Clocking it

Dennis Dodd blithely asserts that the new clock rules haven’t negatively impacted college football much at all this season.  Former UT offensive coordinator/current USF head coach Alex Golish suggests things are more nuanced than that, at least with regard to one aspect of the game.

“It stands to reason that you’ll have fewer possessions …,” Golesh said. “The saving of timeouts at the end of the game, that is what has become more critical. I think not wasting timeouts is probably the main thing I’ve gotten out of the new clock rule more than anything else.

“The games seem to be about the same length … The bottom line is the value of possessions has gone up because there are fewer of them.”

Time out management is just the most obvious aspect of a reduction in possessions.  I suspect there are a host of other strategic issues that head coaches, at least the savvy ones, are already gaming out.

If you want to get more plays in then you have to pass more often.

  2. What else do you expect from someone who writes for the worst offender regarding who really benefits from the clock rules? The clock rules are affecting the game, but what’s really affecting the game is the number of additional TV timeouts they are jamming down our collective throats in the stadium.

My take is you don’t risk wasting a play on a low percentage long throw that will put you behind the chains. You need to string together first downs the hard way…Run the ball and short, high percentage throws..and having someone like Bowers that can manufacture yards after the catch.
I know you have to throw it deep some..to keep the D honest. But I think you have to nurse almost every single possession into points..(in a tight game).
And maybe the networks will consider passing a new rule giving 4 time outs per half.

Gonna be a lot of midfield “cramps” in the 4th quarter. Which is OK with the money grubbing asses, another chance to “step aside” and run a few commercials.

So wait. He admits that there are fewer possessions, but the games are “about the same length”. Talk about shrinkflation.
