“The vaccine is a competitive advantage.”

Why am I not surprised to learn this?

Two weeks before summer training begins and less than two months before fall camp opens, dozens of college football teams are struggling to vaccinate their athletes. Similar to the country’s regional discrepancy in COVID-19 protocols, the U.S. is a fractured mess as it relates to the vaccine. And that goes for universities as well.

Some, such as Ohio State, Notre Dame and Navy, have at least 90% of their football team vaccinated. Others, like Clemson, Charlotte and Ole Miss, are below the 20% mark. And then there are those like Tennessee, Oregon State and Troy, hovering around 50–60%.

While administrators expect a surge of vaccinations when players return to campus in June, many of them fear that athletes will continue to eschew the shots for some of the same reasons as those in the general population—religious beliefs, conspiracy theories and misplaced guidance from others.

“The low vaccination rates are worrisome,” says one ACC school administrator who asked for anonymity. “I’m battling trying to figure out how to normalize this vaccine.”

This is a bigger deal than you might think, because of the logistics.

Though college-age people often experience little to no ill effects from COVID-19, vaccinations are imperative, NCAA medical experts say. They clear a path back to normalcy. A team reaching enough vaccinations will likely avoid the coronavirus protocols and disruptions that marked the 2020 season.

In fact, officials expect a different set of protocols for those vaccinated and unvaccinated. Players choosing not to vaccinate will find themselves subject to contact-tracing and quarantine rules—the biggest disrupter of 2020—as well as regular testing. Those vaccinated will be exempt from such. In short, COVID-19 outbreaks on or around a team will likely affect only unvaccinated players and staff.

As the article notes, at Clemson, the Tigers are only at a 10% vaccination level.  And the meter is running.

“The two-shot vaccines take six weeks to be fully effective,” says Jeff Dugas, Troy’s team doctor and an orthopedic surgeon in Birmingham who chairs the Sun Belt’s COVID-19 advisory panel. “They need to be vaccinated by mid-June. They’ve got five weeks before they need to have the first shot.”

I have to believe Dabo is going to move heaven and earth to hammer that number.  But what happens if he can’t move the needle sufficiently?  How will that impact Clemson’s approach to the opener with Georgia?  Beats me, but I’ll be watching to see.

That’s okay. Clemson will be free from the plague because of Dabo’s close relationship with the Almighty.

    • Sadly, I believe that type of mindset may have something to do with the lack of urgency on their part. Just a guess tho.

I wanted to throw in something about Dabo’s chicken pox party from last spring, but it was a strain to relate that joke.

Maybe dabo-dabo-dabuhdoo can solve the mysterious positive hgh/steriod testing of clemson players while he talks to the Big Guy in the sky about the 1-9’s vaccine impact on his team.

In 2021…Teams should be forced to play with the players available or forfeit.

FYI – all pubs in Brussels opened last Saturday for outdoor seating for a table of 4 max(been closed since Sept 30,2020)!!! Cops had to use water cannons to break up about 1500 college aged rule violators around 1:30am Sunday morning that gathered for massive beer consumption in one of the main plazas (picture north campus tailgating back in the day and Jimmy W. comes rolling up with a water cannon and torching the place with H2O). Can’t wait to see the news tomorrow morning. Shit is going to get real.

    • It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Dabo himself hadn’t gotten vaccinated—he’s got just the right mix of stubbornness, self-satisfaction, and disconnection with the concerns of regular working folks. And if the coach himself won’t get the shot, it’s easy to see their players losing a lot of motivation to do so.

I know some colleges are requiring proof of the vaccination before admissions is allowed. Much like public schools require polio, measles, etc… vaccination proof. You can get around it with the bullshit religious exemption stuff though I’d guess because we can’t offend anyone in this country.

They also don’t have to have the two shot. They can go for the Johnson & Johnson to shorten up the time from vaccination to effectiveness. So the 6 week argument doesn’t hold water.

I believe the six-week period is for your immune system to fully-develop a completely effective response – it is not the immediate silver bullet so many seem to think it is….

See I thought it was 2 weeks until the last shot when the highest effectiveness was reached. So two weeks after the J&J would be just 2 weeks from start to finish while it would be six weeks from the 2 shot vaccine.

Sounds like the Yankees were vaccinated and many already had COVID.

    • I saw that earlier as well. Protocols will not change if the fully vaccinated can still get Covid. They will still need to quarantine and contact trace. Last years rules will still apply across the board.

95% effective means 1 out of 20 not effective… But more marked is the point that it is 99.7% effective at keeping infected people from getting hospitalized…but that is 3 out of 1000. OH NO! I mean, jeez, what fear mongering around this stupid point.

  4. If the conferences are serious about this, there won’t be any of the “we can’t play this week because of a COVID outbreak.” You play the week you’re scheduled to play with those cleared to play or you forfeit.

If you have to start a walk-on at or move a RB or WR to QB, tough.

Agreed. our total points of the game in 2021 should reflect an amount that is equivalent for two games played. So i am thinking Dawgs 105 – vandy 3.

I thought it was a terrible look for them to postpone the game, have their senior day, and then cancel the next weekend.

A positive word for a second. I work closely with the hospitals and there were zero Covid patients in ICU at Athens Regional last week. Also the last number I heard on vaccinations in the system ARMC was at 55% of vaccinated staff and was the leader by a good margin. Every other hospital in the system being under 50%. The vast majority of the college kids don’t fear this thing and if they are healthy they shouldn’t. This will be another instance where the athlete has to make a call that he probably wouldn’t were he not an athlete. I’m vaccinated by the way but there is a lot of mistrust and a lot of conspiracy stuff to untangle.

My daughter taught Labs as a graduate assistant at Georgia Southern last fall. Out of about 100 total students six of them wound up in the hospital with covid. I know a young 20 something that was in the hospital for a week last week. They need to take it more seriously

I gathered all the information I could (talked to doctors both in my family and friends) and made what I thought was the best decision and got my shots. I can understand the reluctance of young healthy athletes but the science points to getting the shot.

The way to motivate those hesitant to get the vaccine is clear – You wont be subject to daily testing and contact tracing. That and peer pressure from teammates. They should make daily life annoying as hell for those that don’t have the shots.

As for peer pressure… “Dont fuck up our season, get the shots” is good place to start.

For getting the vaccine a free pass to Ms Brandee’s Bordello & Boudgie would motivate most players. You know, for getting the shot you get a shot & a shot and a few days later a shot of penicillin.
Ms Brandee’s is still in the planning stage. Until I hire some girls Got Cowdog is pouring drinks and 86Bone and Corch are gonna run it by hand. FrozenDawg is in charge of the ice.

Riiiiight. You keep that TEAM concept in mind lest 86Bone has to remind you that there is a U in CUNT.
May have to draw on FrozenDawg’s connections in the Amish community for a couple of things. Good homemade liquor and some of them Rumspringa gals. Young lasses with a one year turnover. For the ones who don’t wish to return to the Community? There’s always a call for experience in a place like Brandee’s. Of course with their agrarian background I’m sure you could put ’em to use growing corn, which should become a staple of the business if the liquor making goes as planned.
Then after the laws change their expertise could really come in handy on Uncle Got’s Ickiest of the Stickiest venture.
This could evolve into a growing concern. Pun intended.

How infuriating is it going to be when there are significant contributors that have to sit out due to COVID quarantine guidelines because they haven’t been vaccinated? Can you imagine if we had to sit starters against Florida? Please Dawgs get the shot.

What makes clemsons low Vax rate so odd is they had a player contract covid and then have serious long-term problems.

Since not a single otherwise healthy college age human has died of Covid 19 and those that get it are well in 3 days, maybe players have figured out they really don’t need to be vaccinated.

For the most part, you are correct. Example: if it were public knowledge that player A didn’t get the shot and next day Dr. B announced that 100% of the team had the shot, that’s a violation.

Need to have a subscription to read so forgive me if this information is in the public domain – but I really only care about UGA’s vaccination stats.

Where do we rank on the board? Our coaching and medical staff, athletes, and athletic department did such a great job managing their seasons in the face of COVID, I want to assume that we are getting these athletes vaccinated.

    Anyone have insight?

My stepson plays in college, going into his 3rd year after losing his 2nd to Covid, and I tried to tell him to go ahead and get it out of the way…he’s putting it off for the time being. I think he may regret it, especially getting the 2nd shot closer to reporting for summer practice. He has to get it, but right or wrong putting it off is 100% his choice

People are really interesting. We construct our own reality based on life experiences, emotions, etc and will defend it to the death. It’s true of me and everyone else on this blog. That’s why objective science is so critical. Around 40% of the healthcare workers at my hospital have not been vaccinated. I’m a Christian and was vaccinated in December. My wife and kids have been vaccinated. Many African Americans refuse to be vaccinated. Politicizing this is not helpful to anyone. Just get the damn vaccine.
