The Georgia Way is under attack!, part one

For some reason, I have this picture in my mind of Greg McGarity getting up this morning, pouring himself a nice cup of coffee, picking up the morning paper/cutting on the laptop, perusing the sports page… and doing a massive spit take upon reading this.

Texas A&M’s Kevin Sumlin will become college football’s third $5 million-a-year coach under a six-year contract extension that was approved by the university’s board of regents and executed Thursday, according to a release from the school’s athletics department.

Six years, thirty million bucks for a guy coming off an 8-4 regular season who hasn’t coached in a conference title game.  Makes you wonder what a coach with slightly better credentials might be worth on the open market, or what it might cost to hire somebody to replace said coach with slightly better credentials if said coach with slightly better credentials were to leave.

Maybe Dink NeSmith has some helpful suggestions for McGarity.  Ol’ Dink seems kinda quaint now, doesn’t he?

And I’m wondering… if you’re a head coach in Athens, is there a better way to achieve job security than do to a good job and not seek top dollar for your efforts?

Bingo. McGarity would take pride in a mediocre program as long as he saved money doing it.

  2. Maybe, CMR has decided he has enough money. Richt has also made it clear from day 1 that he wants to retire at the head football coach at UGA. That consistent statement has certainly kept people from making a run at him. If I were him, I would play that loyalty for facility upgrades and staff instead of money in his pocket. If the program stagnates, McGarity will have no one to blame but himself. Foley isn’t doing any of this stuff at UF either.

I wonder how much Coach Richt’s market value would go up if he added a national championship to his resume? Is McGarity interested in that kind of strain on the reserve?

I don’t think that was his reaction at all. I think he stood up, went to the closet, put his cardigan on, chuckled and thought to himself “slow and steady wins the race.”

Mark Richt wouldn’t garner near the attention on the open market as Kevin Sumlin if they were both available for hire. If Richt was open to leaving, Texas, USC, and the other big programs wouldn’t be chasing him down as they would with Sumlin. Hell, James Franklin would probably be hired before Richt.

LOL. This morning I got up, poured myself a nice cup of coffee, cut on the laptop, and almost did a massive spit when I read this. Funny. Nice to get a laugh in early.

Sumlin’s success can be attributed to one player – Johnny Football.
