Looking at that list, I suspect that a new person just wanted to show off what he or she could remember form the code book. All the charges might be technically valid, but man, Barney Fife would be so damn proud.

Underage? Never heard of it back then or going to jail for minor traffic violations. We’ve become a fascist and/or police society.

Drinking and driving is a bad call. If it’s really .02 that got him it’s some bad luck but still the law. I’m willing to call it a bad judgment call and remember the dumb things I did in college that thankfully never happened near the cops.
The other littany of charges…If I was Kirby I’d make his punishment be standing in front of the team and saying “I was driving without a license. I didn’t use my turn signal or maintain my lane. I didn’t have my lights on. I was holding my cell phone. I’m an athlete in Athens. I was practically begging the cops to take me to jail. Don’t be a dummy like me.”
Get up early for a month and run stairs. See you on the flip side.

Years ago early in college, I got stopped by a DUI checkpoint on College Station Rd. while drunk as hell with weed and a bong in the car. When the cop got to my window my ass said, “Hello officer! How are you!? Beautiful night tonight!”. He didn’t say anything, took my license, walked to the back of my car, looked at my license plate, gave my license back, and let me go. Can’t imagine how that would’ve turned out if I were a football player.

As someone who both represents citizens and cops I have real world experience/insight as to what “probably” happened here. Cops say that they can almost always place multiple charges on defendants but they only do it when someone either is an ass or just keeps talking. Lt. Barton a legend in CCPD , use to say” I can keep writing tickets as long as an asshole can keep talking” Don’t know but a reasonable hypothesis. Free legal advise here…..STFU.

If the officer had stopped with DUI, I would agree with you, but this reeks of “let’s make an example out of this football player, and it’s time once again to show who’s boss in Athens.” DUI is a serious offense and should be treated as such; the problem, as I have heard it from recent students and parents, is that UGAPD and ACCPD seem to think all students are bad in general and need to controlled. My husband likes to say that I look for rules to follow, but if the Athens police had been like they are today when I was there, I have this strange feeling I might have seen the inside of a police car, and I hazard a guess that pretty much everyone who comments on the Senator’s blog would have experienced the same.

The campus cops at UGA were totally different back in the 60’s. I can’t remember even seeing one. This was when the SDS was trying to blow up the ROTC Building. Due to the continuing embarrassment of the 18 years not being able to drink but being being drafted Georgia actually dropped the age to 18. I had two buds drafted out of my class for low grades.
Also the Pandora for my 69 class had as it’s two last pages a facsimile of a diploma on one page and a draft notice on the other. Wild times to be alive. The draft card reclass physical at the Ponce induction center was like a UGA class reunion.

Yea well, from 66-69 they took 100,000 a year who didn’t meet basic military requirements to make up for those deferments. “Project 100,000, also known as McNamara’s 100,000, McNamara’s Folly, McNamara’s Morons, and McNamara’s Misfits, was a controversial 1960s program by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) to recruit soldiers who would previously have been below military mental or medical standards. Project 100,000 was initiated by Defense Secretary Robert McNamara in October 1966 to meet the escalating manpower requirements of the American government’s involvement in the Vietnam War. According to Hamilton Gregory, author of the book McNamara’s Folly: The Use of Low-IQ Troops in the Vietnam War, inductees of the project died at higher rates[1] than other Americans serving in Vietnam and following their service had lower incomes and higher rates of divorce than their non-veteran counterparts. The project was ended in December 1971[3] and has been the subject of controversy, especially during the manpower shortages of the Iraq War.”

I84, in 1986 I had an E-6 KP Pusher with a CIB and First Cav combat patch working in my chow hall. After nearly 19 years the yankee Army decided he was out. My First Sergeant explained to me that the E-6 was one of McNamara’s 100,000.
“He’s a shithead, sir, but he was a shithead when the Army drafted him and sent him to the ‘Nam. He’s hungover every morning when he arrives at 0400, but he’s here every day. He’s earned a full retirement.”
I brought said E-6 up on some bogus serious charges and a compliant JAG officer continually delayed proceedings until the Staff Sergeant reached twenty years. I then dismissed charges.
I ran into this retiree a couple years later off post. He gave me a bear hug and a thank you as he had no idea why he was arrested until the First Sergeant explained to him at his retirement.
1st Sgt Tom Hansen was a good man.

69D – I’m not far behind you! I had a friend who was drafted while going to UGA and he was close to graduating. He lacked one PE class. When he got back from service, several years later, he called some office at GA and he told them he lacked one credit in PE because he went into the military. Someone told him he would get credit for the PE since he went into the service and graduated him over the phone!

Yep, we got 4 hours of PE and 4 hours of military science. The GED was devised during WW2 as a means for military personnel to get a secondary credential so they could use the post-secondary benefits of the GI Bill.
