Your game day post, season opener edition

Well, it’s finally here.  Congratulations, you’ve made it through the offseason!  And today, your reward for that is simple.  Forget about Alan Judd and the talk about three-peats (although my bet is the broadcast team won’t let you off that easy).  You’ve got a real football game to obsess over!

I am still marshalling my strength after a rough year, healthwise, so my plans are to watch the game from the cozy confines of Section HD.  But whether you’ve headed to Athens (what, you haven’t left already?) or watching the broadcast like me, you’ve got three+ hours of Georgia football ahead of you.

Sure, it’s an FCS opponent.  But that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty to watch.  How does Beck look, running the offense for the first time when it counts?  How does the running back position sort out with the injury situation?  Does Dominic Lovett take charge the way I’m hoping he does?  And on defense, who starts at the second cornerback spot?  Does Mykel Williams take the next step?  Does Tykee Smith, after two seasons of waiting, finally get to flash all the promise he brought with him?

The line is now up to -51.5.  Kirby’s gonna have to work hard not to cover that.  I have a strong suspicion that Beck won’t play much, if at all, in the second half, but they’re going to want to give Brock and Gunner meaningful snaps today, so the offense will still be moving the ball in the latter two quarters.

That said, things are going to be as vanilla as vanilla gets.  There’s no reason to show South Carolina anything meaningful today.  Although I would absolutely love it if Mike Bobo trolled the world by having the offense come out in the I-formation.

Oh, and no injuries, fellas, okay?

Add your game day insights in the comments.  And GO DAWGS!!!

Your (ND) game day post

Behold, the first real schedule of 2023:

Separating the wheat from the chaff — and, yeah, there’s a fair amount of chaff there — here’s what I’ll be watching today:

  • Virginia at Tennessee.  The ‘Hoos aren’t good and the Vols want to show off.  Still, let’s see what the Urnge Juggernaut looks like.
  • Colorado at TCU.  Easily the most overhyped game of the day, but they’ll be humping Coach Prime for a while, so we’d best get used to it.
  • Ohio State at Indiana.  Do the Buckeyes miss a beat after Stroud?
  • Rice at Texas.  JT Daniels’ last hurrah starts today.
  • Middle Tennessee at Alabama.  How many quarterbacks does Saban play today?
  • North Carolina vs. South Carolina.  Which Spencer Rattler shows up?  And will it matter?

What’s on your list?

The next evolutionary step

How exciting.

Because nothing screams conference play like playing a midweek volleyball game at night hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away from both campuses.

Then again, who cares, amirite?  It’s a non-revenue sport, sport.  It’s not like there are any fans, he noted sarcastically.

At the risk of repeating myself, these people are flaming assholes.

The agent behind the throne

The next time you hear somebody laud Greg McGarity for the sage, thoughtful decision making that went into the hire of Kirby Smart, play them this.

When they erect the Kirby Smart statue one day, they’ll need to put one of Jimmy Sexton next to it.

Lack of focus

This is obviously amusing on one level…

… but why is a Florida player posting crap like that just before a game in the first place?

Looks like Billy’s facing another gap — in culture building.

Living the dream

Shorter Mark Bradley:  I pine for those heady days when Paul Johnson made Georgia Tech football a success.
