SEC Power Poll, Week Eight

Five teams took the week off — it’s bye week bounce time!  Or not, maybe…

  1. Georgia.  I’m still trying to wrap my brain around ‘Bama giving up 88 more points in the same number of conference games than the Dawgs have.
  2. Alabama.  I don’t think this year’s version of the Tide is that much less talented than last year’s so much as it’s not as well coached.
  3. Texas A&M.  Week by week, the Aggies are getting their collective shit together.
  4. Ole Miss.  The Rebs are ranked in the top ten, but is Matt Corral going to survive the regular season?
  5. Kentucky.  No bye week bounce for the ‘Cats, I’m afraid.
  6. Florida.  Didn’t play, but still moved up into a tie for third place in the division.  Who said Mullen can’t coach?
  7. Auburn.  The Tigers host Ole Miss this week (and are favored!), which should make for an interesting meeting.
  8. Tennessee.  After taking a 14-7 lead, does being outscored 45-10 the rest of the way count as a moral victory?  Asking for a friend…
  9. Arkansas.  Beat up an in state cupcake.
  10. LSU.  I don’t want to say the entire team has quit, but there were definitely players Saturday just going through the motions.
  11. Mississippi State.  Once again, Vanderbilt is chicken soup for the mediocre offense’s soul.
  12. South Carolina.  Absolutely putrid offense.
  13. Missouri.  Absolutely putrid defense.
  14. Vanderbilt.  If Missouri and South Carolina had a baby, they’d name it Vandy.

Is it possible that Bama has played against better conference competition than we have? Munson asked me in a dream….

They have, but they also haven’t held teams much below their scoring averages in general:

      Florida: 35.4 (29)
Ole Miss: 41.9 (21) – their best result
      A&M: 29.8 (41)
      Mississippi State: 27.6 (9)
      Tennessee: 37.4 (24)

      That’s an average of -8

For comparison’s sake, here’s Georgia so far:

      South Carolina: 20.9 (13)
      Vanderbilt: 13.3 (0)
      Arkansas: 32.8 (0)
      Auburn: 35.4 (10)
      Kentucky: 28.4 (13)

That’s an average of -15.6 and none is worse than Alabama’s average.

Something everyone keeps forgetting. Uga hasn’t played any real offensive juggernauts. Granted this defense is an amazing defense, but they haven’t been tested by a lane kiffin, or. Mike leach type offense that can light up a scoreboard. And contrary to the rat poison, if bama is hitting on most cylinders they are good for 40+ points on anyone any day. This shaping up to be something to watch moving forward. BTW Georgia by14 against the gators.

Leach’s offense is one of the worst in the SEC this year. Alabama’s offense is really good. It’s not capable of putting 40 points on Georgia this year, though, and what will ultimately decide the SEC championship game is whether or not Georgia’s offense can get to 31. You know, barring turnovers and other oddities that skew scoreboards.

Agree – both Mississippi schools can cause you fits.

Cousin Eddie does his best coaching when he’s not coaching at all! 😂

… so much as it’s not as well coached.

It’s weird, but I’m starting to get the feeling that coaching is the [expletive deleted] for which Nick no longer has any time. Can that even be possible?

Nothing changed this past weekend, but change cometh:
    1) DAWGS
    2) Bama
    3) Kentucky
    4) Ole Miss
    5) Auburn

Ol’ Miss/Auburn may break the scoreboard. I think it’s funny when, after both the Arkansas and UT games, Lane said something like, “Thanks to out defense we were able to pull this out.” He was a missed 2 point conversion and a Reggie Ball moment away from losing both games. Defense my ass. There isn’t going to be a high enough over to make the under look like a reasonable bet.
