Texas, and USC are in the same group with Bama, LSU, Oklahoma, and UF right behind.

Of all places, I never been to Gainesville, but maybe this year I will. Wisky would be great minus 6 months of suck. OU? also god awful. Ive been to every square inch of that state and I cant think of one moment or place i much enjoyed. I am not a fan of Austin, Ive been to every square inch of Texas just about, its just not my thing. And in Austin, different from BR, you arent the King, you are the King that everyone needs to give an earful too. But I’d rather be in Austin that OU, or Nebraska, or Columbus.

They used to have a lot of recruits regionally also. Its a job that could be turned around, but its going to require some culture changing. and not like 404 waffle house, like, some real public speaking, leadership, and maybe some house cleaning of 50 year old good old boys.

SO in other words, they will continue to be children of the corn.

It could be the best job in America if our President and Athletic Director were all in on excellence rather than profitability. As is, Alabama is head and shoulders over UGA as a job. They’re committed to excellence and have been following a plan to achieve that goal for years.

I agree that Bama is the best job as long as you are Nick Saban. But put a guy in there that goes three in a row without winning the SEC and the job begins to suck. He will be dealing with the likes of Phyllis from Mulga and Harvey Updike. Lose to Auburn twice in three years and he’ll be afraid to take his family out for dinner.
      He’ll be Bill Curry.
This is why that job isn’t really number one.
It depends on who’s holding the title. It won’t always be Nick Saban and if Kirby stays at Georgia long enough, the next Bama coach is going to have a problem.
I think Kirby has just enough to Saban’s, “I don’t have time for that shit” attitude to be the next great and dominate coach in the league.

Exactly. Bama tops the metrics in a few things that are relevant to the “what is the best job” question. But those same metrics are a major albatross to what, IMO, are the more relevant characteristics of what “makes X the best job.”

This argument always devolves into what program is currently rolling at the top. To that crowd, I want to ask “why don’t you just change the damn question to who has the most titles?”

        • otto1980

Bama is tops in many areas. However Richt wouldn’t last 14 years at Bama. It all depends on how you weight the metric. UGA has talent, resources, history, fan base, and doesn’t fire as quickly as most other programs in the same realm of the first 4.

I’d love to know the collective difference of the wealth of the two alumni bases. My gut says UGA’s base is wealthier if for no other reason than the number of graduates over the last five decades. A significant difference between Bama and Georgia is that Bama heavily recruits out-of-state freshmen and Georgia has the HOPE grant. Auburn gets the in-state kids and half of TTown is from Texas.

First off Senator, you DO know college football. I’ve benefitted greatly from the knowledge imparted by you and and many members on this board.
Secondly, UGA is the best HC job in football. It hasn’t always been. For the reasons listed above it is now.
Athens is a great place to base your life. Good dining and nightlife. Business in the surrounding counties is booming. Thirty minutes in three directions and you’re deep in the woods. An hour west and you can satisfy your big city desires. Quick access to a major airport and easy drive to mountains and lakes for recreation.
I am about weary of the long drive to the ocean. 300 feet or so sea level rise to the fall line would solve a lot of problems. Yeah, well…

Georgia is a great job. I’m not even going to try to be rational about it.

From a winning stand point, I think LSU and OU are also great jobs. At LSU you have an entire talent-rich state to yourself plus entry into SE Texas/Houston; at OU you have access to Texas without Texas’s booster problem (see yesterday’s post on “Eyes”).

Clearly, Alabama is a great job – but we’ve seen it in the hands of middling coaches. I remember clearly when Brodie Croyle was murdered between the hedges. Bama might actually be more about Saban than Bama. And Ohio State is a great job – they’re running roughshod over the B1G and will and have a national recruiting profile. I see Ohio State and Alabama as about the same, really.

I agree with many here that USC is just waiting to re-emerge. They have the cache no other program in the Pac has, they just need to go all-in. Now that they’ve thrown off the commissioner, they may be able to make some hay.

I’m not sure where to put Clemson. Clemson is benefiting a lot from FSU’s decline and Miami’s stagnation and Va Tech just not being able to keep up. If any of those three gets it back together – particularly the Florida duo – it’ll get interesting. Plus, it’s all about the assistants, too. We’ll see in a hundred so days though I guess.

I have no doubt that had Saban not came back to the SEC that Richt would have eventually won a national title. Saban changed everything. Florida could get away without spending money because they had Spurrier and then Meyer because they could do so the powers at Georiga could get away with it too.
Richt was great. Kirby is great. Miles was the 2d best coach ever at LSU. Malzahn is Auburn’s 2d best coach ever. Saban is the best coach in the history of college football and he has changed everything for all the teams in this conference.
I have said it before but it bears repeating, what happens at Bama post-Saban is going to be extremely interesting and will probably make the last decade or so at Tennessee look like a success story, or will Saban leave the program in good enough shape to continue.

If the question is which school has the best confluence of advantages to make a HC’s job successful, then yes post-Adam/McGarity UGA would be at or near the top of that list.

That said, I think Mack Brown has the actual best HC job in America. UNC has all the same elements as UGA – Chapel Hill as college town, in-state talent, natural surroundings, history – just dialed down a few notches and without the pressure cooker environment of the SEC. The academics, both k-12 and colleges in area, make it a great place to raise a family.
