“If guys want security in their position, they need to play well…”

And away we go.

There is growing buzz around the Alabama football program that Tyler Buchner may replace Jalen Milroe as starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide’s Week 3 game against South Florida, reports Bama247 in an exclusive VIP post. The Notre Dame transfer would be taking over after Milroe started the first two games of the season.

If that doesn’t work, I wonder what Plan C is.

Envy and jealousy, Mehki Mews edition

You know Mark Schlabach had fun with this part:

Mews’ early success isn’t surprising to his teammates, who have been raving about him since last season. He made such an impact on the scout-team offense that offensive coordinator Mike Bobo dubbed him “Waffle House” because he was always open in practice. On many days, Mews scattered and diced Georgia’s highly regarded defense, which struggled to smother and cover him.

Geoff Collins is jealous.

Across the SEC, Bill Connelly edition

Some random bits on tomorrow’s games ($$) for you to ponder…

First, this from his take on the LSU-Mississippi State game:

This doesn’t seem like an amazing matchup for the MSU defense, but the good news is that nothing’s a particularly good matchup for the LSU defense yet. The Tigers have allowed 25.3 more points through two games than SP+ projected. They rank 97th in success rate allowed and 117th in yards allowed per dropback, and despite having Harold Perkins Jr. on their roster, they have one sack in two games. Grambling gained at least 69 yards on each of the first three drives of last week’s game before LSU adapted. If the Tigers still have hopes of making an SEC title or College Football Playoff run, they probably can’t afford a slow start like that in Starkville.

Yeesh.  I think LSU prevails, but it wouldn’t be a stretch to see the Bulldogs cover the 10.5-point spread.

As for the Tennessee-Florida game, here’s an interesting stat:  “… the Gators’ defense has allowed just 382 total yards in two games, 70 of which came on the first play of the season.”

Can the Gators turn the game into a slog?  If so, they’ve got a chance for the upset.

Finally, Missouri hosts a ranked Kansas State team at noon.  Mizzou sounds just like what you’d expect Mizzou to sound like.

Mizzou’s 23-19 win over Middle Tennessee last week wasn’t particularly inspiring. The Tigers controlled matters from an efficiency standpoint, but they were completely unable to create big plays and easy points — two weeks in, they rank 31st in success rate, but they made only five plays of 20-plus yards against the two weakest opponents on the schedule, South Dakota and MTSU. Confidence lacks, and it’s bled into decision-making: Eliah Drinkwitz’s Tigers are also one of just four teams not to have attempted a fourth down conversion.

They’re 2-0, though, and they could give themselves a huge confidence boost while derailing a former rival’s trajectory. The defense has thus far looked like a top-25 unit again…

This one will be a slog, no ifs about it.

What’s everyone’s take on these three games?

Money down

Mr. Evans likes the Dawgs to cover tomorrow.

UGA -27.5 vs Sakerlina Kirby is a monster at home ATS vs. SEC teams, and especially against shitty ones — bowl game aside, USCe was not very good last season either, and they’re a lot worse this year. I’m sure Smart’s tired of hearing nattering about how UGA looks different this year; have the Dawgs fallen off?

Well, the Bulldogs can finally wake up and start the season. Numbers say they will. Long day for Rattler, even worse for very soft USC DL and OL lines.

UGA -29.32

Delivered without a trace of Georgia snark.  The boy is serious here.

This is the topper to Seth Emerson’s Mailbag ($$):

“Georgia football mailbag: Why do fans think they know more about offense than coaches?”

Sure, I could post his answer, but what would be the fun of that?

Why don’t y’all take a crack at that in the comments?  And when you think of that loudmouth sitting two rows behind you in Sanford Stadium, be gentle.  Or not…

At least he’s still got a sense of humor.

Gotta give Saban credit here.  This is pretty good.

The little smile at the end there is chef’s kiss worthy.

Clocking it

At least early on, the new clock rules are having the desired effect.

My first reaction is it hardly seems worth the trouble, but then again, I’m not a broadcast partner trying to stuff a game within a time window.

As for saving wear and tear on players, I wonder how a team like Georgia, with a deep, young roster, feels about losing 3 or 4 snaps per game that could be used to get their third stringers more reps.

“I love Ole Miss, but they do not love me.”

Well, lookee here.  Junior done got his ass sued.

Ole Miss defensive tackle DeSanto Rollins, who said he was recently kicked off the team for missing practices and meetings during a “mental health crisis,” is suing the university and coach Lane Kiffin for failure to provide equal protection, racial and sexual discrimination, and multiple other allegations, according to the lawsuit filed Thursday.

Rollins, a backup lineman whose career has been marred by injuries, is demanding $10 million in compensatory damages and $30 million in punitive damages. The lawsuit alleges that Kiffin intentionally took adverse action against Rollins “on account of race for requesting and taking a mental health break, but not taking adverse action against white student-athletes” for the same request. It alleges sexual discrimination on the basis that Ole Miss has not taken “adverse action against female student-athletes for requesting and taking a mental health break.”

Talk about throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks.

Ole Miss claims that Rollins hasn’t been kicked off the team and remains on scholarship, but, unbeknownst to the Laner, Rollins taped their last meeting together and the lyrics there were a little different:

“Ok, you have a f—ing head coach, this is a job, guess what, if I have mental issues and I’m not diminishing them, I can’t not see my f—ing boss,” Kiffin said, according to the lawsuit and the audio recording. “When you were told again and again the head coach needs to see you, wasn’t to make you practice, wasn’t to play a position you don’t f—ing want to, ok? It was to talk to you and explain to you in the real world, ok? So I don’t give a f— what your mom say, ok, or what you think in the real f—ing world, you show up to work, and then you say, ‘Hey, I have mental issues, I can’t do anything for two weeks, but if you change my position I won’t have mental issues.’

“I guarantee if we f—ing called you in and said you’re playing defense, would you have mental issues?”

“I definitely would,” Rollins said.

During the audio exchange, Rollins is heard saying, “I mean, you’re acting like my issues aren’t real.”

“I didn’t say they’re not real,” Kiffin responded. “You show up when your head — when your boss wants to meet with you. It wouldn’t have been like this. If you would’ve come here when you kept getting messages the head coach wants to talk to you, you say ‘I’m not ready to talk to him.'”

“I wasn’t,” Rollins said.

“What f—ing world do you live in?” Kiffin asked.

“I don’t see why you have to be disrespectful, honestly,” Rollins said.

“Get out of here,” Kiffin said. “Go, you’re off the team. You’re done. See ya. Go. And guess what? We can kick you off the team. So go read your f—ing rights about mental health. We can kick you off the team for not showing up. When the head coach asks to meet with you and you don’t show up for weeks, we can remove you from the team.

Discovery ought to be a real hoot, assuming things actually go that far.  I’m more curious if Kiffin can restrain himself from making any smart ass public statements alluding to it in the meantime.

A little help would be nice.

That’s what Carson Beck might be thinking about his receiving corps.

If I recall, last year’s drop rate was under 6%.

Hopefully, this is something that will be sorted out with more time and reps.
