The worst was that a lot of those completions came in places we knew they were throwing. Catching us off guard when we think they are running the option is one thing. In third and long totally another. Zero improvement by our secondary this season.

I have no particular interest in saying anything that would seem to defend Grantham, but if Erk is the gold standard of Georgia defense, his troops gave up a helluva lot of yards, but won a helluva lot of games.
I just know we knocked the damn ball down…mistake made and learned from…the only stat that interests me is W’s and L’s. Erk said that.

‘Twas a different day, Merk. Offenses weren’t as prolific and sophisticated as they are now. All defenses struggle now. The rules are different…you can hold and you can’t be hit hard or too near the sideline..you can hold the ball over the pylon without ever getting one inch of your bod into the endzone (yet if you hold the ball out over the out of bounds line…it’s not out of bounds because your body is in bounds…crazy).
Erk’s strength was mostly (imHo) as an inspirational leader. He had the players ready to run through brick walls, etc…he was a great coach either way.

Erk was pretty adept at the strategy and tactics, too. What you say about the offenses then and now is very true….here’s a scarey thought, what if Erk’s defense today would look like…Grantham’s? Could be…can we get a Tech guy to game that for us…Mizzou vs. Erk’s defense?

The drop off from Tray Matthews to Quincy Mauger is significant. And Shaq Wiggins is our best cover corner. We weren’t just missing 2 DBs, we were missing our 2 best DBs. When we’re already really inconsistent (and often just bad) in the secondary, losing our 2 best players back there really hurt.

But what precipitous lack of depth, though. Any D1 DBs should be able to do better than Mauger and Dawson, especially, did yesterday. Dawson couldn’t cut it on a top-level HS team.

Fire Lakatos (idc how to spell his damn name) and get the DB coach from UF or another school that plays press coverage. Hell UF has a damn freshman playing corner and doing just fine. Our guys suck and always play 10 yds deep, gets on my nerves. At the College level disrupting the receiver messes up a lot b/c most of the QBs and WRs are not that great to get disprupted every play and still have good success.

Dawson did get burned twice when jammed the receiver would have meant an incompletion, or at least a contested pass.

Yep. While normally I don’t think we could get someone on a lateral move, Robinson is one possibly FU’s best recruiter too, and if he thinks Muschamp is done sometime next year, we might be able to get him.

I think with a secondary that can play press/man a lot more often CTG might look a lot better. Provided he promises to never rush two/three on and 3rd or 4th and long anymore ever.

To be fair it appeared to me they picked on Dawson the whole game. The few times they threw Swann’s way he was actually in position, from what I saw. Dawson is soooo bad. You expect to play single man coverage against GT; you pretty much have to. The fact that we can’t cover their slow receivers against a lob it up there QB was simply frightening.

Yeah, as much as it pains me to say, I think the *least* surprising thing to come out of that game was the fact that we gave another mediocre QB a career day. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but … “If we just had an OL that could block more consistently, and a defensive secondary without so many holes, we’d be damn good.”
On a lighter note, StingTalk should be required reading for all Georgia fans this morning. “Our academic standards are too high to recruit any talent!” If only they’d lower their academic standards to something more on the level of Stanford …

Listen, as soon as you make that comparison and point out that there are plenty of schools that have higher standards and do quite well, they will start whining about their lack of soft majors, i.e., that all those other schools are liberal-arts universities and have “soft” majors that don’t exist at Blech. In other words, their whole frigging way of life is the problem. DUH.

Their real problems are 1. They’re a male dominant nerdy engineering school. 2. Campus is in a rotting slum. 3. It’s a short trip to see a real college campus in Athens, Chapel Hill, etc. 4. CPJ’s offense. 5. Being in the ACC instead of the SEC 5. 2% of student body is Ameircan and cares about football. 6. You can see a lot of pretty girls, but only their heads because they are zooming by in cars on the connector…which, btw, adds to the noisy, urban ambiance of the scene..One good thing..when the wind is out of the East (one day a month or so) you can smell the Varsity. That’s a huge one in recruiting.

Remember last recruiting season when some of these incoming DBs were wavering on their commitments because they wanted immediate playing time? Well, they got their playing time and so far they look not ready for playing time. I’m counting on these boys to become men by next year.

I really wish I could believe that time and experience would solve the problem, but watching Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree, and others make tackles on Sundays and remembering how mediocre we were with that talent in 2012 does not warm my heart.

Dodd coached them from 45-66, I counted 7 home wins in Atlanta during that stretch. I never was good at math though which is why I went to law school, I rechecked this morning and I still am getting 7 though so unless he missed one due to illness or something it’s a tie.

On a positive note, it appeared as though our LB’s played well enough that Johnson almost completely abandoned the triple option. He had to resort to using toss sweeps and passes to try to stretch our edges. We blew up that outside option all game.

Grantham understands how to stop the Triple Option. What he does not understand is how to get a competent DB coach who can get players to cover for crap. I assume Grantham does not know much about DBs as a DL/LB guy, so you really need a solid DB coach, which we do not have.

Meh. I couldn’t go or even watch it live, but I was keeping tabs on the score and wondered what the hell was going on. When I watched the game later, it seemed to me it was great play against the run, followed by another great play, and the Vad completes a pass for 30 yards he probably never makes in practice against air. We were lights out on the option, though: even Floyd mainly stuck with his assignments, and we were right there when the pitch was made. One play Vad was rolling left and had some green in front of him, so the pass defender shifted to defend the run and got burned.
What I saw was a defense playing to stop the run. Vad had a better game passing than he will ever have for the first half of the game. In the second half, he regressed to the mean, and the INT he threw to JHC in the fourth quarter was the guy we were expecting to see.
Just win, baby; keep the streak alive. May we never have seniors who know defeat against Tech. In fact, even though I like a proper beat down most of the time it is a little sweeter to have them thinking “we’re gonna win!” and then rip their still beating hearts right out of their chest in OT. 😉

We’ll spend the next 9 months trying to convince ourselves that the defense us going to be vastly improved for next season. The coaches and players will all swear it. We’ll find some stats that might indicate it. Mostly though we’ll just really want it to be true, and in the off-season anything is possible.
Hopefully in the warm glow of fall practice reports that indicate so and so is unblockable or has 10 interceptions we’ll remember items like this post and temper things.

I thought we brought in a JUCO DB who never even saw the field. Though if he is as good as “The Hitman” was, it was a wasted scholly. Pretty sure the guy had more facemask penalties than tackles.

Shaq Fluker (JUCO safety) redshirted because he could practice for so long due to an unspecified illness.
Kennar Johnson (JUCO corner) redshirted too.
Reggie Wilkerson (early enrollee freshman corner) won the starting CB job opposite Swann and looked really promising at GDay. Then he tore his ACL. So we get him back next year too. If Tray Matthews could stay healthy, that would help a lot too. He’s actually a pretty good FS.
We also have a good chance to sign Wesley Green (a very good, 4 star corner). So next year will probably look better in the secondary either way.

CTG I’m guessing saved his job last night. Granted, we made Vad look like Baylor. We did stop the option outside although we had problems with the dive and the called QB keep. Also, didn’t do well with the speed toss sweep. Looks like they blocked it similar to the AU speed sweep. There were some solid 2nd half adjustments (notice that is a strength of CTG). I don’t see major changes to the D staff unless CTG gets a head job or NFL DC job. There were times this year we appeared to tackle better than last year. Maybe CGT is just a slow learner. All in all, CTG is 3-0 vs Tech. Give him that…

yeap, in the NFL you can afford to get your a** kicked in 1-2 games a year and still win it all. In college 1 loss pretty much ends it and 2 leaves you on the outside looking in.

Tech’s success was mostly in the first quarter and a half…that’s when they got the big lead…some of the blame for the defense’s woes has to be pinned on the O. They couldn’t stay on the field long enough for the D to get their adjustments straightened out.
Both platoons effect the other. When the O got rolling, so did the D.
UGA has been beat up and robbed. Next year will be much, much, much better and we’re already starting to see some of it. Be happy, damn it.

The D has been a liability for 3 of CTG’s 4 seasons. Anyone expecting change is setting themselves up for disappointment. The guy has some talent or he never would’ve gotten the pay or opportunities he’s had. But his D is not dependable. The D breakdowns are far more common than stops or turnovers.

NOt only missing 2 DB, but Garrison Smith did not play second half and missed several snaps in 1st half.. Russell used a wide tackle six D. nobody uses that scheme. Most of Lee’s passing stats came in 1st quarter. After GT scored 20 points and after 1st quarter that could not muster points.

Ok I am not now nor have I ever been a coach but it seems to me that when you are playing teams that run you have to play zone. If you play man to man and the QB or RB break it your DB’s won’t be in a position to come up quick in support. A soft zone will make most QB’s look like Peyton. We were stopping the run first. The DC makes the scheme the position coach just coaches. Laktos (sp) is light years better than Willie. This year has just been a case of trying to make chicken salad out of you know what. See what happens next year when the walking wounded come back.
