Shane Beamer’s key to the game

You know, if I just watched my offensive line give up nine sacks and sixteen (!) tackles for loss, I’d probably have to assign some blame in that direction to explain the game’s outcome.

But I’m not the South Carolina head coach.

It would be pretty damned funny if in a couple of weeks the Sanford Stadium crowd were to greet him waving hot dogs.

Undercutting the message

Gawd damn it.

Another member of the Georgia football team was jailed for driving recklessly and this time it was a member of the coaching staff.

Jarvis Jones was arrested Friday night by Athens-Clarke County police for reckless driving and speeding/maximum limits. He was booked at Athens-Clarke County Jail at 11:26 p.m. and released an hour later on a $2,400 bond. Maximum limits typically means more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit. A police report was not immediately available.

It’s gotten to the point I can’t even joke about Mudcat’s car anymore.  Whatever Smart’s doing about the problem doesn’t seem to be taking.

It occurs to me if you don’t want the media covering this crap, the best way to stop that would be to quit driving recklessly, but what do I know?

So obvious, even a cave man would call it.

Logically speaking, if you were the head coach of an FCS team coming in to Athens to face the Dawgs in their home opener, with Georgia sporting a new quarterback, new/old offensive coordinator and Kirby Smart’s mindset, how would you play defense?

So would UT-Martin’s head coach.

Defensively, however, Simpson knew his team had to pick its poison, so it logically loaded up against the run to force first-time starter Carson Beck to put the ball in the air.

It’s no secret Georgia coach Kirby Smart is big on establishing the run game, regardless of who is offensive coordinator is, so the Bulldogs’ stubbornly hammered away at the Skyhawks.

Smart knew, just like Simpson, that eventually UT-Martin’s front would soften and the Bulldogs could then find balance.

Still, loading up to stop the run and hoping to force turnovers was the only shot the Skyhawks had for an upset, as Simpson explained.

“It’s a lot easier to hand it off the back and rip off a run 50 yards (then throw),” Simpson said, asked about stacking the box.

“At least they got to block it and throw it and catch it.”

“They are two-dimensional, obviously, we were loading up to stop the run and they throw for 400 against us,” Simpson said.

“So, a good thing (to hold Georgia to) 30 rushes for 159 yards. (But) 26-40 (passing) for 400 yards, that’s where the game got away from us.”

At least you had Georgia fans grumbling for a while.  Take your wins where you can get them.

Everybody’s a portal master now.

I don’t know about you, but one thing that surprised me as I watched last night’s broadcast of the FSU-LSU game was the sheer number of starters on both teams who have transferred in from other programs.  There was a stretch there when it seemed like every player mentioned came from somewhere else.

I guess that’s my way of telling you I’m spoiled by Georgia’s recruiting prowess without saying I’m spoiled by Georgia’s recruiting prowess.

Had it in the bag.

Of all the things uttered this weekend, this one’s near the top of my surprise list.

“I feel like we made the mistake of thinking we had the game at half. So once that outcome changed, we were really disappointed. That’s really the biggest thing,” Tech safety Jaylon King said. “And our biggest takeaway from that is going into the games now we get to a hot start. The game isn’t over until it hits all zeros at the end of the fourth quarter.

“Can’t be satisfied at halftime what the score is. Just gotta stick to the plan, execute.”

Georgia Tech, complacent?  Georgia Tech?  Dude, have you not been watching your own tape over the last four seasons?

Unleash the hot takes!

Golly, gee, Week 1 ain’t even over yet and we’re already getting this:

Sure, man.

For what it’s worth, the LSU team I watched last night isn’t beating two top five teams this season.  But it’s nice to dream…

Complacency has a new measuring stick.

Unhappy with some aspects of Georgia’s play Saturday night?  Shoot, you don’t know the meaning of unhappy.

Brian Kelly does.

Even Kirby Smart doesn’t want his team thinking they’re the two-time defending national champs.  That’s unhappy.
