“When something’s happening, it’s a bad thing.”

Josh and Graham try to pick themselves off the floor after yesterday’s injury news and take a look at what might be in store for Georgia’s defense in the opener.

For now, the one thing I’m hanging my hat on in the wake of Tykee Smith’s injury is that Brini played very well at the STAR against Cincinnati and by all accounts has had a good preseason.  That being said, Clemson’s receivers are on an entirely different level than the Bearcats’ group.

Yes, Georgia can lose the game and still get in the Natty. Guess what? Georgia can lose the game and still get knocked out of the Natty. Isn’t as much riding on this game as people think. More perception on a national level – than anything else.

Thaaaat’s right, Moe. Way too many taters this close and our side of what was the Savannah River. Those shitheads have been full of themselves since 2016. The only way to shut ’em up is for the Dawgs to beat ’em. I don’t want to wait until January for that.

It’s possible, but we lose control and any margin of error with a loss. It’s not over if we lose, but it’s a huge problem. And it can’t help recruiting because although the season doesn’t end with the loss, all positive coverage of Georgia football until the SEC Championship is over. If you think that “underachiever… can’t win it all…” crap is loud now, wait till we lose in Charlotte.

Yep. I’m not so worried about their WRs if their QB is on his back all day.

If we can’t make Uigalelei’s life a living hell with our defensive front, we have no business talking playoffs.

      • That’s basically where I’m at too. We going to get burned some regardless, and we can live with it. But we can’t let him get in a rhythm to consistently move the chains. Gotta get home.

Don’t have the numbers but my perception is that we didn’t get the QB on his back enough against the better teams we played last year. Hope we can do a better job against Clemp son.

Easier said that’s done when they have such a good screen and short passing game. Those WRs are going to eat the secondary’s lunch on a lot of plays. We just have to score more, and really need Kearis and Jermaine at or close to 100% to do it.

It’s not that all is lost, but we’re now officially the true underdog.

Can Brini play as a WR too?

  5. Brini was one of the bright spots at the end of the season last year on defense. Whoever plays the star is going to have his hands full with Ross (if truly healthy). That was going to be true with Smith as well. EVERYONE picks on the player in the star/nickel spot.

Keep their WR’s in front of you avoid the big plays/quick scores and don’t allow the QB to break containment for first downs. Also cover the dam wheel route.

At least the WR loses are not game week allowing Monken to adjust his game plan. Watching Clemson last year you need to spread their defensive out. Using a tight box offense plays into what Venables does best overload a point of attack and get to the QB. JT has to hit the hot reads quickly making them pay when blitzing while avoiding taking a beating. I’ll still worry about the ability to keep his uniform clean until it happens.

Didn’t watch much of Clemson last year. Is DJ a mobile QB?

Notre Damn beat them without Fabio at QB…I’m thinking UGA can too.

DJ went off in that game.

Problem was in the trenches. Etienne had the worst game of his career, and they were missing 3 defensive starters, so ND ran a ton.

QB won’t be Clemson’s issue this year. Beating them requires winning the other 21 matchups consistently.

I think it’s a ruse on our offensive coaches, we’re gonna run it right at’em. I’m not sure they have the horses on D to stop us.

Hopefully run around their D line which is comparable to the Dawg’s stout line. “run it right at ’em.”? There’s a word for that around here. Starts with Man and ends with ball. That’s despicable.

OSU bullied them at the point of attack last year.

Consistently beat them to the edges with alignment and snap count stuff, got Sermon a lot of first-contact with a back 7 guy 4 yards downfield. And then abused their safeties over the top when they started worrying about Sermon or Fields steaming out of the backfield behind one of their tackles.

Especially early/first half. If we try to pound them we will end up giving them too many possessions. It’ll be a game of keep away for us, probably them too. Using the width of the field should help us wear them out for later.

This might as well be a glorified national exhibition game. Neither team is out of it if they lose. Yeah all the margin for error is gone, but who are we kidding? UGA isn’t making the playoff without winning the SEC anyway. Plus we have ZERO business losing to anyone else on our schedule until the SECCG. The result will be overblown either way. We win and the rat poison will flow rampant. Lose and “Same ole Georgia, the sky is falling”. I’m hoping for a great game but not going to be too bent out of shape with the result unless we just take a complete beatdown, which I don’t see happening.

Rat poison is great for recruiting, especially on the heels of a couple disappointing seasons.

But really this team has won huge games and still not won a Natty so I’d be real surprised if anyone starts resting on any laurels until we either take down Bama or win the Natty.

This is where I’m at too. Clemson is a great measuring stick but definitely not the most important game of the season. We will still need to win the sec to make the playoff, so I’d rank the Florida and seccg as more important than Clemson. 11-1 with the 1 being Clemson, we control our playoff destiny. 11-1 with the 1 being Florida and we might not even play in the seccg.

Also totally agree that unless it’s a just a blowout there will be a complete overreaction based on the outcome of the game. Lose and the national view will be “same ole Georgia can’t win big games and beat CFP caliber opponents”. Win and it’ll be “OMG, Georgia is definitely in the playoff!!! They’ll be 12-0 in Atlanta and Alabama better watch out. JT Daniels is the greatest QB ever and a lock for the Heisman!”

Honestly, every SEC Game after Clemson is more important for where UGA wants to be at seasons end…me, I just want to beat Clemson…well, just because, I came of age in the heat of this Rivalry…glad to see it being played again.

Man, it feels like the Apocalypse reading some of these sites this morning! You’d think we already lost to Clem’s-sons. I’d like to point out that when Tykee Smith came out of Highschool, he was ranked by 247/sports as the 47th ranked Safety in the country and a 3-star recruit! He made his mark at WV and turned into a great player. He will be a great player for us, probably. But my point? I hear all of this moaning and groaning that players like Brini, Speed, Lassiter and Ringo (a former 5 star recruit by the way) are having to step up and get ready to play Clemson as though these kids are not even worthy to be on UGA’s team and we’re as good as doomed. These kids are playing at UGA because the guys that recruited them seen their talent and felt they are worthy. Some of these kids may not have gotten all the hooplah when they signed on as recruits, but they’re not pushovers and they’re not walk-ons either. Shoot man, give em a chance and let them prove their worth. I think we’re gonna be just fine. Just my two cents….carry on.

We’re doomed! Advice: Everyone outside of Athens go ahead and take that Monday off. Actually, if you’re serious about ending it all, now is the time. I’m joking, of course, but I still think we lose and then go 2007 on the rest of the schedule.

Bah. Got Sr. and I had a 30 second pity party yesterday afternoon when he read the injury report. My biggest concern about Clemson? That “He Whose Name Cannot Be Spelled” turns out to be the second coming of Cam Newton and UGA can’t get him on the ground.
I’m sticking with my Georgia by two scores prediction, albeit with a little more temerity.
    Anything wearing orange sucks.

I don’t think he’s as mobile as Cam, but he’s going to shrug some of our guys off and deliver strikes. Adam Anderson better wrap up and bring company when he gets into the backfield.

This game is huge for Lanning. Overated? Or destined for stardom. Having Muschamps many years experience against them should be very helpful.
