TFW you’re a football school

In case you missed it last night — and who could blame you, really? — that’s the reaction of Georgia’s men’s basketball head coach to the news that the ninth (!) player from last season’s roster elected to depart Athens via the transfer portal.  That’s just a hair short of 70% of the roster turning over, if your math skills are a little weak.  Or, to put it another way, if a similar percentage of football players decided to head for the hills, Kirby Smart would be down 59 guys.

Sounds pretty hairy, amirite?  Well, not to Josh Brooks.

“We’ve taken some hits in our basketball program, and so have others,” Brooks said. “We’ve got a coach who has got a history of developing players who have moved on to the NBA, we know his lineage, we have to take advantage of that.”

Cool, cool, cool, Josh.  Wonder why nobody thought of that before, as Georgia slugged its way in Crean’s three years to an overall 41–49 (.456) record and an even more scintillating 14–40 (.259) conference mark.

My point here isn’t to rag on Brooks, who’s stuck in the unfortunate position of having to make do with a crappy situation he inherited.  In fact, I’m not sure I’d do anything different at this point.  There isn’t a coach in America who could step in tomorrow if Crean were gone and fashion a winning team out of the roster wreckage.  If that’s the case, one might as well sit back, wait a year or so for Crean’s buyout to decrease significantly, can him then and hire someone new for a lot less money who, if we’re honest, probably couldn’t do a lot worse.  That’s a pretty good savings, all told.

My point isn’t even to whine about the state of the basketball program (although feel free to do so in the comments, if you’re inclined).  What I would like you to think about is the comparison between where Butts-Mehre currently finds itself with Crean and where it was in the last two years of Mark Richt’s time in Athens.  In 2014-5, Richt went a combined 19-6 overall and 11-5 in the SEC, played in the postseason and had his 2014 team ranked in the top ten at season’s end.  If Crean had shown similar success, they’d be throwing ticker tape parades for him; for his work, Richt was unceremoniously shown the door.  And paid a $4 million buyout.

Therein lies the rub, my friends.  The boosters love only one sport in Athens, and by “love”, I mean “willing to open the checkbook”.  If anyone flush gave a rat’s ass about basketball the way they do about football, I doubt Josh Brooks would sound so sanguine about Crean’s future prospects for the red and black.  (Crean would probably sound less arrogant, too, for that matter.)  But that’s where we are, which is pretty much where we’ve always been.

So, just remember the next time you hear a Georgia athletic director say something like this

“Before you can truly evaluate any coach, you have to evaluate yourself internally as an administration, and make sure we’re doing everything in our power to help them be successful,” Brooks said. “A lot of times we want to point the fingers at others, but I want to tell everyone that it all starts here in the administration.

“I’ve talked about wanting to win a championship in every sport that we sponsor, 21 sports, so it all starts with, are we doing everything we can to give them a chance to be successful with their conference peers and national peers.”

… that we get the athletic directors the boosters think we deserve.  That works as long as you share the same priorities.

Baseball is in the same boat with a bit better record. As in McGoofy’s case , Brooks is but a puppet of Jere Deadhead. When it’s “not about the money”, it’s about the money.

If by “a bit better record” you mean a 68% winning percentage (127-60) the past 4 seasons and being on the cusp of a 3rd straight postseason appearance (a likely 4th if there were a 2020 postseason) then, sure, only “a bit better.” Could things be better for baseball and does it need some attention from the AD? Absolutely. But let’s not put it on the same level as basketball when they’re worlds apart at this point.

    • Given the fact that Brooks reports directly to President Morehead, he is going to do what the President would like him to do. If Morehead is just Il Duce 2.0, why do we have $100m+ invested in football facilities?

The problem is the well-heeled boosters don’t care about sports outside of football. Therefore, few are going to make a Magill Society type of commitment to other sports.

While Brooks could not see 9 players leaving, including his best 3; he made his bed with Crean whe he did not fire him after the season. And the Senator hit it. $7.2MMM this year. Next year the buyout is $3.2MM. And it gives him time to truly vet candidate4s and come up with a plan well in advance of the end of next season. And it gives Cream one more year to figure it out; which is important in the hiring process. The Coach coming in, will want time. Crean gone in three, would send a very bad message to the coaching community. But if Crean fails again and is gone in four – that is easier explained.

Could be wrong, but I’m guessing that the Woman’s Soccer Coach, Mens Basektball Coach have both been told that they have the upcoming year to fiugre it out.

On another note; Georgia needs to upgrade it’s baseball facilities. The Dawgs should never take a back seat to Tech in any sport; and right now, we are getting our a$$es kicked. Tech has an incredible facility now that would compete with Triple A Farm Clubs, with the skyline as their backdrop. Foley Field needs to be torn down and completely rebuilt.

Georgia Football will eventually push Track and Field out of where they are. So why not take full advantage of that,;and build a World Class Facility for Track and Field now and plan it out.

All of this cost money. But Georgia has the money. It just needs to be proplerly planned and executed. As for Crean. Losing no sleep here. He either turns it aorund in the coming year or he’s gone.

    • Facilities in general need to be rethought, but it’s all about where you play in the meantime.

I don’t know that there’s a good answer to that.

It’d be pretty easy for Georgia to play at Cool Ray in a season where you build a new baseball stadium. That’s still well within the geographical sweet spot for UGA fans and not too tough from Athens. They’d only have to deal with scheduling conflicts for about six weeks given how early the college baseball season starts and ends relative to the International League.

Crean was a hire much like Kansas hiring Les Miles. He’s a name who no one else wanted, for a reason.

Christ, why can’t this be put right? Basketball requires so many fewer players and resources (which is how a school like Gonzaga becomes a powerhouse). I’m personally tired of being a washout in the sport. And yeah, baseball needs upgrading too.

It’s ridiculous that we aren’t consistently at the top of the SEC in both basketball teams and baseball as well as oblongball.

I agree. The struggle seems to be some sort of a cart / horse theory or where to penetrate on the vicious circle of mediocrity in order to stop and reverse it. That cart / horse / circle is the combo of athletic department investment and fan interest. They have to go together simultaneously in a symbiotic relationship.

I guess as a starting point, the athletic department’s first job would be to find out WHAT would make fans more interested (aside from just being “better” competitively) and then work like mad to drive in that direction. Give the football big donors a platform—“what can we do to make you and others like you more interested in basketball ? We need your help and advice.” Listen to them and stroke their egos. But there’s no way it gets done without some relatively bold moves and a degree of risk by the athletic department– what is needed spending wise in basketball and baseball will never have the 100% certainty in approval and return that say the IPF and West End zone project had.

I actually don’t think football will displace the track now. I wonder if they can turn Spec Towns into an A+ facility? We desperately need a facilities master plan. You’re right about Foley. Unfortunately, there aren’t good places to build new facilities on campus, which makes the lack of a master plan even more maddening. If it were up to me, I’d move what’s left of the Vet School on South Campus and build a great new stadium there.

I disagree about Foley in that it’s an awesome location and just needs to be built out. Reimagine right field as a student seating area (like Bama and Ole Miss), expand the facility down both lines with either expanded permanent seating or standing room only where temporary bleachers can be added for conference play and tournaments, and build a bigger, better scoreboard out in left. There’s a lot of potential in that area to make for a really cool ballpark without going full MSU. Plus, the Greenhouse is one of the great homefield advantages in the sport come tournament time. Intentionally losing that would be an absolute foul up.

I think that they could close Rutherford from Stegman to Butts Mehre and expand the stadium that way. Baseball is not a revenue sport but it is a lot of fun to take the family to a game there because the tickets are cheap and it is so easy to get in and out when compared to the Braves stadium now, then or forever.

They could if there’s a feeling that adding a second deck is a necessity. But I don’t think we need to be MSU/LSU/A&M and we don’t need the capacity of Baum-Walker (Arkansas) or Swayze (Ole Miss) either.
Foley seats 3,291 right now. Some points of comparison would be Russ Chandler (Tech) at 4,157 and Founders Park (Carolina) at 8,242. Neither have upper decks but use the space they’re afforded to provide a solid atmosphere (Founders is my personal favorite college stadium in the country; it’s perfect as far as I’m concerned). What I think we need is a defined student seating area (Kudzu Hill, below the Greenhouse, which is something Bama did a great job adding to their park), a new scoreboard in left (Foley’s is quite literally the top half of the old 2005 Sanford scoreboard. It needs to be bigger and in view of right field), and just do SOMETHING to fill in down the lines. Preferably they could also add some indoor space for the team, too, as they need more batting cages.
Ultimately, expansion of Foley is just as much as about selling an image of commitment to recruits in the state as it is enhancing the fan and player experience. If they want to dress Rutherford up into a pedestrian causeway with removable barristers on either end for non-gamedays, I think it would be a great idea.

    • Foley is a great ball park that has the oddities baseball fans expect with the short porch in right field. It’s the typical problem we’ve had in facilities. We go with half measures rather than maximizing the benefit of what we have. Extend seating down the lines. Have some general admission seating in left field. Leave Kudzu Hill alone.

well, the silver lining is they werent that good last year with those guys.

UGA basketball is an eternal mystery. Long periods of mediocrity, with an occasional burst of competence, as the flagship university in a state with tons of talent, a dominant alumni base, tons of money, and no real in state competition for said talent (admittedly, out of state schools loot it like they owned it). You’d think such a school would be at a minimum, solid. Fans will show up for a competitive team. The facilities are decent (Cameron Indoor Arena sucks, for example). We havent gotten a top tier guy since Hugh Durham came to town. It’s like we are the Bermuda Triangle.

If we are going cheap on an up and coming dude, I would take a good hard look at the former Georgia Southern coach, who is now at James Madison. He was winning a lot, developed some pretty good players, and you’d figure he knows the area pretty well by now.

“We haven’t gotten a top tier guy since Hugh Durham came to town.” That’s some serious Dawgrading of Tubby Smith right there.

Since Durham, we have gone every route.
Tubby – Group of 5 head coach – successful and left immediately for UK
Jirsa – Tubby’s chief assistant – surprisingly, the 3rd best record in the post-Tubby era when you give Harrick credit for the vacated wins
Harrick – proven head coach – too bad his son was given the ability to teach
Felton – Group of 5 head coach – the tornado gave him one more year
Fox – Group of 5 head coach – great guy … should we have kept him?
Crean – proven head coach – won the press conference and has flamed out even with a future #1 overall pick

Absolutely should have kept Fox, he at least had 2 NCAA appearances. Also won very close to half of his conference games (77-79)…and an overall .551 win percent.

            Won 20 or 20+ games 4 X at UGA….looks like he would be a dream hire now….

I’m not sold on the non-Power 5 route. A good coach is going to use Georgia as a stepping stone. A mediocre to poor coach is going to be lather, rinse, repeat.

If Hayes were successful, he could be here forever.

Had the same thought, kinda reminds me of the “94 (?) homecoming game with Vanderbilt, Vandy did whatever they wanted with the Dawgs that day….trashed them, dominated. The players quit playing for Goff, gave up that day….embarrassing as hell. That is when you REALLY know it is time to make a change..

      • The players didn’t quit on Goff that day. They decided to send a message about the makeup of the Homecoming court. The result was still the same … that was the day I was ok with sending Ray packing. The embarrassing performance a couple of weeks later in Hogtown cemented with me. TBH, Dooley’s loyalty to Goff gave him 1995, but the significant improvement mandate hung over the program’s head like the sword of Damocles.

Oh I know the argument….and I remember the homecoming deal. But they quit that day and Goff was HC at the time. It’s up to him to keep the team together.

And I bet he’s the first to tell anyone the same.

Goff was a DGD IMO, 5 points away from being undefeated in ‘92. But it was that day that I gave up on him.

If Auburn had done what Spurrier did, Goff doesn’t survive 1994.

Baseball needs to make a run this year. They were robbed of a great year last year by Covid. This year, they’re competitive and should make the post-season; so get to a Super Regional and I’ll feel good about the state of things.

Basketball needs to start over and modestly. Obviously you don’t move on it now. You let Crean face-plant one more year to save the money. Then, what you don’t do is hire a re-tread with a name. You find someone who will recruit and develop players who aren’t one-and-dones; who builds a program and not a team; can get buy-in from the players to build towards something. We are going to have to be one of those teams that makes a tourney run every 3-4 years with a team full of upper-classmen punching above their weight as a team. We’re the anti-Kentucky.

On top of that, Brooks needs to be ready to move on hoops fast and have his shit together because Coach Diaz and Coach Bauerle aren’t going to live forever. His predecessor already fucked up on tennis by being a cheapskate and losing nationals to other host sites; he can’t afford the program to slip and those guys could retire anytime.

    • I doubt the baseball team gets to a super-regional this year unless we draw a favorable regional. As long as we don’t go 2 and out in the regionals, this year is a transition year. Stricklin’s fate will be determined over the next few years. He needs to get a team to Omaha.

We are definitely in restart mode on basketball. We are likely headed that way in women’s gymnastics with the female equivalent of Ray Goff.

I hope Brooks has a succession plan for Bauerle, Diaz, Wallace and Haack when they decide they are ready to enjoy retirement.

This has been an exceedingly frustrating season to follow because the talent is obviously there but we haven’t been able to get it all on the same page save for the series against Vandy (go figure). Started the year having to move Webb into the rotation from his closer role for which he was a preseason All-American because 2 presumed starters in Will Childers and Garrett Brown went down in the Fall with TJ surgery. We were already a really young squad, too, as the draft hit us particularly hard last year compared to other squads who lost little to none of their rosters with the shortened draft and COVID provision. Couple that with chronic injuries up and down the lineup (and now both Webb and CJ Smith are done for the year) and it’ll actually be quite an achievement just to make the postseason (of course it won’t be perceived that way by our largely fairweather fanbase).

I’ve always thought that one reason the Richt comparisons hang around with Kirby is the fact that it’s almost unprecedented what UGA did – let a coach go who had that much success (but yes, who had slipped a little) and was still very popular with a lot of the base.

Most big time program coaching chages are pretty obvious at some point and don’t inspire much controversy. I’m thinking maybe Cooper from tOSU is the best comp? Maybe Gus from Auburn now? I don’t know. And throw in that even the most strident Richt haters always admit he’s one of the best men to ever lead any UGA program and you get some lingering feelings.

The fact that the Richt family is universally liked and appreciated by the DawgNation also plays into it.

It was recognized that Kirby Smart is a true generational talent as a recruiter and possibly a great coach. With all the righteous hell given to those who actually run UGA athletics they deserve credit for an inspired decision to can Richt and hire Smart. Of course Richt’s stumbling made it so his firing didn’t look like a total dick move. We’re fortunate that he’s a Georgia man and won’t necessarily turn into a Tubby-type with delusions of grandeur.
A similar coaching situation could be installed with the hiring of Jarvis Jones as BB HC. That plan may be in the works, for as with Kirby it’s so damn obvious. Or not. That would require the powers that be to actually give a shit about basketball.

Maybe UGA can do like Indiana and find a philanthropic $10 million donation to buy out their basketball coach. As for Coach Clappy, well…

Sec Basketball programs are a sideshow act (other than at UK) but it still pays the bills. Good gig for the MBB HCs once they get run off with millions plus buyout dollars. ADs just gotta act like they care. Per Crean, didnt he already pulled in transfers from UVA, Marquette, USCal, so the net roster prior to yesterday’s news & it was only 2? Seems he recovers quickly after a portal entry.

How do you convince boosters that investing in Georgia basketball HELPS the football team both on the recruiting front and with Georgia brand itself.

Doesn’t seem a hard sell to me. Get Kirby to appear at visits, sell the “attack the day” schitck. I would think that there are enough blue chip BB kids that could buy into the “they do football well enough”, let’s ride this thing for a couple years. Side note, they don’t conceptualize 4 years, it’s “fast as possible”. Works both ways and they have the leverage.
