Extra effort

This is beautiful.

I imagine he’s in line for some coaching praise this week.

First thought on the opener

In the end, it was a 41-point victory that only Kirby Smart could love ($$).

“I’m never going to apologize for a win,” Smart said. “I’m ecstatic. We have a lot to work on, though.”

Yep.  Just how he likes it.

I’m pretty philosophical about the result.  As much talk as there’s been about complacency, let’s face it — getting up for UT-Martin on ESPN+ ain’t like getting up for Oregon on national television.  So, I’m not exactly tearing my hair out over what I watched last night.

There was one play, though, that had me incandescent with rage at the time.  I’m still smoldering a little about it this morning ($$).

Indeed, Beck didn’t have the benefit of short fields. Nor did he have the benefit of a running game: Georgia’s vaunted offensive line kept getting stoned on run plays, most glaringly a run inside the middle in the final 30 seconds of the half. Lacking a timeout, Georgia had to quickly spike the ball, and then threw two incompletions before settling for a field goal, an unsatisfying way to finish the half. In the old days, during Bobo’s first stint as Georgia’s offensive coordinator, he would have talked after the game about the call, but now Smart is the one explaining it, and he indicated it came because of how the goal-line offense had performed in camp.

“That’s frustrating,” Smart said. “We’ve been really good in that situation.”

When it happened, I wondered if Beck had checked into it, because I had a hard time believing a coach would call a running play with no timeouts and only 15 seconds left in the half.  If Kirby hadn’t said that, I’d probably still be wondering about it.  It was a too cute by half decision somewhat reminiscent of that infamous Bobo play call against Clemson South Carolina in 2014 (although at least this time UGA converted the field goal).

I am no Kirby Smart, no coaching savant, but you can’t call that in that setting.  It basically blew up any chance for a touchdown there.  I guess it goes to show that nobody’s perfect.

I hope he’s gotten manball out of his system after that.

Living well is the best revenge.

Like it or not, it’s already the biggest story of the holiday weekend.

This was finally the big moment of truth for new Colorado football coach Deion Sanders. Right here in the 100-degree heat of Texas after nine months of hype.

And he told you so.

He told everybody.

“Do you believe now?” Sanders asked reporters after his team beat No. 16 TCU Saturday 45-42. “Huh?”

It’s impossible not to after what happened here Saturday in front of a national television audience and a record crowd of 53,294 at Amon G. Carter Stadium. It was Sanders’ first game as Colorado’s coach after he brought in 68 scholarship newcomers to replace most of last year’s team, which finished 1-11. The Buffaloes also were 20½-point underdogs against a team that played in the national title game last season.

Colorado’s already matched their win total from last season.  Sanders has every right to gloat.

Assuming the opener wasn’t just a flash in the pan and the Buffs go on to win, say, five games this season, I’ll be curious to see if his stripping the house to the studs approach to his roster rebuild is emulated elsewhere.  Knowing what I know about college football, my guess is yes.

The bonus will be the first time someone taking that course of action tries to justify it by saying he’s doing it for the kids.  But you know that’s coming, too.

Your Daily Gator lacks patience.

After Florida’s listless 24-11 defeat at the hands of the Utes, the fan base’s reaction to Billy Napier’s tenure is about what you’d expect.

“I’d literally fire Billy Napier at halftime lol this is hilarious,” another said.

“Time to fire billy Napier. Them boys didn’t come ready to play,” another added.

“If you’re Florida, do you fire Billy Napier tomorrow or wait for him to lose to Tennessee?” another asked.

Yeah, that’s going well.

Musical palate cleanser, wastin’ away edition

Had a few requests for this

Jimmy Buffett, the singer, songwriter, author, sailor and entrepreneur whose roguish brand of island escapism on hits like “Margaritaville” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise” made him something of a latter-day folk hero, especially among his devoted following of so-called Parrot Heads, died on Friday. He was 76.

His death was announced in a statement on his website. It did not say where he died or specify a cause. Mr. Buffett had rescheduled a series of concerts this spring, saying he had been hospitalized, although he offered no details.

Peopled with pirates, smugglers, beach bums and barflies, Mr. Buffett’s genial, self-deprecating songs conjured a world of sun, salt water and nonstop parties animated by the calypso country-rock of his limber Coral Reefer Band. His live shows abounded with singalong anthems and festive tropical iconography, making him a perennial draw on the summer concert circuit, where he built an ardent fan base akin to the Grateful Dead’s Deadheads.

I am not a Parrot Head, but it’s a mathematical likelihood that some of the readership here is.  So this one’s for y’all.

RIP, man.  I’m sure more than a few margaritas are being hoisted this weekend in your honor.
