The sputtering and disbelief over the news that Mark Emmert’s had his contract extended an additional two years is simply epic. Here’s just one example:
The most galling part of the contract extension the NCAA Board of Governors gave to president Mark Emmert on Tuesday is that it was embarrassed to give it to him. It is made up almost entirely of college presidents, a group of people that often pay $50,000 retainers to public relations consultants to use buzz words like “transparency” and “accountability.”
When it actually came time to be accountable, transparent and show a smidge of credibility, the “servant leaders” — there’s another favorite — all hid like the gutless and clueless group we’ve expected leading the NCAA.
In the 494th word of a press release the NCAA sent out at 9:06 p.m. on Tuesday, the organization snuck in a casual mention — under the heading “Other Business” — that embattled president Mark Emmert received a two-year contract extension. His deal is now extended through 2025, and the NCAA poured another layer of cement on its reputation as the most dysfunctional and rudderless organization in sports.

I have to confess that I misread the situation when I saw the news that Emmert was in the mix to be the next head of LSU. I thought he was looking for an exit strategy. Instead, he borrowed Todd Grantham’s annual move of exploring his NFL options to wrangle a better deal out of the school.
Mark Emmert just Jimmy Sexton’d the NCAA! He is truly their indispensable man. Talk about a bunch that deserve each other…

He’s doing exactly what the non-Power 5 want him to do … Keep the Power 5 conferences under the NCAA’s umbrella for as long as possible.

If the Power 5 conferences wanted Emmert out, re-upping him over their objection doesn’t strike me as a plan to keep the dissidents in the organization.

If Emmert was giving the Power 5 everything they want at the expense of the rest of the rest of the NCAA, he would be out in a heartbeat. He’s giving them just enough to keep them around for the March Madness money trough.

I recommend that folks read the linked Yahoo Sports article and see how disliked Emmert is among the troops. it gives insight into why he is still around. University presidents have to raise money and manage universities. There plates are piled over as is is, and it would be an unwelcomed distraction to become familiar enough with sports issues to manage Emmert. I can imagine the University presidents thinking, “I don’t have time for this. That’s why we have a board of governors, so they can manage him and not me.”

A gender equity review of NCAA championships? I am curious what they are looking for? Is there an inbalance of numbers? This is not a political question. I am genuinely curious what they are comparing.

I believe it came about because of a noticeable disparity in access to workout equipment and conditions between the Men’s and Women’s basketball tournament sites (which are facilitated by the NCAA). Prompted a deeper dive into what else isn’t necessarily on par within NCAA-controlled settings (I don’t think this a school-centric Title IX thing).

I believe Dartmouth and some other schools intended to eliminate some of the women’s sports, reduce schollies, etc. The women came down on them hard, not only about the reductions, but about all the $$ being used on male facilities. Schools have been squirming since. This isn’t going away anytime soon. I advise investing in popcorn stocks.

Maybe it’s time we recognize he’s the NCAA’s Bill Hancock, and nothing more.
He’s the guy who is paid well to take the abuse from all angles, much like Hancock did for years about the BCS, so much so they hired him to continue to take the abuse about the Playoff.
I don’t know that he Jimmy Sexton’d the NCAA as much as there was no way the Presidents were ever going to fire him because he’s far too valuable as a magnet for abuse that lets them continue living their lives.

Robert Gates is on the BoG… the bureaucrat who had the grand foresight to prematurely cancel the F-22 program, because there were no looming peer-state threats. Fast forward to the present… Su-57, J-20, etc. No wonder Emmert was extended.

My only surprise there was the timing. Normally that type of release is late Friday evening. Allowing the news cycle several days to move on. Just that that they didn`t shows how comfortable they are with his leadership.

This kinda shit is why I roll my eyes whenever someone starts talking about “the meritocracy.” You don’t need imagination, insight, wisdom, or compassion to succeed these days—just a good PR person and a board that’s too dumb/scared to get rid of you.

I think they were afraid to cut him in the middle of the NIL thing. If they get killed by the SCOTUS and the states/feds his butt will be gone, with the standard hush money payout.

I guess, but why was it necessary to renew him? Why not wait to see what the SCOTUS does and maybe save yourself a bundle of money? It boggles my mind. Maybe his contract was up and they had to do something, but I didn’t think that was the case.
