What’s the opposite of lies, damned lies and statistics?

Georgia’s defense has been otherworldly.  Check these two data points out:

Sometimes the numbers do tell the story.

I’ve watched college football for 60 years and have never seen this over 5 games. It is amazing and I hope we can keep it up but there will be some points scored by the opposing team after the game is out of reach and the freshman are playing.

The fact that Bama is not on that list this year is good news. This D is special.

They’ll be a tough matchup of course, but there are not as fast or physical on D as we are. Good times.

From what I can tell, Bama’s Dline is good but not dominant. Bama’s LBs except for Georgia native Will Anderson, who is terrific, are decent at best. They definitely don’t wreak havoc like Tindall, Dean, and company do. Not even close. If the Dawgs’ OL continues to improve and JT and Pickens are their bad selves when they get back in the starting lineup, I don’t see Bama stopping Monken’s O enough to make the game competitive. I can’t believe I just typed that, but this Georgia team is just destroying folks.

If you’re an opposing OC, what do you do about the Dawgs’ front seven? They shut down your run game and either sack your QB or force him to run for his life. Try rolling him out of the pocket and see what happens. All you have to do to beat Georgia is score about 40 points with your FG kicker and special teams guys. Good luck.

As one of the ESPN guys pointed out, they have so many guys who can win their one-on-ones, there’s no way to keep people in and/or use double teams to keep them out of the backfield. At least, not often enough to matter. I guess someone has to have a decent day against them at some point, somehow. It’s just hard to picture.

It is. A stat I haven’t seen but would like to is the number of negative-yardage plays the Dawgs’ D averages per series. Or how much negative yardage the D averages per series. I know havoc measures that, so maybe I’ve seen the stat without knowing it. How long did it take Arky to have positive yardage? A quarter? That’s just unreal.

In all seriousness, the defense could set an untouchable record this year. SEC offenses are not scoring many points period. Even America’s Favorite Play Caller in Gainesville couldn’t muster more than 13 points this weekend.

The 1 TD was against mostly or all second-teamers. Still counts, of course, but no way Sakerlina gets 7 against the Dawgs’ first team.

Yeah, but we ain’t played nobody!!!!!!!

Fwiw Totally fine with Auburn and Florida being labeled as “nobodies” after we’re done completely demolishing their team and psyche after we play them.

Yeah, but our strength of schedule ratings were all hinged on that epic game on Halloween and then KY says hold my bourbon, lol. How many top 10 teams will we bludgeon this year?

  10. This defense runs to the ball like no defense I’ve ever seen (and, yes, that includes those dominant Bama defenses from the early Saban era). They play fast but not reckless. They are physical and intimidating without being dirty (looking at you, Greater Opelika Cow College). The starters at every level are really good tacklers (to the point of being surprised when someone misses a tackle). They really do like playing together.

They are a pleasure to watch unless you’re on the opposite sideline.

Well, I would think that our WR group wants nothing more to do with our D either…….I’d kinda like to know who hurt Big 0 too.

It’s the fundamental soundness that shines… square shoulders when stringing out an edge rush. And at every level, they break down, wrap up and bring the ball carrier to the ground upon contact.

Totally agree. Saw my first live game in Athens this weekend. Never seen us play defense like that before. Actually, never seen ANY team play D that good.

Alabama was having tackling problems again, for a while, against Ole Miss.

Yeah, they were. I didn’t watch much of that game but saw a couple of missed tackles on Ole Miss’s first drive. The Dawgs’s RBs and TEs should have a big day on December 4.

We have always had pretty good defenses – certainly while Kirby has been on the job – but there is something different about this group. As I was watching yesterday I noticed how sure our tackling is. We wrap up! Why does this seem so much better now than before? I’m no coach, but it looks like to me that our guys 1) know where they are going (i.e., what their assignment is and they follow the plan), and 2) every single one of them is fast. When you know where you’re going, and you get there in a hurry, you’re in a position to wrap up and make a clean tackle. If you miss an assignment and try to recover you end up trying to grab an ankle and hope for the best.

This group is extra special. Those numbers ESPECIALLY eye popping in this time of “it’s all about offense and elite defense is a thing of the past”. Herbie mentioned how they are such a cohesive group in all facets on and off the field. There are a superb mix of size, speed, veteran leadership, and young guys getting vetted in real time game situations. We are being spoiled. When the other team crosses the 50 you’re a little surprised. When they give up a field goal it feels like a failure and when they gave up that trash TD to the chickens, it felt like a catastrophe. I realize this can’t continue at this level forever (can it), but I’m damn sure enjoying the ride. Sooner or later someone will get lucky and score 14 or so points in a game. I suspect that will only piss them off and God help the next team up.

I believe the defense and special teams have scored more than the defense has given up after 5 games. Let’s enjoy it as long as possible.

Just imagine how good they could be if the D had more than 1 all-SEC caliber player? /S

  23. So that’s basically one entire drive—and a long-ish one, relatively speaking, at that—just to score A point.

Make their asses work for it…then make their asses quit.

So, that Clemson defense is pretty darn good too. Fortunately we have an offense to pair with our defense, and they do not.
