Logically speaking, if you were the head coach of an FCS team coming in to Athens to face the Dawgs in their home opener, with Georgia sporting a new quarterback, new/old offensive coordinator and Kirby Smart’s mindset, how would you play defense?
So would UT-Martin’s head coach.
Defensively, however, Simpson knew his team had to pick its poison, so it logically loaded up against the run to force first-time starter Carson Beck to put the ball in the air.
It’s no secret Georgia coach Kirby Smart is big on establishing the run game, regardless of who is offensive coordinator is, so the Bulldogs’ stubbornly hammered away at the Skyhawks.
Smart knew, just like Simpson, that eventually UT-Martin’s front would soften and the Bulldogs could then find balance.
Still, loading up to stop the run and hoping to force turnovers was the only shot the Skyhawks had for an upset, as Simpson explained.
“It’s a lot easier to hand it off the back and rip off a run 50 yards (then throw),” Simpson said, asked about stacking the box.
“At least they got to block it and throw it and catch it.”
“They are two-dimensional, obviously, we were loading up to stop the run and they throw for 400 against us,” Simpson said.
“So, a good thing (to hold Georgia to) 30 rushes for 159 yards. (But) 26-40 (passing) for 400 yards, that’s where the game got away from us.”
At least you had Georgia fans grumbling for a while. Take your wins where you can get them.
