First thoughts on the SECCG

I’ve looked at stats, read beat writers’ takes, checked game film and after all that, it’s coming down to three things for me.

Bryce Young’s feet.  If you haven’t looked at the stats from the Iron Bowl, you might want to, because they’re pretty astonishing.  Auburn’s defense did a great job of bottling Young up.  His 110.25 passer rating was easily the worst of the season for him and being sacked seven times led to him rushing the ball 11 times for minus-23 yards.  He moves around, but prefers to throw the ball rather than take off running with it.  I wonder if there will be a greater emphasis on calling RPO plays where he does in fact run more than we’ve seen to take pressure off a shaky o-line and a precarious running back situation.  Remember, he did pull the Iron Bowl out when he had to, but if he goes 25/51 Saturday, I like Georgia’s chances a lot.

Take a look at something Bill Connelly ($$) posted yesterday:

One key: Bryce Young’s sack rate. After averaging 42.7 points per game against its first six power conference opponents, Alabama averaged only 24.0 points (in regulation) against LSU, Arkansas and Auburn. Opponents are doing a better job of taking away quarterback Bryce Young’s quickest reads and making him freeze a bit: Young went from taking sacks on 5.6% of his dropbacks and throwing 30.3% of his passes at or behind the line to 9.9% and 18.8%, respectively. He’s completing more downfield passes, but at a price.

Georgia has the best defense in the country. The Dawgs harass quarterbacks without blitzing (ninth in sack rate, 80th in blitzes per dropback) and swallow up short passes. Auburn held Young to 4.9 yards per dropback last week, and Georgia’s pass defense is quite a bit better than Auburn’s. Can the Tide make enough plays to keep up?

If they can’t run the ball with at least some effectiveness, my answer is no.

Georgia’s offense staying out of 3rd downs.  In conference play, Georgia hasn’t been bad converting third downs, but they’re nowhere near being in Alabama’s class in that regard.  (Over the course of the entire season, ‘Bama is second nationally.)  The reason we haven’t noticed is because, under Todd Monken, Georgia has been fabulous staying out of third down situations.  The Dawgs, in fact, have taken the fewest third down snaps in the country.  Third down has been Stetson’s kryptonite, as reflected by his passer ratings by downs:  188.78 on first; 218.08 on second; and 128.35 on third.  If Alabama’s defense proves capable of forcing Georgia to take more third down snaps, I’m afraid we’re gonna notice.  For them to succeed in that, though, I think they’re going to have to come up with a way to contain Brock Bowers without compromising their defense in other facets.  They’re the second-best defense Georgia faces this season and I think they’ll try to scheme on that side in much the same way that Clemson did.

Intangibles.  Each team carries their own set into the game.  For Alabama, it’s dealing with the reality that it’s the underdog in a championship game it has to win to make the CFP field.  That’s alien territory for that program.  Saban and his players may seem calm and businesslike in their public statements, but I find it hard to believe there isn’t at least some level of anxiety, especially after that narrow Iron Bowl escape, as they prepare for Saturday.  Still, this is Saban, the GOAT, a man who’s certainly been around the block a few times before.  If Alabama goes down, it won’t be due to lack of preparation.

On Georgia’s side, we all know what that is, what Seth Emerson ($$) refers to as the “got to see it to believe it” factor.  I was there for the 2012 and 2018 SECCGs and the 2017 national championship game, and the common thread in all three was that the Dawgs couldn’t hold respectable leads in any of them.  Kirby may swear up and down that the past isn’t the present, but you can’t convince me that every player and every coach on this team hasn’t thought at least a little bit about the recent postseason history between these two teams.  What does give me hope this go ’round — a lot of hope, in fact — is that Smart has done a fabulous job of keeping this team focused and on an even keel from the opening kickoff in Charlotte through victory formation at Georgia Tech.  He’s got the weapons.  He’s just got to make sure his team finishes what it starts.

  2. Great analysis…I’m one of the homers that buys into this is a different team than what we’ve seen in the past, and for me that’s where my confidence stems from. On all sides of the ball, each unit executes their roles. Regardless of the upcoming opponent, the team silenced the “noise” and just approached every single game each Sat in a meticulous business like fashion. I’ve beat it like a drum all season, but this team just goes out and takes care of business…and they will do it again this Sat in the Atl.

Couldn’t agree more, frozendawg. I love how Jordan Davis responded when asked about playing Alabama. He said (paraphrase) yeah, we respect them, they’re a good team, and all that, but they’re just the next team up — which, of course, as we all know now, couldn’t be more true than this season. ‘Bama is 112th out of 130 FBS teams in sacks given up, and is ranked 77th (150 yds. per game) in rushing. Davis also stated (again) what most everyone seems to be forgetting or just plain ignoring about this team: they play to a standard, and that standard is themselves!! Seems to have worked so far, huh?? I also agree with ASEF below. This game will look very similar to every other game we’ve played this year (save Clemson) at the end of the day. Dawgs win big.

The match-up here stinks for Bama. The best front 7 Kirby’s put together at Georgia against the weakest offensive line Saban’s fielded at Bama.

Bama won’t be able to block half its plays. And you can’t run an offense when you’re backfield is getting blown up half the time.

    Going to be a rout.

I’ve see us fold like a cheap lawn chair too many times to not be worried. Going back to my sophomore year in 1985 when Mike Shula lead them back in less than a minute to the 2012 and 2018 SECCGs and the 2017 NC game, I’ve been there in person to witness us snatch defeat from the jaws of victory too many times. We need to get over the Bama hump once and for all!

Go to MunsonVault.com/Highlights By Season/1976 for the rest of the highlights from that ’76 game. I was trying to get my new business off the ground, and had to work Saturdays in 1976, but I sure did hate missing that Bama beatdown.

Well, I was in B’ham when Pulpwood ran over their ass, and I was asking why Mike Patrick was talking about Britney Spears when Stafford dropped a dime on their ass in Tuscaloosa.

There is no “Bama hump”. They won the last few but we’ve won as well. And this Saturday, the better team will win, and that time will be wearing red and black.

While I’m cautiously optimistic, the victories you reference came over a decade or two ago. Throw the 2008 and 2015 Bama games into the mix and you can see why I may not be as cocky/confident as some. I do believe that if we can get over the Bama hump, it will be a watershed moment that puts us on a roll far beyond this year.

IF you don’t think we’ve played Bama toe to toe the last two meetings in ATL, I can’ help you.

IF you think this Bama team is anywhere near as good as those last two..same thing.

I’ve attended the past 5 games when we’ve played Bama on the road, in the Dome and in Athens. Nowhere above do I say we don;t have a good chance. We have played them toe to toe until the 3Q, last 2 minutes, etc only to come up short each time. I agree this Dawg team matches up well against them, but until we get over the hump of playing them a full game and winning, there’s always pause for concern. Once we get past that stigma, I think this program will really kick it into high gear for many years to come ala Bama.

From an internal review, two minor obstacles that Kirby has overcome during the season but Saban will exploit.
    1) Ringo is a liability. As the season advanced and teams began to exploit the corner, Kirby would roll Brini or Smith to assist and crisis averted. Saban/Golding will work this to their advantage.
    2) Bennett still has the occasional wackiness. Crazy ass throws either under or over thrown, the occasional batted ball & in lieu of stepping up in the pocket is flushed to rolling. Again, Saban/Golding will exploit this. Pressure will force Bennett to make plays or not. Hopefully not turnovers. And Saban/Golding know they don’t have to rush the 5-9 QB, just hold the line and get hands up.
I’m not so concerned about Bama beating UGA….but UGA beating itself.

Kirby is the new Saban; UGA is the new Bama. Saturday should prove that. One thing I do know for a fact is that if we beat Bama we “will” win it all. I don’t see any of the playoff teams beating us, even Michigan. Harbaugh can’t stand in Kirby’s shadow, much less beat him. Cincy? They will find this a much different team than the one they played in the bowl game.

If I was Bama, I’d be thinking I have to throw the ball to win. The million dollar question is whether they can hold up long enough with our pass rush. Bring the pepto because I think we are going to give up a play or two. And I’m making Stetson show he can beat us throwing the ball 30-40 times, so it’s up to Stetson to play within himself. But if we get to 30 points, I like our chances.

I don’t know that it’s ride-or-die with Stetson. If we’re forced into a shootout or playing from behind a couple of scores, we have a dude on the bench who can sling it. He IS an option.

I think JT’s lack of mobility this year is what’s keeping him on the bench. If he plays look for Bama to go cover zero and send the house.

I’m not at practice so it’s just my guess. Monken and Kirby have been looking to this game all season. I believe the decision was made early season and they’ve been grooming Bennett for this game. Monken and the players see in practice what we don’t. Monken is playing the guy who he believes gives us the best chance. You can tell the players trust Bennett and the defense knows it’s their job to have his back when called to do so.
Team leadership and uber talented players buying in makes this team very special,

Monken’s ability to see the entire chess board will pay dividends. I hope I’m wrong, but it may take us late 1st quarter to early 2nd quarter to settle down and start effectively move the ball against Bama.

But ultimately, that continuity you referenced wins the game for GA…the team trusts Stetson, and the senior leadership with guys like Jordan Davis calms the team so they remain focused on executing their individual roles.

Excellent points on the game to come. With GA #1 and AL the underdog, this truly is uncharted territory. That said, Dawgs have been so consistent and dominant, I’m much less Munson-ish for an SEC Championship with the Dawgs than I ever have been.

  10. If you removed the logo from the helmet and watched Bama this year, you would think this is a 34-13 victory for the Dawgs. If it’s low scoring, then that means we puckered up on offense and we are playing into Bama’s hands. Ringo is a weak link and we can’t let him get exploited which will happen at least once or twice, so low scoring on our side is opening up for momentum swings with big plays on their side and playing not to lose will mean losing. I expect to see 2-3 TEs on the field and exploiting mismatches with them peeling off and also setting up James Cook for a big game. First quarter is going to be huge…I legit think the Dawgs have a chance to open up 14-0, but if they get stoned trying to run up the middle predictably, then that goes out the window. I have faith in Monken and I think/hope he has some good stuff dialed up. A lot of missed opps on great plays called by him due to inaccuracy by Bennett and I think he’s been looking forward to redemption here…if we hit those last year that game is very different, I think he makes it count this year. Further, I really hope to see Cine lower the boom on Metchie on this lazy deep crossing routes he gets away with on 3rd downs all season.

    Bama’s Run Defense
Young hitting the home run ball to Williams

Bama isn’t the typical Bama machine this year, but that run defense is salty and we’ve struggled to run early on teams with far less talent and scheme behind them. I’m not sure what our season average is as far as first half run production is concerned, but it can’t be good.

Williams is the bailout for Young. Young likes to buy time, scramble, and hit run on deep crossers or straight up go routes. I like our front 7 to get home, but I think this is a low scoring game, and getting hit with one home run ball could mean the difference in the game.

I see the following as Alabama’s path to victory barring Georgia just getting psyched out from seeing crimson on the field or playing their first bad game of the season. It’s pretty similar to what the senators outlined:

    1) can Bryce Young buy enough time with his feet to avoid our pass rush and hit a couple big plays to metchie and Jameson. Most importantly they are going to have to score more points against this defense than ANYONE has all year. This team had negative rushing yardage in the first half against Auburn and 6 total rushing yards against LSU. If Robinson is banged up…… well, I like our chances to shut down the ground game. If bama scores 17, I really like our chances.

    2) will Anderson just goes off. In addition, their defense takes away our running game and forces stetson to beat them with his arm. Fwiw, not sure if it would have mattered but I thought our running game was effective in Tuscaloosa last year and monken abandoned it too early even with the second half offensive explosion from bama.

I put the chances of 1 and 2 both occuring at around 20%, which leads me to my next and final point.

Anyone who’s followed my posting history knows I’m consistently one of the more pessimistic posters on this board. That being said, Georgia wins and wins comfortably Saturday, I’ll go ahead and say by two tds at least. There I said it, you heard it here first.

The margin of victory against our 4 common opponents with Alabama is not a mirage. We are the better team. The reasons we’re better (elite defense, physical style of play) travel well and you’re going to see it in the 13th installment of “Georgia ain’t played nobody in 2021” Saturday evening. Dawgs roll and go Dawgs!!!!

I saw somebody (maybe Graham?) post something on Twitter this morning. It was a interview with Reece Davis from October talking about when little brother finally beats big brother it can be like a dam breaking. There is a lot of pent-up frustration that Georgia might now be ready to release over Alabama. And when it is released, it might be like a tidal wave. That’s what’s giving me hope today.

If I were Bama, I’d go after Ringo (others here have noted the same) and blitz the hell out of Bennett. That may not be enough but it’s the most obvious path to success they have. If Ringo plays up to his teammates’ standard and the OL limits pressure, then I really like our chances. If not, it’s going to be a sphincter puckering few hours.

        He’s probably the lowest-graded corner… but he ain’t a huge liability.

I think (and hope) Young will be doing a lot of running, much of it unintentionally. I won’t be surprised if we deal up even more pressure than usual with different fronts, shifts, stunts, blitzes, and pass rushers coming from different angles. We’re good at that, lightening fast, and we’ve had extra time to prepare. Plus, bama’s running game is questionable to say the least.

Young IS bama’s offense and I hope we throw the kitchen sink at him.

      20 years.

Meanwhile, Auburn DBs were literally tackling receivers mid-route.

I think the SEC is tired of being looked at as Bama and 13 Coattail Riders. We’ll see some officiating idiocy Saturday, because SEC Refs Are Incompetent, and there’s a 50% chance some of the shrapnel hits Georgia. But if there’s a bias in officiating Saturday, it probably tilts Georgia’s way.

Sure, it was marginal in 2017, which is the game Georgia was screwed out of, but they were still better. The fact that Georgia outplayed them for most of the game when they weren’t as good suggests to me that they’ll be fine now that they are actually better than Bama.

Everyone talks about Bowers being the key, like stopping him stops our offense. I hope Bama focuses on stopping Bowers (or any one player). If they do, I suspect the Big 0 will catch some huge passes. And if they take the wheel route away from Cook, look for McConkey to break open. This offense has plenty of weapons and Monken knows how to use them. Plus, after Bama shuts down our running game in the first half, look for Zeus, Cook and McIntosh to pile up the yards in the second half.

It will be a close game in the first half but Dawgs pull away comfortably in the second half for a convincing win.

Every time you bring up Stetson and third down, I gets skeered.

That says a lot about what Monken has done for Stetson. SB is def better when he’s surprising you. Teams don’t know what’s coming and there are so many weapons. If they get to third down where options are limited, Stetson’s talent limitations are exacerbated. I understand third down has that general effect on every team, but our success rate indicates it may affect SBIV a little more. Hopefully though it’s just a small sample size! 😁

  23. Monken has proven he understands the effect of balance in the offense. Anderson moves around, so we can’t just scheme away from him, but he can’t stop Zeus, Cook, Bowers AND Stetson simultaneously. Pod better be “on” as I think Red Zone scoring is going to be tough early. But we’re 2 TDs better. They may score late to beat the spread while we take a knee and the trophy.

For the most part, this group of kids have no scar tissue from 2017 and 2018. Last year was fluky all around. This group believes in themselves and what they’re doing. Opportunity, not fear, is what they’ll see. GATA.

P.S. Bootleg Stetson early. He gets amped and needs to get into the physical side to settle in. I don’t expect trickeration or taking deep shots early, but some old fashion man-ball just to test the waters.

I’m in full Munson mode. I want to win this game like no other, but…
One thing the College Football Nerds pointed out was that we’re great at stopping the run, but Bama hasn’t had a run game the past couple of weeks and still won. So it probably benefits Bama to dump the run game and use more screens, quick hits to flats, etc., to simulate a run game.
We can totally do this, but the thing that worries me is Saban is so tough to beat after a loss. Yes, Bama won the Iron Bowl, but do you seriously think Saban didn’t take his OC and DC after the game and say “fix this shit!”? I just have to think they will give us some new stuff to worry about.

All I know is that I have received my brand new Chuck Taylor Custom Converse All Stars and they are BEAUTIFUL! Red canvas hi-tops with black tongue and black laces. The Power G logo on the outside ankle and “GEORGIA” at the top of the tongue. White toes and red and black trim on the rubber. Of course they also feature the obligatory “FTMF” embroidered on the heels. (Thanks Senator!)

Wearing these? ALABAMA IS DOOMED! You’re welcome. 🙂

GoDawg, it’s good you have two of those shoes…

One to shit in and the other to cover it up with.

I got married the first time in blue chuck’s with red laces, put my hair in a ponytail for the vows (A Good Feelin To Know by Poco) in a blue cowboy shirt with yella roses and my truck keys on a a key clip ring!

  29. After digging into the advanced stats, reading professional analysis, and crunching all the numbers, my take on this game:

    Dawgs 70 – Bama 0.

    On the way to 15-0.

    This is our fucking year.

    GO DAWGS!

Again, the X-factor for me in this game is what each team believes about themselves.

I think Bama (players, not Saban) may tend to believe they can fool around in the first half of games and then just will themselves to a win in the second half. And they probably think Georgia is over-rated.

I think the Dawgs probably have a huge chip on their collective shoulder and a sour taste in their mouths. And I also think they’ve been so “business like” in their wins this year because, in the team’s mind, it’s all just been a dress rehearsal for this weekend.

Bama thinks they can loaf and pull it out in the end. Georgia knows they need to get Bama on their backs and put their knee in Bama’s neck for 60 straight minutes. And not only does Georgia know this is what they need to do —— it’s the year they’re built to do it.

We’re totally ready to out-man the Tide. The tell will be how thrilled the Dawgs look when they realize they’ve broken Bama’s will. Don’t know when it will happen. But we’ll all see it. Georgia D jumping around looking like they’re about to run through a brick wall, waiting for the snap, and Bama’s OL huffing and puffing looking like “how much more of this do we have to take?”

    Dawgs on top, 42-24.

    • Result was almost the exact opposite of what I expected. Had some flashes of greatness (Hello, Brock Bowers!) on offense, but just too inconsistent to keep up with a legit opposing offense.

I do wonder if things might be different if we play them again…

But I’m not so sure now, obviously.

Want to guarantee a win? Put Davis and Carter in at the same time instead of alternating them. Bama would need 6 offensive linemen just to handle those two.

Younger players carry much less baggage than older fans who see seasons run together. Most of these guys have only experienced last season’s regular season loss…..not the gut wrenchers that have no bearing on a horde of new players on both sides who happen to wear the same jerseys.

If it exists for you, think about the time before you were a Dawg fan. I didn’t become a Dawg until the year 2000. I was never emotionally invested in anything that happened before that time. Jasper Sanks’s non-fumble ? I watched that last week when it came up, and although I’m sure I had seen it pre Youtube days on a pregame or something, the play / the bad call / the issue in question was kind of all a new experience for me. South Carolina in 2000 ? I was upset Quincy threw 5 picks, but held no real element of humiliation about them sucking for so long. Because it was all new to me. Hell, I was kind of shocked Donnan got fired.

Brock Bowers was playing freshman high school football in California when Georgia lost the national championship. Just a few years is another lifetime for someone 18-22.

If it goes down to that level? Well, the Dawgs have more quality depth on D and can afford to lose a player to ejection more than the Gumps. Also the Dawgs have a high quality backup QB. Bama? Not so much.
      Have a nice daaaaay!

  34. Dawg LBs are going to dominate Saturday. 3 or 4 guys up front will tie up 5 OL and the LBs will run wild. Robinson is going to get handled and Bama will become one-dimensional. Enjoy Nakobe Dean Saturday, guys n gals.
