“You always have your fair share of injuries, but this year seems a little bit abnormal.”

Mike Bobo, crayon and all, wins the 247Sports Offensive Coordinator of the Year Award for the 2013 season.  Aaron Murray puts the season in perspective:

“Our stats this year are just the same if not better than last season,” said senior quarterback Aaron Murray, lost for the season to an ACL tear in the first half of game No. 11. “Last year was unbelievable, and you look at the amount of injuries we’ve had this year, and we’ve still been to put up those types of numbers. I don’t think fans really realize the type of offense we had this year. It’s been pretty unbelievable the things we’ve been able to do really with only half the amount of guys we usually have.”

I think this best sums up the 2013 offense:

With Bobo having to check to see who was in the game and figure out plays that substitutes would be able to run, Georgia managed to beat Tennessee in overtime. It came after a game-tying drive in the final minutes where, other than Murray, the five players who touched the ball included three true freshmen, a former walk-on receiver and a senior receiver in Rantavious Wooten – who caught a touchdown yet hadn’t caught more than 15 passes in any season before this one.

Just like they drew it up in practice.  It’s amazing to hear people bitch about how close that game was, but Bobo’s right, “At the end of the day, it’s about winning and losing,” Bobo said. “You’ve got to score one more point than the other team.”

Yeah, b-b-b-b-b-but he didn’t run the ball this one time I thought he should’ve, and also the 2010 Miss. State game, and he doesn’t have killer instinct and doesn’t want to win and doesn’t press the “score touchdown” button enough!

  3. I guess the ability to stay within the lines with a crayon was the primary evaluation criteria for the award.

It really is amazing how many players touched the ball this year in crucial parts of our games- were any parts not crucial?

From giving the ball to true freshmen tailbacks to run out the SC game to throwing the ball to walk on receivers, it was one hell of a ride.

I gave credit to Murray for distributing the ball so well and not keying on one or two receivers, but clearly the scheme and preparedness had to be in place.

    Congratulations Bobo.

Mike Bobo is an excellent coordinator who deserves all the accolades he receives. It’s fascinating to me how determined a section of the fanbase is to not believe he’s the real deal. A UGA alum who’s spent his entire playing and coaching career at UGA, who’s risen to the top of his profession in the eyes of 3rd party observers, recruits extremely well and who isn’t holding the school up for a 7 figure salary… he should be a hero.
There’s a sociology post doc thesis just waiting to be written on how the “Bobo Sucks” meme simply refuses to die.

Mike Bobo has always been a talented Xs and Os guy. However, at the beginning of his tenure as OC he had a weakness in playcalling and also had a tendency to just flat-out make a bonehead call when the game was on the line. He has now really grown into the job. My concern is that now, having had all his OJT (and committing the attendant mistakes leading to losing games that goes with gaining experience) at UGA he will be offered a boatload of dough to jump ship to a rival team. McGarity needs to recognize what he has in Bobo and pay the man. Otherwise, later he may recognize what he had in Bobo when Bobo starts consistently beating the Dawgs as OC at another school.

Bobo needs a fat raise and we need to be proactive about it. His salary now is essentially a slap in the face. Can you imagine what would happen if he went to a rival school? Bobo vs. Grantham is a terrible, terrible matchup for Grantham.

Yes, my biggest fear is that Muschamp or his replacement does just that. Bobo at Florida, with that recruiting ground, plus his contacts in GA. And his ability to groom a real QB, something that has been missing in G-Ville since Spurrier left, is a frightening thought to me.

Yeah, but just think what those numbers would’ve been if CMR hadn’t run off Mett and the greatest RB in Georgia history….twice!

I rise today to gradulate Bobo for winning his first NCAA BCS 247Sports OC of the Year Trophy with his gusty playcalling. 1,2,5…Go Bobo!

People bitching about how closed the Tennessee game was are forgetting that same Tennessee team beat the old ball coach. Congratulations Coach Bobo!

It would be nice if UGA’s defensive coordinator managed to earn similar recognition. I think you all know what that would mean.

Yeaa, Bobo! Greg needs to make up and pay for past dings and affrontery to the best OC in the land, then give him a “stay-put” raise on top of that. The O Machine with the interchangeable cogs that he has given us sure is purty.

Congratulations to a proud Bobo family and to all his Dawgs. Would think that his players in the Pros will pile the praise on as well.

Bobo has been continually Dawggraded by a segment of the UGA fanbase. I think he is exceptional and I am surprised his name isn’t mentioned more for head coaching positions. But, that is good for us. As long he is calling the plays, we will keep scoring a lot of points. Which is half of the equation. Congratulations Coach Mike Bobo.

These people crack me up the most – isn’t part of strategy doing what your opponent doesn’t expect? If all you ever do is throw on 3rd and 10, it makes it a hell of a lot easier for your opponent to defend…

The problem is the opponent does expect it. Bobo is nice but he has lived off talent on the field. He doesn’t have the imagination in his play calling that validates your strategy theory.

That’s just silly – I’d like to know what percentage of third and ten plus you think we run draws on? And what do think a reasonable percentage would be to keep the opponent off balance (I presume you’d agree it’s greater than zero)?

Congratulations to Coach Bobo. Offense hasn’t been a problem in several years. It is a shame that all the offense has not equaled an SEC championship. Would you care to give DC a shot?
